This study aims to assess the associations among students' perceptions of climate change, university social responsibility (USR), and environmental sustainability practices at a medical university. It also aims to identify the factors associated with these elements. A cross-sectional self-report study was conducted with a total sample of 416 undergraduate students from a medical university in Taiwan during October 2019.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated changes in energy and macronutrient intake among Taiwanese adults aged 65 and older across three periods: 1999-2000, 2005-2008, and 2013-2016, using 24-hour dietary recall data collected through surveys.
  • - Findings revealed that about 40% of older adults had low energy intake in 2013-2016, while those meeting recommended intake levels for carbohydrates, fats, and proteins increased over the studied years; however, high fat intake also became more prevalent in this last period.
  • - The results highlight evolving dietary patterns in this demographic, which can inform health policy and nutrition education efforts aimed at addressing the challenges of an unbalanced diet

Background: The actual burden of dental caries prevalence varies with the caries assessment tool used. Therefore, the present study evaluated the caries diagnostic potentials of Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT); International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) II and Caries Assessment Spectrum and Treatment (CAST) indices in estimating the caries prevalence rate of first permanent molar (FPM) in Saudi male children aged 7-9 years.

Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study included 390 children by multistage stratified cluster sampling method in Al-Jouf Province, Saudi Arabia.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the interacted association between EDNRA and EDN1 polymorphisms and gender, regular exercise, and obesity status on carotid intima media thickness (IMT) in community- dwelling subjects of the Taichung Community Health Study. Five single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs rs1395821, rs1878406, rs5333, rs1800541, and rs5370) of the EDNRA and EDN1 gene were examined in 480 participants from 160 families. The IMT protocol involves scanning the common carotid arteries (CCAs), the carotid bifurcations (bulb), and the origins (first 1 cm) of the internal carotid arteries (ICAs).

Background: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes has rapidly increased in the Taiwanese population with the increasing prevalence of a sedentary lifestyle and high-calorie dietary intake. This study aims to determine the annual trends of the prevalence and incidence of diagnosed type 2 diabetes among adults in Taiwan from 2000 to 2007.

Methods: A population-based study of all residents aged 20 years and over (12,191,076 in 2000 and 18,772,180 in 2007) enrolled in the National Health Insurance (NHI) program, the database of which was used to identify patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Background: High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) is an easily measured inflammatory biomarker. This study compared the association of percent body fat mass (%FM), body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) with hs-CRP in a Taiwanese population.

Methods: A total of 1669 subjects aged 40-88 years were recruited in 2004 in a metropolitan city in Taiwan.

Background: Although National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP), International Diabetes Federation (IDF), American Heart Association and National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (AHA/NHLBI), World Health Organization (WHO), and the European Group for the Study of Insulin Resistance (EGIR) definitions of metabolic syndrome (MetS) have been commonly used by studies, little is known about agreement among these five definitions. We examined the agreement among these five definitions and explored their relationship with risk factors of cardiovascular disease in a Taiwan population.

Methods: A total of 1305 subjects aged 40 years and over in Taiwan were analyzed.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Chih-Yi Hsiao"

  • - Chih-Yi Hsiao's recent research focuses on public health issues in Taiwan, examining dietary trends, metabolic syndrome definitions, and university student perceptions of sustainability, highlighting health conditions and societal responsibilities within different demographics.
  • - One study assessed the dietary intake trends of older Taiwanese adults over multiple periods, revealing variations in energy and macronutrient consumption, which can inform public health interventions to address nutrition in aging populations.
  • - Another notable study explored the relationship between genetic polymorphisms and cardiovascular health metrics, emphasizing the role of lifestyle factors like exercise and obesity on carotid artery thickness, contributing valuable insights to the field of genetic epidemiology.*
