Since their first discovery, -heterocyclic carbenes have had a significant impact on organometallic chemistry. Due to their nature as strong σ-donor and π-acceptor ligands, they are exceptionally well suited to stabilize Au(I) and Au(III) complexes in biological environments. Over the last decade, the development of rationally designed NHCAu(I/III) complexes to specifically target DNA has led to a new "gold rush" in bioinorganic chemistry.

Electron diffraction enables structure determination of organic small molecules using crystals that are too small for conventional X-ray crystallography. However, because of uncertainties in the experimental parameters, notably the detector distance, the unit-cell parameters and the geometry of the structural models are typically less accurate and precise compared with results obtained by X-ray diffraction. Here, an iterative procedure to optimize the unit-cell parameters obtained from electron diffraction using idealized restraints is proposed.

Purpose: Clinical phenotypes in Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) according to the patterns of affecting organs have different risks of malignancies. We attempt to determine the association of malignancies with IgG4-related ophthalmic disease (IgG4-ROD).

Discovery and Genetic Code Expansion of a Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Hydrolase from the Human Saliva Metagenome for the Degradation and Bio-Functionalization of PET.

We report a bioinformatic workflow and subsequent discovery of a new polyethylene terephthalate (PET) hydrolase, which we named MG8, from the human saliva metagenome. MG8 has robust PET plastic degradation activities under different temperature and salinity conditions, outperforming several naturally occurring and engineered hydrolases in degrading PET. Moreover, we genetically encoded 2,3-diaminopropionic acid (DAP) in place of the catalytic serine residue of MG8, thereby converting a PET hydrolase into a covalent binder for bio-functionalization of PET.

Eye-Tracking Metrics for Figure-Copying Processes in Early- vs. Late-Onset Alzheimer's Disease.

Visuospatial dysfunction is a common symptom in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). To more focus on copying processes rather than on finally completed figures, we conceptually split the copying processes into three stages: visuoperceptual function, visuoconstructional function, and working memory function. We constructed perceptual and working spaces to investigate the different stages of copying, and then, we compared the number and duration of fixations and saccades and the number of switches across the two spaces.

Impact of Body Mass Index and Sarcopenia on Short- and Long-Term Outcomes After Esophageal Cancer Surgery: An Observational Study.

Background: The effects of specific body mass index (BMI) category and sarcopenia within each BMI category on outcomes in patients undergoing esophageal surgery with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma have not been thoroughly examined.

Methods: This study included 1141 patients. Sarcopenia was determined with a total psoas muscle cross-sectional area at the level of the third lumbar vertebra in computed tomography.

HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) remain an unsolved problem that persists despite using antiretroviral therapy. We have obtained data showing that HIV-gp120 protein contributes to neurodegeneration through metabolic reprogramming. This led to decreased ATP levels, lower mitochondrial DNA copy numbers, and loss of mitochondria , all-important for mitochondrial biogenesis.

Beyond CSI: Calibrating public beliefs about the reliability of forensic science through openness and transparency.

What drives public beliefs about the credibility of a scientific field? This question is increasingly important, with recent discussion of a "reproducibility crisis" affecting many fields. Such discussions are vital in forensic science, a discipline that has experienced severe scrutiny from both the media and large oversight bodies. In this paper, we make three contributions to this discussion.

Recently, aducanumab, a beta amyloid targeted immunotherapy, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of Alzheimer's dementia (AD). Although many questions need to be answered, this approval provides a promising hope for the development of AD drugs that could be supported by new biomarkers such as blood-based ones and composite neuropsychological tests that can confirm pathologic changes in early stages of AD. It is important to elucidate the complexity of AD which is known to be associated with other factors such as vascular etiologies and neuro-inflammation.

Health literacy (HL) is critical to find, understand and use health information for adopting appropriate health behavior, especially during a pandemic crisis in which people can be exposed to an overwhelming amount of information from different media. To this end, we conducted an online study to first validate the measure of COronaVIrus Disease appeared in 2019 (COVID-19) health literacy (CoHL) and then investigated its relationships with locus of control (LoC), news information search and the adoption of protective behaviors (PBs) during the first lockdown in France. We first showed the good structural and psychometric qualities of the CoHL scale on a 3-dimensional structure: the Critical dimension, the Extraction/Communicative and the Application/Communicative dimension.

Sex trafficking is serious form of gender-based violence that results in profound adverse health outcomes, yet one that is poorly understood. New York City is a major hub for sex trafficking, with a significant but unquantified number of victims originating from East Asian countries and trafficked via illicit massage businesses. Peer-reviewed studies among Asian survivors of international criminal sex trafficking do not exist.

Reactivity of Diamines in Acyclic Diamino Carbene Gold Complexes.

Acyclic diamino carbenes (ADCs) are interesting alternatives to their more widely studied N-heterocyclic carbene counterparts, particularly due to their greater synthetic accessibility and properties such as increased sigma donation and structural flexibility. ADC gold complexes are typically obtained through the reaction of equimolar amounts of primary/secondary amines on gold-coordinated isocyanide ligands. As such, the reaction of diamine nucleophiles to isocyanide gold complexes was expected to lead to bis-ADC gold compounds with potential applications in catalysis or as novel precursors for gold nanomaterials.

Injuries within the peripheral nervous system (PNS) lead to sensory and motor deficits, as well as neuropathic pain, which strongly impair the life quality of patients. Although most current PNS injury treatment approaches focus on using growth factors/small molecules to stimulate the regrowth of the injured nerves, these methods neglect another important factor that strongly hinders axon regeneration-the presence of axonal inhibitory molecules. Therefore, this work sought to explore the potential of pathway inhibition in promoting sciatic nerve regeneration.

Climate change and environmental degradation caused by human activities are having an irrefutable impact on human health, particularly mental health. People working in the environment sector are confronted with these impacts daily. This exploratory study was conducted as a response to concern in the sector about rising levels of worry and distress, and a need for organizational knowledge about effective workplace mental health strategies.

Two quantitative trait loci, Sub1 (conferring submergence tolerance) and AG1 (conferring anaerobic germination), were recently pyramided into a single genetic background, without compromising any desirable agronomic traits, leading to the development of Ciherang-Sub1 + AG1 (CSA).

Assessing the Knowledge of the Osteopathic Profession in New York City's Eastern European Communities.

Background According to the decennial Osteopathic Survey of Healthcare in America, the osteopathic profession has been steadily gaining recognition in the United States, particularly among the White/Caucasian demographic. This, however, does not take into account immigrant European communities that, while racially classified as White/Caucasian, may be unexposed to osteopathic physicians (DOs) in their home country and may be reticent to osteopathic manipulative medicine. Data on non-English-speaking communities are limited and can mask the need for further outreach.
