Background: An ex-27-week gestation female infant developed bilateral forearm nodules at 4 weeks of life during treatment for methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia. A pure growth of Candida albicans was isolated on culture of both sterile aspiration of the forearm abscess and urine without evidence of methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus . The patient went on to develop bilateral obstructive renal fungal bezoars at 11 weeks of life.

In this study, we report the implementation of a comprehensive wastewater surveillance testing program at a university campus in Singapore to identify Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infected individuals and the usage of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) as well as other emerging contaminants (ECs). This unique co-monitoring program simultaneously measured SARS-CoV-2 with chemical markers/contaminants as the COVID-19 situation evolved from pandemic to endemic stages, following a nationwide mass vaccination drive. SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations in wastewater from campus dormitories were measured using real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and corroborated with the number of symptomatic COVID-19 cases confirmed with the antigen rapid test (ART).

Ozanimod is approved in multiple countries for the treatment of adults with either relapsing multiple sclerosis or moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis. Ozanimod is metabolized in humans to form seven active plasma metabolites, including two major active metabolites CC112273 and CC1084037, and an inactive metabolite. Here, the binding and activity of ozanimod and its metabolites across human sphingosine 1-phosphate receptors were determined.

Varicella is a highly contagious disease caused by Varicella-zoster virus (VZV). The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) adopted the routine administration of varicella vaccine to varicella non-immune mothers postpartum before leaving the facility per the Advisory Committee in Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendation of Varicella prevention. Ozanimod, a sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) receptor modulator that binds with high affinity selectively to S1P receptor subtypes 1 (S1P) and 5 (S1P), is approved for the treatment of relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS) in multiple countries. Ozanimod profiling revealed a species difference in its potency for S1P in mouse, rat, and canine compared with that for human and monkey. Site-directed mutagenesis identified amino acid alanine at position 120 to be responsible for loss of activity for mouse, rat, and canine S1P, and mutation back to threonine as in human/monkey S1P restored activity.

Dengue is hyper-endemic in Singapore and Malaysia, and daily movement rates between the two countries are consistently high, allowing inference on the role of local transmission and imported dengue cases. This paper describes a custom built sparse space-time autoregressive (SSTAR) model to infer and forecast contemporaneous and future dengue transmission patterns in Singapore and 16 administrative regions within Malaysia, taking into account connectivity and geographical adjacency between regions as well as climatic factors. A modification to forecast impulse responses is developed for the case of the SSTAR and is used to simulate changes in dengue transmission in neighbouring regions following a disturbance.

Cat scratch disease is known to be a generally benign, self-resolving illness associated with non-specific symptoms, including lymphadenopathy, fever, fatigue, anorexia, and headaches. However, it can also cause disseminated disease with a wide range of manifestations, including liver and spleen microabscesses, osteomyelitis, encephalitis, and uveitis. Eighteen pediatric cases of disseminated cat scratch disease at a single center in Hawai'i are described.

Methods: All nasopharyngeal samples tested in patients presenting to Monash Health, Melbourne, Australia, from August 2009 to July 2015 by means of multiplex tandem polymerase chain reaction using the Respiratory Pathogen 12Plex kit (AusDiagnostics) were included in the analysis.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs frequently in people with Down syndrome (DS) with reported prevalences ranging between 55% and 97%, compared to 1-4% in the neurotypical pediatric population. Sleep studies are often uncomfortable, costly, and poorly tolerated by individuals with DS. The objective of this study was to construct a tool to identify individuals with DS unlikely to have moderate or severe sleep OSA and in whom sleep studies might offer little benefit.
