The clinico-hematological profile and treatment outcome of patients with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) were assessed using a retrospective case record analysis. There were 79 (52 primary; 27 secondary) consecutive patients identified with a median age of 30.5 years.

Hydrogen peroxide in high yields can be generated with high efficiency at mild conditions (25 degrees C and atmospheric pressure) with the formation of only environment-friendly by-products (N2 and H2O) by a reduction of O2 by hydrazine from its hydrate/salt with its complete conversion in a short reaction period ( View Article and Find Full Text PDF

This study describes comprehensive polling of transcription start and termination sites and analysis of previously unidentified full-length complementary DNAs derived from the mouse genome. We identify the 5' and 3' boundaries of 181,047 transcripts with extensive variation in transcripts arising from alternative promoter usage, splicing, and polyadenylation. There are 16,247 new mouse protein-coding transcripts, including 5154 encoding previously unidentified proteins.

Effect of pyridoxine (Vitamin-B(6)) supplementation on calciuria and oxaluria levels of 20 normal healthy persons and 17 urinary stone patients has been studied. Mean 24 hr urinary calcium and oxalate levels of controls (healthy persons) and stone patients were estimated in presupplementation period and at every 20 days interval during supplementation. Stone patients were divided into two groups viz.

Complete combustion of dilute methane alone or a dilute mixture of methane and propane over transition-metal (viz. Mn, Co, Cr, Fe, and Ni)-doped ZrO2 (cubic) catalysts at different temperatures (523-873 K) and a space velocity of 51,000 cm3 x g(-1) x h(-1) has been investigated for controlling methane and propane emissions from exhaust gases. The catalysts are compared for their catalytic ignition temperature and activity in the combustion of propane and methane in the presence of each other.

Incorporation of bromide anions (1.0 wt%) in supported Pd catalysts (viz. Pd supported on Al2O3, ZrO2, SiO2, H-beta or Ga2O3) leads to a drastic increase in their selectivity for H2O2 formation in the direct oxidation of H2 to H2O2 by O2(at room temperature) in an aqueous acidic (0.

We present Dragon TF Association Miner (DTFAM), a system for text-mining of PubMed documents for potential functional association of transcription factors (TFs) with terms from Gene Ontology (GO) and with diseases. DTFAM has been trained and tested in the selection of relevant documents on a manually curated dataset containing >3000 PubMed abstracts relevant to transcription control. On our test data the system achieves sensitivity of 80% with specificity of 82%.

Background: Mutations in the HFE gene have been shown to be strongly associated with hereditary haemochromatosis, an autosomal recessive disease of iron overloading. The majority of patients with hereditary haemochromatosis possess a homozygous mutation C282Y that disrupts the binding of the HFE gene with beta2 microglobulin and prevents its surface expression. Another HFE mutation H63D is known to increase the relative risk of developing hereditary haemochromatosis.

Interpenetrating network hydrogels (IPNs) based on poly(acrylic acid) and gelatin (Ge) were evaluated for in vitro and in vivo biodegradation and in vivo release of gentamicin sulphate. In vitro and in vivo degradation studies demonstrated that with the increase of acrylic acid content in the polymer, the rate of degradation decreases, and a reverse phenomenon was observed with increasing Ge content in the hydrogel. The rate of in vivo degradation was much lower than in vitro degradation.

Hydrogels based on poly(acrylic acid) and gelatin crosslinked with N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide (0.5mol%) and glutaraldehyde (4%), respectively, forming an interpenetrating network were employed as matrices, for studying the loading and release of gentamicin sulphate. The release kinetics of gentamicin sulphate was evaluated in water (pH approximately 5.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with increased expression of amyloid precursor protein (APP) with a consequent deposition of amyloid beta peptide (Abeta) which forms characteristic senile plaques. We have noticed that the senescence accelerated mouse (SAMP8), a strain of mouse that exhibits age-dependent defects such as loss of memory and retention at an early age of 8-12 months, also produces increased amounts of APP and Abeta similar to those observed in Alzheimer's disease (AD). In order to investigate if this is due to mutations in APP similar to those observed in AD, and to develop molecular probes that regulate its expression, APP cDNA was cloned from the hippocampus of 8-month-old SAMP8 mouse.

Aplastic anaemia occurring during pregnancy is a rare event and is associated with high maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Prognosis is poorer when aplastic anaemia develops during pregnancy and many such patients have an unsuccessful pregnancy outcome. We report two cases of aplastic anaemia associated with pregnancy.

Oral enzymes act as a potent antiinflammatory, antiedematous agents thereby decreasing acute toxigenic effect of radiation and increasing compliance, quality of life of our patients. Fifty patients were randomized 25 allocated in enzyme and radiotherapy arm, 25 in radiotherapy alone. Pre RT and post RT biopsies were taken from both arms.

An experimental study was undertaken to observe effects of fluoride ingestion on lung tissue. The study was conducted on 15 albino rabbits of either sex and experimental fluorosis was induced by daily oral administration of sodium fluoride (NaF) solution. Rabbits were divided into three groups according to the quantity of fluoride ingestion: Group A: rabbits fed with 10 mg/kg/day NaF, Group B: 20 mg/kg/day NaF; and Group C: controls.

An attempt has been made to correlate the experimentally observed 29Si MAS NMR chemical shifts of monoclinic phase of highly siliceous ZSM-5 with their electronic properties. In order to incorporate the influence of next neighbor atoms on the 29Si chemical shielding of central SiO4, a pentameric cluster model (H12Si5O16) has been chosen. Each of the 24 crystallographically distinct Si sites, of ZSM-5 framework has been modelled by such cluster models.

Conversion of methane to higher hydrocarbons by its low-temperature activation without forming undesirable carbon oxides is of great scientific and practical importance. Methane can be highly activated, yielding high rates of conversion to higher hydrocarbons and aromatics (10 to 45 percent) at low temperatures (400° to 600°C), by its reaction over H-galloaluminosilicate ZSM-5 type (MFI) zeolite in the presence of alkenes or higher alkanes. The methane activation results from its hydrogen-transfer reaction with alkenes.
