The Berry curvature dipole (BCD) serves as a one of the fundamental contributors to emergence of the nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE). Despite intense interest due to its potential for new technologies reaching beyond the quantum efficiency limit, the interplay between BCD and NLHE has been barely understood yet in the absence of a systematic study on the electronic band structure. Here, we report NLHE realized in NbIrTe that persists above room temperature coupled with a sign change in the Hall conductivity at 150 K.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study highlights that physical inactivity after cancer treatment can raise ischemic stroke risk in survivors, prompting an analysis of how changes in physical activity levels impact this risk.
  • - Data from over 269,000 cancer survivors showed that remaining active pre- and post-diagnosis is linked to a 15% decreased risk of ischemic stroke, while those who changed their activity levels (either becoming active or inactive) also saw reduced risks of 16% and 11%, respectively.
  • - The findings suggest exercising can lower stroke risk for cancer survivors, indicating that encouraging physical activity should be a key part of care during and after cancer treatment.

Muscle strength assessments are vital in rehabilitation, orthopedics, and sports medicine. However, current methods used in clinical settings, such as manual muscle testing and hand-held dynamometers, often lack reliability, and isokinetic dynamometers (IKD), while reliable, are not easily portable. The aim of this study was to design and validate a wearable dynamometry system with high accessibility, accuracy, and reliability, and to validate the device.

Clonal hematopoiesis (CH) is characterized by the acquisition of a somatic mutation in a hematopoietic stem cell that results in a clonal expansion. These driver mutations can be single nucleotide variants in cancer driver genes or larger structural rearrangements called mosaic chromosomal alterations (mCAs). The factors that influence the variations in mCA fitness and ultimately result in different clonal expansion rates are not well understood.

Controlling stress and deformation induced by thermo-mechanical stimulation in high-precision mechanical systems can be achieved by mechanical metamaterials (MM) exhibiting negative thermal expansion (NTE) and negative Poisson's ratio (NPR). However, the inverse design of MM exhibiting a wide range of arbitrary target NTEs and NPRs is a challenging task due to the low design flexibility of analytical methods and parametric studies based on numerical simulation. In this study, we propose Bézier curve-based programmable chiral mechanical metamaterials (BPCMs) and a deep autoencoder-based inverse design model (DAIM) for the inverse design of BPCMs.

Mosaic loss of Y (mLOY) is the most common somatic chromosomal alteration detected in human blood. The presence of mLOY is associated with altered blood cell counts and increased risk of Alzheimer's disease, solid tumors, and other age-related diseases. We sought to gain a better understanding of genetic drivers and associated phenotypes of mLOY through analyses of whole genome sequencing of a large set of genetically diverse males from the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program.

  • A study evaluated how changes in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) affect mid-term health outcomes in diabetic patients after an acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
  • Among 967 patients, those with a decrease in HbA1c >1% had better clinical outcomes compared to those with increases, showing lower rates of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), cardiac death, and rehospitalization.
  • However, the findings suggest that while a decrease in HbA1c is beneficial, it did not serve as an independent predictor of improved outcomes over 24 months, emphasizing the need for consistent diabetic control instead.

Korean wasabi occurs naturally on the young oceanic, volcanic Ulleung Island off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula. Although the Ulleung Island wasabi is reported as and has been suggested to be morphologically identical to cultivars in Korea, very little is known about its taxonomic identity and relationship with other cultivars. In this study, we sequenced the complete chloroplast DNA sequences of three naturally occurring Ulleung Island wasabi plants and six cultivars ('Daewang', 'Daruma', 'Micado', 'Orochi', 'Green Thumb', and 'Shogun') from continental Korea and determined the taxonomic identity of Korean wasabi on Ulleung Island.

Previously, we reported that epidermal growth factor-like module-containing mucin-like hormone receptor-like 1 (EMR1/ADGRE1) is abnormally expressed in colon cancer (CC) and is a risk factor for lymph node metastasis (LNM) and poor recurrence-free survival in patients with abundant tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs). However, the signaling pathways associated with EMR1 expression in CC progression remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to explore the role of EMR1 and its signaling interactions with macrophages in CC progression.
