To assess the predictive value of uterine activity as a marker for subsequent preterm labor, 139 black, inner city women were monitored at least three times for 1 hour between 28-32 weeks' gestation using a portable tocodynamometer. All had singleton gestations and gave no previous history of preterm labor or delivery. They were monitored between 8 and 10 AM while sitting in the clinic waiting area.

A high-performance liquid chromatographic procedure is described for the analysis of tolazoline in serum and urine. This assay procedure is suitable for the analysis of micro-samples (50 or 100 microliters serum and 100 microliters urine). Samples are extracted in a single step and injected into a reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography system for detection at 210 nm.

This paper examines the dimensions of the access concept with particular attention to the extent to which more parsimonious indicators of access can be developed. This process is especially useful to health policy makers, planners and researchers in need of cost-effective social indicators of access to monitor the need for and impact of innovative health care programs. Three stages of data reduction are used in the analysis, resulting in a reduced set of key indicators of the concept.

In vitro cytogenetic studies of amosite, chrysotile, and crocidolite asbestos have shown that these fibers may induce chromosome abnormalities and an elevated sister chromatid exchange (SCE) rate in mammalian cells. Twenty-five asbestos insulators (6 with radiographic asbestosis) were compared to 14 controls frequency matched for age and were found to have a marginally increased SCE rate in circulating lymphocytes with increasing years of exposure (P= 0.057).

A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of topical 5% acyclovir (ACV) in polyethylene glycol (PEG) was carried out among 208 patients who had an episode of herpes simplex labialis. Patients who were treated with ACV had a greater decrease in median titers of virus in lesions between the first and second visits to the clinic than did patients who were treated with placebo (-1.5 log pfu [plaque-forming units] vs.

Of 51 patients with herpes simplex labialis, 50 had detectable interferon (IFN) in samples of lesion vesicle fluid. The median titer of vesicle fluid IFN was 8,200 U. and the range of values was 400 to 63,600 U.

Because of a reported association between residence in counties with nonferrous smelters and increased risk of lung cancer, we studied the relationship between distance of residence from nonferrous smelters and lung cancer. Patients with lung cancer and patients with other cancers not known to be associated with smelter effluent (breast, prostate, and colon) were compared. All patients lived within a 20-kilometer radius around one of 10 nonferrous smelters in five western states during 1970-1977.

This paper examines national survey data on access to medical care to explore methodological issues associated with conducting health care surveys of Spanish-heritage persons. These include problems of identifying and sampling such groups, achieving respondent cooperation, designing valid interview protocols, and controlling biases that may result from the cultural specificity of the concepts being studied. The findings suggest that more attention should be given to the following in designing health care surveys of Spanish-heritage individuals: cultural and economic heterogeneity of "Spanish-heritage" grouping, validity studies of health care utilization, and yea-saying tendencies related to health care attitude items.
