Neighborhood Income Disparities in Unplanned Hospital Admission and In-Hospital Outcomes Among Children with Congenital Heart Disease.

Unplanned admissions are associated with worse clinical outcomes and increased hospital resource utilization. We hypothesized that children with congenital heart disease (CHD) from lower-income neighborhoods have higher rates of unplanned hospital admissions and greater resource utilization. Utilizing the Kids' Inpatient Database (2016 and 2019), we included children under 21 years of age with CHD, excluding newborn hospitalizations.

Background: Weight control behaviors are commonly observed among adolescents and emerging adults. However, the high prevalence of overweight and obesity in both these age groups remains an imperative health concern. The development of a dyadic family life review intervention for the Asian diaspora: A practice article.

Intergenerational family conflict is a commonly identified issue in the Asian diaspora; however, there are limited interventions designed to address this concern. Given this gap in the literature, the authors present a practice article outlining the conceptualization, development, and delivery of a dyadic life review intervention called (Re)Cultivating Family Stories (RFS). RFS is a clinician-facilitated family intervention designed to promote connection and foster successive communication through the joint activity of developing a family story.

Formononetin alleviates thermal injury-induced skin fibroblast apoptosis and promotes cell proliferation and migration.

The aim of this study was to explore the effect and mechanism of formononetin (FMNT) in thermal-injured fibroblast proliferation, apoptosis, and oxidative stress. After thermal injury, human skin fibroblast (HSF) cells showed inhibited proliferation, migration, extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis; and increased apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and inflammation. Specifically, after thermal injury, cell viability, migration distance, and protein levels of collagen I, collagen III, α-SMA, MMP1, and MMP3 were reduced; cell apoptosis rate and TUNEL-positive cell numbers were increased; the levels of Bax and cleaved caspase-3 were elevated, while Bcl-2 level was reduced.

Discovery of a novel benzimidazole conjugated quinazolinone derivative as a promising SARS-CoV-2 3CL protease inhibitor.

This report presents the design and synthesis of quinazolinone-based derivatives as promising SARS-CoV-2 3CL protease inhibitors. Two novel series, namely, febrifugine analogues 4a-i and quinazolinone conjugated benzimidazoles 9a-c, were successfully synthesized starting from isatoic anhydride. The synthesized quinazolinone derivatives were evaluated for their cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines and SARS-CoV-2 3CL inhibitory activity.

Dehydroepiandrosterone-α-2-Deoxyglucoside Exhibits Enhanced Anticancer Effects in MCF-7 Breast Cancer Cells and Inhibits Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Activity.

In the pentose phosphate pathway, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) uncompetitively inhibits glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), reducing NADPH production and increasing oxidative stress, which can influence the onset and/or progression of several diseases, including cancer. 2-Deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG), a glucose mimetic, competes with glucose for cellular uptake, inhibiting glycolysis and competing with glucose-6-phosphate (G-6-P) for G6PD activity. In this study, we report that DHEA-α-2-DG (5), an α-covalent conjugate of DHEA and 2-DG, exhibits better anticancer activity than DHEA, 2-DG, DHEA +2-DG, and polydatin in MCF-7 cells, and reduces NADPH/NADP ratio in cellular assays.

Addressing the challenges of missed parathyroid glands in ultrasonography for secondary hyperparathyroidism: a retrospective observational study.

Purpose: Preoperative localization plays an important role in secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) surgery. The advantages of neck ultrasound (US) include high availability and low cost. However, the reported sensitivity of US is 54%-76%, and the reason for missed parathyroid glands (PGs) on US has been rarely addressed.

Characteristics of sleep disturbance across two waves of the COVID-19 pandemic among nursing staffs.

Objectives: COVID-19 has impacted human lifestyles, including sleep quality. For nursing staff, sleep disorders not only impact their health and daily lives but also have implications for patient safety. The objective of this study is to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the psychological and social aspects of nursing staff and the factors influencing their sleep quality through a two-wave survey.

Objective: Healthcare workers (HCWs) suffered from a heavy mental health burden during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We aimed to explore the differences in sleep disturbance in three waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan among HCWs. Moreover, factors associated with sleep disturbances in the third wave were investigated.

From Feeling Tough to Mental Growth: Coping with Sexual Bullying During Childhood in Gay and Bisexual Men.

This qualitative study was conducted to understand how gay and bisexual men (GBM) in Taiwan cope with childhood bullying because of their sexual orientation or gender nonconformity. We explored their journey from feeling disturbed to receiving social support, developing coping strategies, and achieving self-growth. Colaizzi's phenomenological approach was used to investigate subject experiences.

The clinical effectiveness of elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) for people with CF without a F508del variant: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Access to elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) for people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) without a F508del variant is limited due to lack of clinical data supporting efficacy.

Methods: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we examined patient-level data from studies reporting the clinical response to ETI for PwCF with non-F508del CFTR variants. We searched electronic data sources including Embase, MEDLINE, and CENTRAL from January 1st, 2019 to May 14th, 2024.

Effect of inhaled aromatherapy on sleep quality in critically ill patients: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.

Aim: This study aimed to compare the effect of inhaled aromatherapy using various essential oils on the sleep quality of critically ill patients.

Background: Inhalation of essential oils significantly promotes the physiological and psychological health of patients in intensive care units (ICUs). However, research identifying and ranking the effects of different essential oils on the sleep quality of critically ill patients is lacking.

While the purity of coconut water is esteemed for its health benefits, its popularity also exposes it to potential adulteration and misrepresentation. To address this concern, our study combines Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and machine learning techniques to detect potential adulterants in coconut water through classification models.

Translation and adaptation of Shared Care Instrument-Revised for the older adults and their caregivers in Taiwan.

Background: The aging population in Taiwan has resulted in an increase in the dependent population and the care load on caregivers. Shared care is an interpersonal process in which support is "traded" to "handle" chronic illnesses by home-care patients and family caregivers. The scale of shared care has received little attention in the Taiwanese cultural context.
