Pollen's practically-indestructible shell structure has long inspired the biomimetic design of organic materials. However, there is limited understanding of how the mechanical, chemical, and adhesion properties of pollen are biologically controlled and whether strategies can be devised to manipulate pollen beyond natural performance limits. Here, we report a facile approach to transform pollen grains into soft microgel by remodeling pollen shells.

Microtubules are cytoskeletal structures critical for mitosis, cell motility, and protein and organelle transport and are a validated target for anticancer drugs. However, how tubulins are regulated and recruited to support these distinct cellular processes is incompletely understood. Posttranslational modifications of tubulins are proposed to regulate microtubule function and dynamics.

This is a case report on the use of Eckardt keratoprosthesis for pars plana vitrectomy in a patient with endophthalmitis and suppurative keratitis that developed after cataract surgery. A 79-year-old woman developed acute-onset infectious endophthalmitis and suppurative keratitis after cataract surgery that failed to respond to treatment with antibiotic eyedrops and intravitreal antibiotic injection. Using a temporary keratoprosthesis that enabled sufficient visualization, vitrectomy was performed, followed by therapeutic keratoplasty using a cryopreserved donor cornea.

The core objective of this study was to determine the neuroprotective properties of deep brain stimulation of the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus on the apoptosis of the hippocampus. The pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus is a prime target for Parkinson's disease and is a crucial component in a feedback loop connected with the hippocampus. Deep brain stimulation was employed as a potential tool to evaluate the neuroprotective properties of hippocampal apoptosis.

Background: Tigecycline has potential utility in the treatment of complex polymicrobial infections or those caused by MDR organisms in the ambulatory care setting owing to its breadth of antimicrobial coverage. Whilst licensed for twice-daily IV administration, its long half-life permits once-daily administration, which may facilitate successful outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (OPAT).

Methods: A retrospective case series of patients receiving once-daily tigecycline under OPAT was analysed at a single-centre NHS acute hospital (January 2016-June 2018).

Epigenetic therapy has been demonstrated to be a viable strategy for breast cancer treatment. In this study, we report the anti-tumor activity of a hydroxamate-based histone deacetylase (HDAC)8-selective inhibitor, HMC, in breast cancer cells. MTT assays showed that HMC inhibited cell viability of MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells with IC values of 7.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a serious public health issue worldwide with increased mortality as well as severe disabilities and injuries caused by falls and road accidents. Unfortunately, there is no approved therapy for TBIs, and bladder dysfunction is a striking symptom. Accordingly, we attempted to analyze bladder dysfunction and voiding efficiency in rats with a TBI at different time-course intervals.

As a member of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) family, ERBB3 plays an essential role in development and disease independent of inherently inactive kinase domain. Recently, ERBB3 has been found to bind to ATP and has catalytic activity in vitro. However, the biological function of ERBB3 kinase activity remains elusive in vivo.

Activating the intrinsic apoptosis pathway with small molecules is now a clinically validated approach to cancer therapy. In contrast, blocking apoptosis to prevent the death of healthy cells in disease settings has not been achieved. Caspases have been favored, but they act too late in apoptosis to provide long-term protection.
