When one complication begets another - A case report of radial artery pseudoaneurysm following radial artery occlusion post-transradial coronary angiography.

The transradial approach for coronary angiography and intervention is the preferred approach because of its superior safety profile as compared to the transfemoral approach. However, like all procedures, transradial approach is not free from complications. In this case, we describe a unique case of a large symptomatic radial artery pseudoaneurysm requiring urgent surgical intervention.

Acute Scrotum Secondary to Torsion of a Tunica Vaginalis Cyst.

This is a case of an 8-year-old boy with a chief complaint of left-lower-quadrate abdominal pain for 3 days. Examination revealed swollen left hemi-scrotum and scrotal ultrasound showed a para-testicular cystic mass, which was later proven to be a torsion of a benign scrotal tunica cyst during emergent scrotal exploration. Torsion of the tunica vaginalis cyst is a rare cause of acute scrotum, and we present this case to share our experience of diagnosis and management of this peculiar disease.

A mega-phylogeny of the Annonaceae: taxonomic placement of five enigmatic genera and support for a new tribe, Phoenicantheae.

The Annonaceae, the largest family in the early-divergent order Magnoliales, comprises 107 genera and c. 2,400 species. Previous molecular phylogenetic studies targeting different taxa have generated large quantities of partially overlapping DNA sequence data for many species, although a large-scale phylogeny based on the maximum number of representatives has never been reconstructed.

Several evolutionary lineages in the early divergent angiosperm family Annonaceae possess flowers with a distinctive pollinator trapping mechanism, in which floral phenological events are very precisely timed in relation with pollinator activity patterns. This contrasts with previously described angiosperm pollinator traps, which predominantly function as pitfall traps. We assess the circadian rhythms of pollinators independently of their interactions with flowers, and correlate these data with detailed assessments of floral phenology.

A phylogenetic study of the genus Goniothalamus (Annonaceae) is presented using maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian approaches, with 65 species sampled (48.5% of the genus) based on sequences of nine chloroplast DNA regions (11,214 aligned positions). The resultant phylogeny clearly indicates that Goniothalamus is monophyletic.

We present the case of a 42-year-old female who presented to our emergency department (ED) complaining of epigastric pain for four days. She had been seen in the outpatient department and ED previously for evaluation, but continued to experience epigastric pain with fever. Emergency panendoscopy was performed and a toothpick was discovered impacted in the duodenal bulb.

Diversity of Archaea in marine sediments from Skan Bay, Alaska, including cultivated methanogens, and description of Methanogenium boonei sp. nov.

Methanogenesis in cold marine sediments is a globally important process leading to methane hydrate deposits, cold seeps, physical instability of sediment, and atmospheric methane emissions. We employed a multidisciplinary approach that combined culture-dependent and -independent analyses with geochemical measurements in the sediments of Skan Bay, Alaska (53 degrees N, 167 degrees W), to investigate methanogenesis there. Cultivation-independent analyses of the archaeal community revealed that uncultivated microbes of the kingdoms Euryarchaeota and Crenarchaeota are present at Skan Bay and that methanogens constituted a small proportion of the archaeal community.
