Ti and Ti‒5wt% W alloy foams were produced by freeze-casting process and their mechanical behaviors were compared. The Ti‒5W alloy foam showed a typical acicular Widmanstätten α/β structure with most of the W dissolved in the β phase. An electron-probe microanalysis revealed that approximately 2wt% W was uniformly dissolved in the Ti matrix of Ti‒5W alloy foam with few partially dissolved W particles.

Background: Few reliable blood markers are available for detecting gastric cancer, mainly owing to the heterogeneity of the cancer.

Objective: To establish gastric cancer diagnostic markers, we evaluated the levels of plasma cadherin 17 (CDH17) and trefoil factor 3 (TFF3), which are secretory proteins and known markers for intestinal metaplasia (IM), in patients with gastric cancer.

Method: The protein expression level was analyzed in blood plasma samples from 111 gastric cancer patients and 44 healthy individuals, using a sandwich ELISA kit, followed by statistical analyses.

Objectives: A new multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was developed to detect methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (MRS) and to distinguish between gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. In this study, we validated the sensitivity and specificity of this assay with periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) and evaluated the utility of PCR for culture-negative PJI.

Although a causal relationship between Zika virus (ZIKV) and microcephaly has been established, it remains unclear why ZIKV, but not other pathogenic flaviviruses, causes congenital defects. Here we show that when viruses are produced in mammalian cells, ZIKV, but not the closely related dengue virus (DENV) or West Nile virus (WNV), can efficiently infect key placental barrier cells that directly contact the fetal bloodstream. We show that AXL, a receptor tyrosine kinase, is the primary ZIKV entry cofactor on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), and that ZIKV uses AXL with much greater efficiency than does DENV or WNV.

Methods: A total 2262 consecutive samples collected from patients aged 1-101 years with febrile UTIs, during the period January 2012 to December 2014, were analyzed in this multicentre, retrospective cohort study.

Background: Preliminary evidence indicates that the addition of low-dose total body irradiation (TBI) (2-4 Gy) to reduced intensity conditioning may reduce the rate of relapse in allogeneic stem cell transplants. In very high-risk patients receiving combination haploidentical single-unit cord blood transplants, we have added 4 Gy TBI to the widely used fludarabine, melphalan conditioning regimen, in hopes of reducing relapse and decreasing graft rejection.

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection in pregnant women has been established as a cause of microcephaly in newborns. Here we test the hypothesis that neurodevelopmental stages when the brain is undergoing rapid growth are particularly vulnerable to the effects of ZIKV infection. We injected ZIKV intracranially into wild type C57BL/6 mice at two different time points: early postnatal development, when the brain is growing at its maximal rate, and at weaning, when the brain has largely reached adult size.
