Article Synopsis
  • Atherogenic dyslipidemia is a condition linked to type 2 diabetes that can cause serious heart problems.
  • Statins are usually the main medicine given to help lower cholesterol, but researchers want to see if combining them with other drugs like ezetimibe and fibrates can work better.
  • In a study with nearly 4,000 people, scientists will compare the effects of adding ezetimibe and fibrates to statins versus just increasing the dose of statins alone, looking for improvements over four years.

Backgruound: Recent diabetes management guidelines recommend that sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) or glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) with proven cardiovascular benefits should be prioritized for combination therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and established cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study was aimed at evaluating SGLT2i or GLP-1RA usage rates and various related factors in patients with T2DM and established CVD.

Methods: We enrolled adults with T2DM aged ≥30 years who were hospitalized due to established CVD from January 2019 to May 2020 at 13 secondary and tertiary hospitals in Korea in this retrospective observational study.

Growth hormone (GH) deficiency is caused by congenital or acquired causes and occurs in childhood or adulthood. GH replacement therapy brings benefits to body composition, exercise capacity, skeletal health, cardiovascular outcomes, and quality of life. Before initiating GH replacement, GH deficiency should be confirmed through proper stimulation tests, and in cases with proven genetic causes or structural lesions, repeated GH stimulation testing is not necessary.

Obesity is a serious and growing worldwide health challenge associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, some cancers, sleep apnea, asthma, and nonalcoholic fatty liver. The Korean Society for the Study of Obesity recommends that pharmacotherapy should be considered when intensive lifestyle modifications fail to achieve a weight reduction in obese patients with a body mass index ≥25 kg/m. Long-term medications for obesity have traditionally fallen into two major categories: centrally acting anorexiant medications and peripherally acting medications, such as orlistat.

Background: Randomized controlled trials demonstrated lowering risks of cardiovascular events with sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and high cardiovascular risk. We analyzed the effects of cardiovascular function on SGLT2 inhibitors compared with dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) inhibitors in T2DM with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) or heart failure (HF).

Methods: This is a retrospective, observational, single center study.

The inflammatory biomarkers that fully characterize the metabolically unhealthy (MU) state-which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD)-remain unclear. Recent studies suggest follistatin-like protein 1 (FSTL1) could be used as a biomarker for inflammation and CVD, however there is little information on FSTL1 levels in the MU state. We aimed to evaluate the associations between FSTL1, the presence of MU state and subclinical coronary atherosclerosis.
