Effect of ageing and body mass index on prostate-specific antigen levels among Chinese men in Singapore from a community-based study.

OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of ageing and body mass index (BMI) on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) among Chinese men from the results of the 2005 Prostate Awareness Week in Singapore. SUBJECTS AND METHODS In all, 2714 men participated in the programme, consisting of 2431 Chinese, 114 Malays, 117 Indians and 52 'others'. Of these, 2410 Chinese men who had a PSA level of <20 ng/mL and were aged >50 years but <80 years were included in the analysis.

Efficacy and tolerability of vardenafil in Asian men with erectile dysfunction.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of vardenafil, a phosphodiesterase type-5 (PDE-5) inhibitor, in men of Asian ethnicity with erectile dysfunction (ED).

Methods: In this prospective, double-blind, multinational study, Asian men were randomized to receive vardenafil (10 mg) or placebo (4:1 ratio) for 12 weeks. The primary efficacy variables were the International Index of Erectile Function erectile function domain (IIEF-EF), and Sexual Encounter Profile (SEP) questions related to penetration and intercourse completion.

Prostate-specific antigen levels among Chinese, Malays and Indians in Singapore from a community-based study.

The purpose of this study was to examine the distribution of prostate-specific antigen levels among Chinese, Malays and Indians in Singapore, taking the effect of age into consideration. The study was carried out as part of the Singapore Prostate Awareness Week from 23-26th February 2004. Men above 50 years old went to four government-restructured hospitals to participate in the study.

Review of clinical manifestations of biochemically-advanced prostate cancer cases.

Objective: To review the pattern of initial clinical manifestation of patients who present with biochemically-advanced prostate carcinoma.

Methods: A review of 39 prostate cancer patients with initial prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels of more than 400 ng/mL (study group) and 40 patients whose initial PSA levels were between 20 and 399 ng/mL (control group) was done.

Results: The epidemiological profile and median Gleason score were similar in both groups.

The effect of chronic bladder outlet obstruction on neuronal nitric oxide synthase expression in the intramural ganglia of the guinea pig bladder.

Purpose: We examined the effect of chronic partial outlet obstruction on expression of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) in the intramural ganglion cells of the guinea pig bladder.

Materials And Methods: Partial urethral ligation was done in young male guinea pigs. The animals were sacrificed 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 weeks after partial outlet obstruction and nNOS immunohistochemistry was done in the intramural neurons of the bladder.
