: Childhood and young adult cancer survivors exposed to chest radiotherapy are at increased risk of lung cancer. In other high-risk populations, lung cancer screening has been recommended. Data is lacking on prevalence of benign and malignant imaging abnormalities in this population.

Limited Utility of Toxicology Testing at Delivery for Perinatal Cannabis Use.

Objectives: To describe the characteristics of individuals undergoing toxicology testing at delivery for a sole indication of cannabis use and to evaluate the rate of unexpected positive toxicology testing results among this cohort.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included dyads with a maternal history of cannabis use who underwent peripartum toxicology testing between 2016 and 2020 at 5 birthing hospitals in Massachusetts. We collected information on maternal demographic characteristics and toxicology test results and reviewed records of dyads with unexpected positive results to identify additional social risk factors and clinical outcomes.

Toward Perfect Surfaces of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides with Ion Bombardment and Annealing Treatment.

Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are two-dimensional materials exhibiting a variety of unique features with great potential for electronic and optoelectronic applications. The performance of devices fabricated with mono or few-layer TMD materials, nevertheless, is significantly affected by surface defects in the TMD materials. Recent efforts have been focused on delicate control of growth conditions to reduce the defect density, whereas the preparation of a defect-free surface remains challenging.

Augmenting hematoma-scavenging capacity of innate immune cells by CDNF reduces brain injury and promotes functional recovery after intracerebral hemorrhage.

During intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), hematoma formation at the site of blood vessel damage results in local mechanical injury. Subsequently, erythrocytes lyse to release hemoglobin and heme, which act as neurotoxins and induce inflammation and secondary brain injury, resulting in severe neurological deficits. Accelerating hematoma resorption and mitigating hematoma-induced brain edema by modulating immune cells has potential as a novel therapeutic strategy for functional recovery after ICH.

Idiopathic Mesenteric Phlebosclerosis: A Single-Institute Experience in Taiwan.

Background: Idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis is a rare condition with unclear pathogenesis. This study aimed to investigate the clinical features, diagnostic modalities, treatments, and outcomes of idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis patients in Taiwan.

Methods: Idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis patients diagnosed by the typical characteristic of tree-like mesenteric venous calcifications on plain abdominal radiography or computed tomography between January 1992 and July 2021 were retrospectively analyzed.

Durvalumab and PET-Directed Chemoradiation in Locally Advanced Esophageal Adenocarcinoma: A Phase Ib/II Study.

Objective: To determine the safety and efficacy of adding the anti-PD-L1 antibody durvalumab to induction FOLFOX and preoperative chemotherapy in locally advanced esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Background: Neoadjuvant induction FOLFOX followed by positron emission tomography (PET) directed chemoradiation has demonstrated improved survival for esophageal adenocarcinoma. There is clear benefit now for the addition of immune checkpoint inhibitors both in early and advanced stage disease.

Disparities in Maternal-Infant Drug Testing, Social Work Assessment, and Custody at 5 Hospitals.

Objective: To evaluate for disparities in peripartum toxicology testing among maternal-infant dyads across a hospital network and subsequent child protective services (CPS) involvement.

Methods: Retrospective chart review of 59,425 deliveries at 5 hospitals in Massachusetts between 2016 and 2020. We evaluated associations between maternal characteristics, toxicology testing, and child welfare involvement with disproportionality risk ratios and hierarchical logistical regression.

Gender Disparity in Earliest Phase of Academic Surgical Training: An Area for Intervention.

Background: To overcome persistent gender disparities in academic surgery, it is critical to examine the earliest phase of surgical training. This national study sought to assess whether gender disparities also existed among surgical interns, as a proxy for medical school research experience in both quantity and quality.

Study Design: Using the 2021 to 2022 public information of 1,493 US-graduated categorical general surgery interns, a bibliometric evaluation was conducted to assess medical school research experience.

Traditional Neuroma Management Strategies: A Systematic Review.

Background: In this systematic review, the authors discuss traditional management strategies of neuromas. Surgical management can be described as either passive and ablative or active and reconstructive. Our aim was to evaluate the evidence supporting traditional management strategies in patients affected by neuromas.

Clinical Importance of Clonal Hematopoiesis in Metastatic Gastrointestinal Tract Cancers.

Importance: Clonal hematopoiesis (CH) has been associated with development of atherosclerosis and leukemia and worse survival among patients with cancer; however, the association with cancer therapy efficacy, in particular immune checkpoint blockade (ICB), and toxicity has not yet been established. Given the widespread use of ICB and the critical role hematopoietic stem cell-derived lymphocytes play in mediating antitumor responses, CH may be associated with therapeutic efficacy and hematologic toxicity.

