Meningiomas constitute the most common extra-axial tumor of the central nervous system and can have a wide-ranging manifestation of imaging. There are several types of unusual depictions depicted with the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of meningiomas that have been established thus far. It is thus crucial for the reporting radiologist or neurosurgeon to have an in-depth knowledge of their variable manifestations in order to be able to differentiate these neoplasms from the numerous tumors that can mimic their appearance.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) exerts differential effects on various individuals. The majority of infected individuals experience mild-to-moderate disease and usually recover, without requiring hospitalization. It has been reported that those who have underlying chronic diseases are more susceptible to infection and may thus develop significantly more serious illness.

Article Synopsis
  • Cigarette smoking is a major preventable cause of various diseases, and quitting smoking can improve lung function, as measured by forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1).
  • A study with 114 smokers showed significant increases in FEV1 for those who quit smoking after one and three months, particularly in younger groups (under 60 years old).
  • Conversely, smokers who continued to smoke experienced a decrease in FEV1 over the same period, highlighting the benefits of smoking cessation support.

Pulmonary carcinoid tumors are rare, low-grade malignant tumors that constitute 1-2% of all lung tumors. The present study aimed to describe the simultaneous pathological findings in biopsy specimens of patients with surgically resected lung carcinoids and determine their association with survival rates. For this purpose, 108 patients with resected carcinoid lung tumors were followed-up for 96 months and analyzed for simultaneous pathological findings in biopsy specimens.

The novel coronavirus has negatively affected patients and healthcare systems globally. Individuals with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) experience a wide range of respiratory symptoms, from mild flu-like symptoms to severe and potentially fatal pneumonia. Some patients report gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain in addition to the respiratory symptoms or as a separate presentation.

Organizing pneumonia (OP) is a type of diffuse interstitial lung disease, which may be induced in the context of several clinical conditions, such as drug reactions, infections, autoimmune diseases and cancer. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated OP has been reported as a late-stage consequence of the infection or a histological form of COVID-19-associated pneumonia. Autopsies and postmortem lung biopsies have demonstrated that the majority of patients with COVID-19-associated pneumonia develop secondary OP, and COVID-19-associated pneumonia and OP have common radiological features.

Pulmonary embolism (PE), along with deep vein thrombosis, are collectively known as venous thromboembolism (VTE). Predisposing factors for PE include post-operative conditions, pregnancy, cancer and an advanced age; of note, a number of genetic mutations have been found to be associated with an increased risk of PE. The association between cancer and VTE is well-established, and cancer patients present a higher risk of a thrombotic event compared to the general population.

Lung carcinoid tumor is a type of neuroendocrine tumor, which is subdivided into typical carcinoid (TC) and atypical carcinoid (AT), based on the rate of mitosis and the presence of necrosis. Several prognostic factors for lung carcinoids have been reported in the literature, including the type, Ki67 index, stage, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. In the present study, 108 cases with resected carcinoid lung tumors were enrolled and the expression of CD56, thyroid transcription factor 1, synaptophysin, carcinoembryonic antigen, epithelial membrane antigen and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) in the resected tissue specimens was immunohistochemically analyzed.

Novel coronavirus infection presents with greater severity in individuals with comorbid chronic lung diseases. Bronchiectasis is an illness characterized by permanent enlargement of the airways, presenting with chronic cough and sputum production and vulnerability to lung infections. Bronchiectasis is not a common comorbid disease in patients with COVID-19 disease and bronchiectasis exacerbation rates were decreased during the pandemic.

Cancer immunotherapy aims to stimulate the immune system to fight against tumors, utilizing the presentation of molecules on the surface of the malignant cells that can be recognized by the antibodies of the immune system. Immune checkpoint inhibitors, a type of cancer immunotherapy, are broadly used in different types of cancer, improving patients' survival and quality of life. However, treatment with these agents causes immune-related toxicities affecting many organs.

Atypical fibroxanthoma is an infrequent, low-grade superficial cutaneous neoplasm, usually presenting as a nodule or plaque of red color. It is considered as a superficial variant of pleomorphic dermal sarcoma. Although atypical fibroxanthoma has similar histologic features to pleomorphic dermal sarcoma, it has less aggressive behavior.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses a specific RNA virus that enters human cells by attaching to a receptor associated with N-acetyl-9-O-acetylneuraminic acid, leading to respiratory infections that are usually mild but can become severe in vulnerable populations.
  • In Greece, respiratory infections are primarily caused by the HCoVs 229E and OC43 viruses, with viral infections traditionally representing less than 3% of cases.
  • A case of severe lung infection in an immunocompromised woman caused by a previously undetected virus in Greece is reported, highlighting the need to consider this virus in severe respiratory infection diagnoses.

Swyer-James-Macleod syndrome is an infrequent clinical condition characterized by unilateral hyperlucent lung as a complication following infectious bronchiolitis obliterans, typically diagnosed during childhood. However, in some patients, the diagnosis may be confirmed in adulthood. The syndrome can be misdiagnosed with other lung disorders such as asthma, pulmonary embolism, and pneumothorax, leading to inappropriate management and worse outcome.

Summary: Improved diagnostic methods and medical therapies are necessary for early detection and treatment and an improved prognosis. It is thus vital to both examine and evaluate the role of the various existing proteins as biomarkers in carcinogenesis and to assess the contribution of these proteins in anti-cancer activity, for consideration in therapeutic strategies.
