Intensive livestock and poultry farming in China largely relied on the use of in-feed antibiotics until July 2020. The consequences of antibiotic overuse in animal feed include accumulation in animal products and the development of bacterial antibiotic resistance, both of which threaten food safety and human health. China has now completely banned the circulation of commercial feed containing growth-promoting drug additives (except Chinese herbal medicine).

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is widely contaminated in foods and feeds, which greatly threatens human and animal health. Due to its stable physicochemical properties, DON can be hardly eliminated by heating or ultraviolet radiation. In the present study, the biowaste eggshells were firstly modified into effective DON adsorbents, which are ATPS (triethoxysilane) + TEOS (aminopropyl triethoxysilane) modified 500 °C/700 °C-calcined eggshell powders under acetic/propionic acid-catalyzation (500-CSAE, 500-CSPE, 700-CSAE, 700-CSPE).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how dietary allicin affects gut barrier function, especially when exposed to harmful substances like mycotoxins and endotoxins, showing its potential as a protective nutrient.
  • - Researchers found that a lower dose of allicin (2 μg/mL) increased cell viability in IPEC-J2 cells, while higher doses (over 10 μg/mL) reduced cell growth and health.
  • - Allicin boosted the integrity of cell layers by increasing electrical resistance and decreasing permeability, and it also activated antioxidant pathways to prevent damage caused by bacterial endotoxins.
