Background: Patients with low-flow, low-gradient (LFLG) aortic stenosis (AS) have precarious hemodynamics and are a fragile population for intervention. Quantification of aortic valve calcification (AVC) severity is a critical component of the evaluation for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR); this study aims to further clarify its utility for risk stratification in LFLG AS.

Methods: This retrospective study evaluated 467 patients with LFLG AS undergoing TAVR at a large quaternary-care hospital from January 2019 to December 2021.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is one of the causes of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) that is increasingly recognized in young to middle-aged women without typical coronary risk factors. This case report describes a 46-year-old male with a rare presentation of SCAD involving the left main (LM) coronary artery. The patient underwent an emergency coronary angiogram for high-risk ACS and had percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of LM due to active ischemia and hemodynamic instability.

l-asparaginase is a pharmaceutically and industrially important enzyme as it has potential to treat different cancers and inhibit acrylamide formation in fried and baked food products. In the present study, an attempt was made to screen for new and novel l-asparaginase producers using a widely applied phenol red and bromothymol blue (BTB) dye-based plate assay. Screening of four different soil samples for l-asparaginase producers resulted in the isolation of three new potential l-asparaginase producing bacteria.

Media composition and environmental conditions were optimized using statistical tools, Plackett Burman design and response surface methodology, to maximize the yield of a bacteriocin, named as sonorensin, from a new marine isolate Bacillus sonorensis MT93 showing broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity. Under optimized conditions, MT93 produced 15-fold higher yield of sonorensin compared to that under initial fermentation conditions. As oxygen supply is a critical parameter controlling growth and product formation in aerobic bioprocesses and used as a parameter for bioprocess scale up, the effects of oxygen transfer, in terms of volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient (kLa), on production of sonorensin was investigated using optimized medium composition in a bioreactor.

The role of protein tyrosine kinases (PTK) in modulating contractility has not been investigated in airway smooth muscle (ASM). We have examined the effects of the PTK inhibitors ST638, genistein, and tyrphostin A47 on contractions induced by carbachol, serotonin, ionomycin, and 75 mM KCl in isolated bronchioles of the rat with internal diameters of 614 +/- 16 microm (small, n = 143), and 1,433 +/- 39 microm (large, n = 57). ST638 caused a dose-dependent decrease in the maximum response to carbachol, and shifted the carbachol concentration-response curve to the right.

A case of Meckel's diverticulum causing intussusception in an 8-year-old boy is presented. The Meckel's diverticulum was detected by using a Tc-99m-labeled antigranulocyte monoclonal antibody MN3 (Leukoscan; Immunomedics, Morris Plains, NJ), which is under clinical evaluation for the detection of atypical appendicitis at the authors' institution. Pathologic evaluation confirmed Meckel's diverticulitis with ileal-ileal intussusception.
