The investigation of established pharmaceutical agents for recalibrating usage strongly supplements new drug development. In this work, we have prepared coassembled complexes of acetazolamide (AZM) with the cationic peptide octaarginine (R8) in an attempt to enhance its potency and scope of use. R8 and AZM in different weight ratios coassemble into remarkable nano- and microstructures such as ribbons, sheets, and stick-like structures.

Tunable Coassembly of Octaarginine with Thiazolyl Benzenesulfonamides Exerts Variable Antibacterial Activity.

The cationic peptide octaarginine (R8) is a prominent cell-penetrating peptide and has been extensively researched as a carrier of diverse cell-destined cargo. In this work, we describe the coassembly of R8 with small molecule thiazolyl benzenesulfonamide (TBS) derivatives. Physical complexation of R8 with three TBS derivatives across a range of weight ratios results in the formation of a distinctive set of nano- and microstructures.

Jurkat T Cells are Immunophenotypically Distinct from T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Cells Due to High-Level Surface Expression of CD5.

Human leukemic T cells show decreased surface CD5 (sCD5) and increased cytoplasmic CD5 (cCD5). When we examined their expressions in the Jurkat T cells, it showed increased sCD5 and decreased cCD5, which is in sharp contrast with the pattern of CD5 expression observed for human leukemic T cells. Furthermore, this opposite pattern was due to the absence of an exonal switch between E1A and E1B.

Using a combination of a mild stabilizer and a mild reductant, sodium citrate and hydrazine hydrate, anisotropic silver nanocrystals (NCs) were synthesized with tunable plasmon peaks at 550 nm, 700 nm, 800 nm, 900 nm and 1010 nm (the samples are named Ag-550, Ag-700, Ag-800, Ag-900 and Ag-1010, respectively). Optical Properties of Mg, Fe, Co-Doped Near-Stoichiometric LiTaO₃ Single Crystals.

Mg, Fe co-doped near-stoichiometric lithium tantalite (SLT) single crystals were grown by employing the zone-leveling Czochralski (ZLCz) technique. The optical properties, holographic parameters, as well as the composition of the grown crystals were measured. It was found that the Li/Ta ratio decreased with the doping of Mg and Fe ions.

Background: Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (apical ballooning syndrome) has been reported with increased frequency, most commonly in postmenopausal women. Despite the gender disparity, no clear link between estrogen and its possible cardioprotective effects has been shown.

Objectives: We present a case series of takotsubo cardiomyopathy in women and examine the prevalence of estrogen replacement therapy (ERT), in addition to conducting a systematic literature review on this topic.

First prospective study on brain stem death and attitudes toward organ donation in India.

Organ donation following brain stem death is infrequent in India. There is no prospective study on prevalence of brain stem death and causes of non-donation. Consecutive patients admitted to intensive care unit from Sep 2006 to Sep 2008 were studied prospectively.

Mini-lap cholecystectomy: a viable alternative to laparoscopic cholecystectomy for the Third World?

Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) requires expensive equipment and special training. Mini-lap cholecystectomy (MLC) has no start-up costs but no large series from a single centre has been reported as the procedure is considered hazardous because of inadequate exposure of the surgical field.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the outcome of 737 cholecystectomies performed through a 3-5-cm transverse subcostal incision and compared the results to published series of laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Pitfalls in the management of Mirizzi's syndrome.

Pressure on the common hepatic duct due to a gallstone impacted in Hartmann's pouch or cystic duct results in jaundice and cholangitis. Repeated episodes of inflammation and pressure necrosis lead to the formation of a cholecysto-choledochal fistula (Mirizzi's syndrome Type I & II). Preoperative diagnosis is difficult and a formal cholecystectomy may lead to bile duct injury.
