Objective: We assessed the role of Ank in the maintenance of postnatal articular cartilage using the ank/ank mouse (mice homozygous for progressive ankylosis).

Methods: We analyzed ank/ank mice and wild-type littermates (8, 12, and 18 weeks old). Sections from decalcified, paraffin-embedded joints were stained with hematoxylin and eosin.

Self-reported history of infections and the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma: an InterLymph pooled analysis.

We performed a pooled analysis of data on self-reported history of infections in relation to the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) from 17 case-control studies that included 12,585 cases and 15,416 controls aged 16-96 years at recruitment. Pooled odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were estimated in two-stage random-effect or joint fixed-effect models, adjusting for age, sex and study centre. Data from the 2 years before diagnosis (or date of interview for controls) were excluded.

Racial disparities in Hodgkin's lymphoma: a comprehensive population-based analysis.

Background: Racial disparity has been investigated in a number of cancers; however, there remains a comparative paucity of data in Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL).

Patients And Methods: We examined time-, age-, and gender-specific incidence, disease characteristics, and survival across and within races for adolescent/adult HL (age 10-79 years) diagnosed during 1992-2007 in the SEER 13 registries.

Results: A total of 15 662 HL cases were identified [11,211 non-Hispanic whites, 2067 Hispanics, 1662 blacks, and 722 Asian/Pacific Islanders (A/PI)].

Mitochondrial DNA related cardiomyopathies.

Cardiomyopathies are a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by impaired heart muscle function. Over the last few years, interest in mitochondrial cardiomyopathies has been galvanized by a number of significant molecular biology discoveries. There is overwhelming evidence that genetic factors play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of primary cardiomyopathies.

Fruit, vegetables, fibre and micronutrients and risk of US renal cell carcinoma.

The association between renal cell cancer (RCC) and intake of fruit, vegetables and nutrients was examined in a population-based case-control study of 323 cases and 1827 controls; dietary intake was obtained using a mailed questionnaire. Cancer risks were estimated by OR and 95 % CI, adjusting for age, sex, smoking, obesity, hypertension, proxy status, alcohol consumption and dietary fat intake and energy. Intake of vegetables was associated with a decreased risk of RCC (OR 0·5; 95 % CI 0·3, 0·7; P trend = 0·002), (top compared to the bottom quartile of intake).

The epidemiology and natural history of depressive disorders in Hong Kong's primary care.

Background: Depressive disorders are commonly managed in primary care and family physicians are ideally placed to serve as central providers to these patients. Around the world, the prevalence of depressive disorders in patients presenting to primary care is between 10-20%, of which around 50% remain undiagnosed. In Hong Kong, many barriers exist preventing the optimal treatment and management of patients with depressive disorders.

Fast plaque burden assessment of the femoral artery using 3D black-blood MRI and automated segmentation.

Purpose: Vessel wall imaging techniques have been introduced to assess the burden of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in terms of vessel wall thickness, area or volume. Recent advances in a 3D black-blood MRI sequence known as the 3D motion-sensitized driven equilibrium (MSDE) prepared rapid gradient echo sequence (3D MERGE) have allowed the acquisition of vessel wall images with up to 50 cm coverage, facilitating noninvasive and detailed assessment of PAD. This work introduces an algorithm that combines 2D slice-based segmentation and 3D user editing to allow for efficient plaque burden analysis of the femoral artery images acquired using 3D MERGE.

Aberrant axial mineralization precedes spinal ankylosis: a molecular imaging study in ank/ank mice.

Introduction: The diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis is made from a combination of clinical features and the presence of radiographic evidence that may be detected only after many years of inflammatory back pain. It is not uncommon to have a diagnosis confirmed 5 to 10 years after the initial onset of symptoms. Development of a more-sensitive molecular imaging technology to detect structural changes in the joints would lead to earlier diagnosis and quantitative tracking of ankylosis progression.

Dietary intake of fruit and vegetables and risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Objective: Few studies have evaluated the potential association between consumption of fruit and vegetables and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) by histologic subtype, and the results of these studies have been inconsistent.

Methods: A detailed history of dietary practices and food preferences was collected using a food frequency questionnaire from 348 cases and 470 controls in a population-based, case-control study conducted in Nebraska during 1999-2002. Risk for the highest versus lowest quartile or tertile of intake was estimated by odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CIs).

The efficacy of additive tolterodine extended release for 1-year in older men with storage symptoms and clinical benign proastatic hyperplasia.

Aim: To determine the efficacy of toterodine extended release (ER) treatment for 1 year in older men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and storage symptoms treated with alpha-blockers and/or 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors (5ARI).

Methods: Men aged over 70 years with BPH/bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) and clinical storage symptoms were randomly treated with or without tolterodine ER in combination with alpha-blockers and/or 5ARI for 12 months. Cysteine-cysteinyl chemokine receptor 4 (CCR4) is expressed by a variety of T-cell subsets and leukocytes. This study examined the participation of CCR4 in response to pulmonary infection with Mycobacterium bovis Bacille-Calmette-Guerin (BCG). Constitutive and induced CCR4 agonist expression was detected among large mononuclear cells.

Heterobimetallic Ru(II)-Eu(III) complex as chemodosimeter for selective biogenic amine odorants detection in fish sample.

