By using multiple satellite measurements, the changes of the aerosol optical depth (AOD) and nitrogen dioxide (NO) over South Korea were investigated from January to March 2020 to evaluate the COVID-19 effect on the regional air quality. The NO decrease in South Korea was found but not significant, which indicates the effects of spontaneous social distancing under the maintenance of ordinary life. The AODs in 2020 were normally high in January, but they became lower starting from February.

Circular RNAs (circRNA) are involved in a variety of human heart diseases, however, circRNA expression profiles and circRNA-miRNA-mRNA regulatory network in human atrial fibrillation (AF) especially with valvular heart diseases (VHD) remain poorly understood. A high-throughput RNA sequencing was used to investigate the differentially expressed circRNAs in left atrial appendage from VHD patients with or without persistent AF. The Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis were performed to predict the potential functions of the host genes of differentially expressed circRNA and their downstream targets.

COVID-19 has been one of the most serious infectious diseases since the end of 2019. However, the original source, as well as the treatment and prevention of causative agent of COVID-19 (namely SARS-CoV-2) are still unclear nearly a year after its publicly report. The microbiome approach, which has emerged in recent years focusing on human-related microbes, has become one of the promising avenues for source tracking, treatment, and prevention of a variety of infectious diseases including COVID-19.

At present, AIDS drugs are typical inhibitors that cannot achieve permanent effects. Therefore, the research of blocking HIV infection is essential. Especially for people in the high-risk environment, long-term prevention is important, because HIV can easily infect cells once the drug is interrupted.

We have developed structurally unique bifunctional chelators in the NETA, NE3TA, and DEPA series for potential radiopharmaceutical applications. As part of our continued research efforts to generate efficient bifunctional chelators for targeted radionuclide therapy and imaging of various diseases, we designed a scorpion-like chelator that is proposed to completely saturate the coordination spheres of Y(III) and Lu(III). We herein report the synthesis and evaluation of a new chelator (3p--NEPA) with 10 donor groups for complexation with β-emitting radionuclides Y(III), Y(III), and Lu(III).

This study introduces a music therapy project for young offenders through community collaboration and its efficacy through a mixed method. The project called Young & Great Music is carried out via collaboration among three parties, which are the educational institution, the district prosecutor's office, and corporate sponsor, forming a tripartite networking system. In this paper, we present an efficacy evaluation of the project's implementation with 178 adolescents involved with the juvenile justice system: 115 youth was on suspension of indictment and 63 youth was under supervised probation.

Background: The Bostwick autoderm technique uses the patient's own deepithelialized mastectomy flap for lower pole coverage of an implant, similar to the use of acellular dermal matrix. The skin is closed over the autoderm flap in a Wise pattern. Unlike acellular dermal matrix, autoderm is perfused tissue that offers immediate protection for the implant.

We report nonlinear optical characterization of cm-long polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) waveguides at telecom wavelengths. Laser post-processing of lithographically-patterned amorphous silicon deposited on silica-on-silicon substrates provides low-loss poly-Si waveguides with surface-tension-shaped boundaries. Achieving optical losses as low as 4 dB cm enabled us to demonstrate effects of self-phase modulation (SPM) and two-photon absorption (TPA).

With our recent success in developing a recombinant human arginase drug against broad-spectrum cancer cell lines, we have explored the potential of a recombinant arginase mutant (BCA-M) for human cervical cancer treatment. Our studies demonstrated that BCA-M significantly inhibited the growth of human cervical cancer cells in vitro regardless of argininosuccinate synthetase (ASS) and argininosuccinate lyase (ASL) expression. Drug susceptibilities correlate well with the expressions of major urea cycle genes and completeness of L-arginine regeneration pathways.

The current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a novel coronavirus genetically close to SARS-CoV. To investigate the effects of previous SARS-CoV infection on the ability to recognize and neutralize SARS-CoV-2, we analyzed 20 convalescent serum samples collected from individuals infected with SARS-CoV during the 2003 SARS outbreak. All patient sera reacted strongly with the S1 subunit and receptor binding domain (RBD) of SARS-CoV; cross-reacted with the S ectodomain, S1, RBD, and S2 proteins of SARS-CoV-2; and neutralized both SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 S protein-driven infections.

In this work, we quantify the neck's involvement in stabilizing the head during falls in older adults to avoid head impacts. We tracked kinematics of 12 real-world backward falls in long-term care captured on video, where head impact was avoided. We estimated dynamic spring-dashpot parameters of the neck and hip representing active muscle activity and passive tissue structures.

Purpose: The Primary Immune Deficiency Treatment Consortium (PIDTC) enrolled children with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) in a prospective natural history study of hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) outcomes over the last decade. Despite newborn screening (NBS) for SCID, infections occurred prior to HSCT. This study's objectives were to define the types and timing of infection prior to HSCT in patients diagnosed via NBS or by family history (FH) and to understand the breadth of strategies employed at PIDTC centers for infection prevention.

Article Synopsis
  • Caffeic acid (CA) has anti-inflammatory properties and its derivative, caffeoyl-prolyl-histidine amide (CA-PH), has been shown to alleviate symptoms of atopic dermatitis (AD) in mouse models.
  • CA-PH works by suppressing signs of AD, such as skin thickening and mast cell infiltration, mainly by inhibiting the nuclear translocation of NF-κB, a key player in inflammation.
  • The study suggests that CA-PH binds to and inhibits Fyn, a protein involved in inflammatory signaling, highlighting it as a potential therapeutic target for treating inflammatory skin diseases like AD without some side effects associated with traditional treatments like glucocorticoids.

FBN1 gene encodes for the connective tissue protein fibrillin-1 which can also regulate the profibrotic cytokine transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß1. Mutations in the FBN1 gene cause Marfan syndrome (MFS), a genetic condition with defective connective tissues. FBN1 haplotypes and single nucleotide polymorphisms have also been reported to be associated with systemic sclerosis (SSc), a connective tissue disease characterized by fibrosis of multiple organs.

Specific proteins and their aggregates form toxic amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brains of people suffering from neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. It is important to study these conformational changes to identify and differentiate these diseases at an early stage so that timely medication is provided to patients. Mid-infrared spectroscopy can be used to monitor these changes by studying the line-shapes and the relative absorbances of amide bands present in proteins.

Water and nutrient absorption from soil by crops mainly depend on the morphological traits and distribution of the crop roots. Dense planting with reduced nitrogen is a sustainable strategy for improving grain yield and nitrogen use efficiency. However, there is little information on the effects of dense planting with reduced nitrogen on direct-seeded inbred rice.