Objective: To determine the association between CH and outcomes, hematologic toxicity, and therapeutic efficacy in patients with metastatic gastrointestinal tract cancers being treated with systemic therapy, both in the first-line metastatic treatment setting and in ICB.

Benefit of Outpatient Musculoskeletal Medicine Experience Early in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency.

Musculoskeletal care for persons with disabilities is an important competency in physical medicine and rehabilitation training. The optimal timing of musculoskeletal medicine rotations in the physical medicine and rehabilitation residency curriculum is unknown. The objective of this study is to determine whether outpatient experience in musculoskeletal medicine increases resident use of musculoskeletal examination skills in the inpatient setting.

A Model to Predict Treatment Failure in Patients Undergoing Upfront Surgery for Resectable Colorectal Liver Metastases.

Introduction: Patients who recur in the first year after resection of colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) do poorly. The aim of our study was to predict treatment failure in patients undergoing upfront resection with a nomogram.

Methods: Data from patients resected between 1991 and 2019 were randomly split (70:30) into two cohorts.

Genetic Predisposition to Neurological Complications in Patients with COVID-19.

Several studies have identified rare and common genetic variants associated with severe COVID-19, but no study has reported genetic determinants as predisposition factors for neurological complications. In this report, we identified rare/unique structural variants (SVs) implicated in neurological functions in two individuals with neurological manifestations of COVID-19. This report highlights the possible genetic link to the neurological symptoms with COVID-19 and calls for a collective effort to study these cohorts for a possible genetic linkage.

Theranostic Targeting of CUB Domain-Containing Protein 1 (CDCP1) in Multiple Subtypes of Bladder Cancer.

Purpose: Despite recent approvals for checkpoint inhibitors and antibody-drug conjugates targeting NECTIN4 or TROP2, metastatic bladder cancer remains incurable and new treatment strategies are urgently needed. CUB domain-containing protein 1 (CDCP1) is a cell surface protein and promising drug target for many cancers. This study aimed to determine whether CDCP1 is expressed in bladder cancer and whether CDCP1 can be targeted for treatment with radiolabeled antibodies.

Components of Existing National Surgical Site Infection Surveillance Programs Based on a Case Series of Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Building Blocks for Success and Opportunities for Improvement.

Surgical site infection (SSI) surveillance programs are recommended to be included in national infection prevention and control (IPC) programs, yet few exist in low- or middle-income countries (LMICs). Our goal was to identify components of surveillance in existing programs that could be replicated elsewhere and note opportunities for improvement to build awareness for other countries in the process of developing their own national surgical site infection surveillance (nSSIS) programs. Autoinhibitory structure of preligand association state implicates a new strategy to attain effective DR5 receptor activation.

Members of the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily (TNFRSF) are important therapeutic targets that can be activated to induce death of cancer cells or stimulate proliferation of immune cells. Although it has long been implicated that these receptors assemble preligand associated states that are required for dominant interference in human disease, such states have so far eluded structural characterization. Here, we find that the ectodomain of death receptor 5 (DR5-ECD), a representative member of TNFRSF, can specifically self-associate when anchored to lipid bilayer, and we report this self-association structure determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).

Mpox Cases Among Cisgender Women and Pregnant Persons - United States, May 11-November 7, 2022.

Monkeypox (mpox) cases in the 2022 outbreak have primarily occurred among adult gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM); however, other populations have also been affected (1). To date, data on mpox in cisgender women and pregnant persons have been limited. Understanding transmission in these populations is critical for mpox prevention.

Circulating Spike Protein Detected in Post-COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine Myocarditis.

Background: Cases of adolescents and young adults developing myocarditis after vaccination with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-targeted mRNA vaccines have been reported globally, but the underlying immunoprofiles of these individuals have not been described in detail.

Methods: From January 2021 through February 2022, we prospectively collected blood from 16 patients who were hospitalized at Massachusetts General for Children or Boston Children's Hospital for myocarditis, presenting with chest pain with elevated cardiac troponin T after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. We performed extensive antibody profiling, including tests for SARS-CoV-2-specific humoral responses and assessment for autoantibodies or antibodies against the human-relevant virome, SARS-CoV-2-specific T-cell analysis, and cytokine and SARS-CoV-2 antigen profiling.