Gaseous biogenic amines such as putrescine, spermidine, aniline, and trimethylamine are important biomolecules that play many crucial roles in metabolism and medical diagnostics. A chemodosimetric detection assay has been developed for those gaseous amines by Ru(II)-Eu(III) heterobimetallic complexes, K{[Ru(II)((t)Bubpy)(CN)(4)](2)Eu(III)(H(2)O)(4)} (where (t)Bubpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine). Synthesis, X-ray crystal characterization, and spectroscopic properties of this Ru(II)-Eu(III) heterobimetallic complex were reported.

Rituximab-associated hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation in lymphoproliferative diseases: meta-analysis and examination of FDA safety reports.

Background: Rituximab has been associated with hepatitis B virus reactivation (HBV-R). However, the characteristics and scope of this association remain largely undefined.

Methods: We completed a comprehensive literature search of all published rituximab-associated HBV-R cases and from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS) MedWatch database.

Cysteine-cysteinyl chemokine receptor 6 mediates invariant natural killer T cell airway recruitment and innate stage resistance during mycobacterial infection.

This study examined the contribution of cysteine-cysteinyl chemokine receptor 6 (CCR6) to the innate pulmonary antimycobacterial immune response. Using a mouse model of Mycobacterium bovis BCG airway infection, we detected maximal induction of the CCR6 agonist CCL20 in lungs at 1 week after infection. Infected CCR6 knockout (CCR6-/-) mice displayed an early impairment of bacterial clearance, but ultimately eliminated the attenuated organisms with the onset of adaptive immunity.

InterLymph hierarchical classification of lymphoid neoplasms for epidemiologic research based on the WHO classification (2008): update and future directions.

After publication of the updated World Health Organization (WHO) classification of tumors of hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues in 2008, the Pathology Working Group of the International Lymphoma Epidemiology Consortium (InterLymph) now presents an update of the hierarchical classification of lymphoid neoplasms for epidemiologic research based on the 2001 WHO classification, which we published in 2007. The updated hierarchical classification incorporates all of the major and provisional entities in the 2008 WHO classification, including newly defined entities based on age, site, certain infections, and molecular characteristics, as well as borderline categories, early and "in situ" lesions, disorders with limited capacity for clinical progression, lesions without current International Classification of Diseases for Oncology, 3rd Edition codes, and immunodeficiency-associated lymphoproliferative disorders. WHO subtypes are defined in hierarchical groupings, with newly defined groups for small B-cell lymphomas with plasmacytic differentiation and for primary cutaneous T-cell lymphomas.

Objectives: Allograft vascular tissue is important in the repair of complex structural lesions of the heart and great vessels, but induces a deleterious immune response that might shorten the effective lifespan of the tissue and sensitize the recipient. We hypothesized that decellularizing allograft vascular tissue reduces the host allogeneic immune response.

Methods: Allograft ovine pulmonary artery patches were decellularized, cryopreserved, and implanted into the descending thoracic aorta.

Renal urothelial carcinoma with extended venous thrombus.

Vascular invasion is not uncommon histologically in patients with urothelial carcinoma (UC) arising from the renal pelvis or ureter, while tumor thrombus affecting the main renal vein or the inferior vena cava (IVC) is rare. Herein, we report a unique case of renal pelvic UC with extended IVC thrombus manifested as progressive swelling in the lower limbs.

Serum cytokine receptors in ankylosing spondylitis: relationship to inflammatory markers and endoplasmic reticulum aminopeptidase polymorphisms.

Objective: Endoplasmic reticulum aminopeptidase (ERAP)1 is associated with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and is known to be involved in the clipping of the cytokine receptors interleukin 1 receptor II (IL-1RII), IL-6Ralpha, and tumor necrosis factor receptor I (TNFRI). We studied the relationship of these serum cytokine receptors and their corresponding cytokines to markers of inflammation and polymorphisms in ERAP1 and ERAP2 in patients with AS.

Methods: Sera from patients with AS were assayed for TNF-alpha, IL-1, IL-6, sTNFRI, sIL-1RII, and sIL-6Ralpha by ELISA.

Objective: To evaluate the factors that might affect birth emphasizing a successful singleton at term (BESST) outcomes in women undergoing in vitro fertilization.

Methods: A retrospective review of assisted reproduction cases from January 1, 2001, to July 31, 2005, at the Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan. Variables that were potentially associated with failure to achieve BESST were evaluated using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis.

Dilated cardiomyopathy: etio-morphologic investigation.

The heart is the first organ to form and to function during vertebrate embryogenesis and its correct functionality is a "conditio sine qua non" for life. If the heart's pumping power is compromised, chambers dilate and pulmonary and systemic circulations are altered. Dilated cardiomyopathy can appear along a wide spectrum of presentations, including no symptoms, subtle symptoms or heart failure, which occurs when the heart is unable to pump blood to the periphery and oxygenate the organs.

Three-dimensional carotid ultrasound segmentation variability dependence on signal difference and boundary orientation.

Quantitative measurements of the progression (or regression) of carotid plaque burden are important in monitoring patients and evaluating new treatment options. We previously developed a quantitative metric to analyze changes in carotid plaque morphology from 3-D ultrasound (US) on a point-by-point basis. This method requires multiple segmentations of the arterial wall and lumen boundaries to obtain the local standard deviation (SD) of vessel-wall-plus-plaque thickness (VWT) so that t-tests could be used to determine whether a change in VWT is statistically significant.
