Introduction: Cholesteatoma is a rare disease characterized by the accumulation of keratinized squamous epithelial cells in the middle ear or mastoid cavity. Vertigo and facial palsy, which are rare complications, may indicate erosion into the semicircular canals or the fallopian canal.

Patient Concerns: A 40-year-old woman presented to our clinic with progressive right-sided hearing loss over 5 years (primary concern).

In this work, we integrated a Raspberry Pi (RPi) board, an open-sourced hardware, with a spectrometer, a high voltage DC power source, and a plasma system to develop a multi-tasking monitoring system for metallic elements in solution. In this system, RPi precisely controls voltage pulses, synchronizes them with the spectrometer, and performs real-time analysis using data acquired in real-time. This integration enables continuous monitoring of multiple metallic elements in solutions of varying conductivities.

In this study, we explore the feasibility and performance of detecting scalp-recorded frequency-following responses (FFRs) with a specialized machine learning (ML) model. By leveraging the strengths of feature extraction of the source separation non-negative matrix factorization (SSNMF) algorithm and its adeptness in handling limited training data, we adapted the SSNMF algorithm into a specialized ML model with a hybrid architecture to enhance FFR detection amidst background noise. We recruited 40 adults with normal hearing and evoked their scalp recorded FFRs using the English vowel/i/with a rising pitch contour.

Otomastoiditis caused by mycobacterial infections is uncommon and recalcitrant. Its clinical presentations, sometimes similar to those of common chronic suppurative otitis media, make diagnosis difficult. This retrospective study analyzed the clinical features, treatment course, and therapeutic outcomes of patients with mycobacterial otomastoiditis.

Objective: The objective of this research is to compare primary and salvage intratympanic (IT) steroid treatments in terms of hearing outcomes in patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL).

Methods: The patients were randomized into two (primary and salvage) groups. Both groups received systemic steroid treatment for 2 weeks.

Source-Separation Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (SSNMF) is a mathematical algorithm recently developed to extract scalp-recorded frequency-following responses (FFRs) from noise. Despite its initial success, the effects of silent intervals on algorithm performance remain undetermined. Our purpose in this study was to determine the effects of silent intervals on the extraction of FFRs, which are electrophysiological responses that are commonly used to evaluate auditory processing and neuroplasticity in the human brain.

The characteristics, risk factors, microbial distributions and effective treatment regimens for Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) patients intractable to empirical therapy were analyzed. Adult CSOM patients of China Medical University Hospital from 2018 to 2020 were included. Subjects of refractory and non-refractory groups were investigated for characteristics of age, sex, nation, comorbidities, otomycosis, and associated complications.

Objectives: This study investigated the long-term surgical outcomes of functional cholesteatoma surgery with canal wall reconstruction using autologous bone grafts as the primary material in patients with acquired cholesteatoma.

Subjects And Methods: Medical charts were retrospectively reviewed for all patients admitted to one institution for surgical intervention between 2010 and 2018. We analyzed 66 patients (66 ears) who underwent functional tympanomastoidectomy involving the use of autologous bone grafts for canal wall defect reconstruction.

Article Synopsis
  • Skeletal dysplasia (SD) is a common inherited condition affecting newborns, often linked to specific gene mutations, and there's a need for better early prenatal diagnosis since traditional methods are less accurate.
  • Next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology was utilized to develop a highly efficient targeted sequencing panel to detect genetic defects related to SD early in pregnancy.
  • The new sequencing workflow achieved excellent performance metrics, showing 100% sensitivity and specificity in identifying mutations, making it a promising tool for early prenatal screening of SD.

Objectives: To compare the efficacy of pentoxifylline with that of conventional steroid therapy in diabetic patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) and to compare blood sugar levels during hospitalization.

Materials And Methods: Medical charts were retrospectively reviewed for all diabetic patients admitted to one institution for ISSNHL between 2000 and 2015. We analyzed 298 cases; 50 patients received pulse steroid treatment (steroid group) and 248 received intravenous administration of pentoxifylline only (pentoxifylline group).

This study investigated the development of subcortical pitch processing, as reflected by the scalp-recorded frequency-following response, during early infancy. Thirteen Chinese infants who were born and raised in Mandarin-speaking households were recruited to partake in this study. Through a prospective-longitudinal study design, infants were tested twice: at 1-3 days after birth and at three months of age.

Aim: The study evaluated the risk of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHR) in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing dialysis METHODS: We identified 18 905 patients newly diagnosed with ESRD, comprising 6382 patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) and 12 523 patients on hemodialysis (HD) using Taiwan's National Health Insurance claims data from 2000 to 2010. A total of 76 520 controls without kidney disease were randomly selected with frequency matched with the ESRD group by age and sex. We further established additional cohorts with 6375 patients on PD and 6375 patients on HD matched by their propensity scores.

Objective: To investigate whether adenotonsillectomy reduces upper respiratory tract infections (URIs) in the pediatric population.

Methods And Subjects: We identified 415 children, aged ≤18 years who had undergone adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy during the period from 1999 to 2006, from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. The comparison group consisted of 1630 children without the surgery randomly selected from the same database frequency matched with sex, age and the surgery date (index date).

Nontuberculous mycobacterial otomastoiditis is rare and can be easily confused with various different forms of otitis media. We describe the case of a 50-year-old woman who presented with left-sided chronic otitis media that had persisted for more than 1 year. It was not eradicated by standard antimicrobial therapy and surgical debridement.

Objective: Voice pitch carries important cues for speech perception in humans. Recent studies have shown the feasibility of recording the frequency-following response (FFR) to voice pitch in normal-hearing listeners. The presence of such a response, however, has been dependent on subjective interpretation of experimenters.
