Background: The caries severity in childhood may predict caries conditions in the future and even in adulthood in caries risk models. Nevertheless, the rate of recurrent caries after treatment of severe early childhood caries is high and correlated with behavioural factors, rather than clinical indicators. Compliance with the caries control programme has been demonstrated to prevent root caries development in head and neck cancer patients, suggesting that compliance with treatment protocols is a more important key to bringing about successful outcomes than treatment protocols themselves.

Although N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonism has been shown to have a neuroprotective effect in many preclinical stroke models, the efficacy of this antiexcitotoxicity strategy in clinical trials in stroke patients has been disappointing. Interestingly, it has been reported that NMDAR antagonism is not neuroprotective in C57BL/6 mice subjected to distal middle cerebral artery occlusion (dMCAO), supporting the notion that whether these treatments are neuroprotective depends on the type of cerebral ischemia. However, because C57BL/6 mice are inherently resistant to excitotoxicity, the reported lack of neuroprotection could also be explained by the difference in the mouse strain studied rather than the stroke model used.

Using poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as a model conjugated polymer and atomistic molecular dynamics simulations with carefully verified force fields, we performed in-depth investigations of solvation shell properties of P3HT chains (15 repeating units per chain) in two representative groups of non-polar (or aprotic) organic solvents (better solvents: ortho-dichlorobenzene, bromobenzene, and chlorobenzene; poorer solvents: chloroform, para-xylene, and toluene). We demonstrated that solvation shell relaxation properties in P3HT solutions dictate the formation of regular π-π associations and, hence, crystallinity through the initial chain association and subsequent chain sliding. In contrast, the mean features of polymer-solvent interactions, including solvation free energy and radial distribution function, present little or no difference for all solvent media investigated.

Cocaine and other addictive drugs are known to stimulate microglia, and microglia in turn have been shown to play roles in both the development and mitigation of drug dependence. For instance, cocaine can directly bind to surface receptors on microglia and trigger their release of interleukin-1β, which promotes addictive behaviors; however, cocaine also indirectly stimulates microglia by elevating dopamine, which causes microglia to impair long-lasting neuronal changes related to cocaine use. The seemingly opposing roles of microglia beg the question of what the net effect of microglial presence is on cocaine-induced behavioral changes.

Consumption of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) rich fatty fish is known to provide an array of health benefits. However, high temperature in food preparation, such as pan-frying, potentially degrades eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) of the n-3 PUFAs by heat oxidation. The addition of antioxidant condiments, and herbs in particular, may retard PUFA peroxidation and preserve EPA and DHA during pan-frying.
