Direct plating medium on cefsulodin-irgasan-novobiocin agar was as effective as 2-day enrichment in peptone-sorbitol-bile salts broth for recovery of Yersinia enterocolitica from fecal samples of patients with gastrointestinal disturbances. Alkali treatment of fecal specimens failed to enhance recovery of Y. enterocolitica through either method.

Early-onset Pseudomonas aeruginosa sepsis and Yersinia enterocolitica neonatal infection: a unique combination in a preterm infant.

The purpose of this communication is to report the occurrence of early-onset Pseudomonas aeruginosa sepsis and Yersinia enterocolitica neonatal infection. This case serves as a reminder of the changing spectrum of neonatal septicaemia.

Yersinia enterocolitica infection in pregnant mice and their offspring.

In order to investigate the susceptibility to Yersinia enterocolitica infection before and during pregnancy, and the potential vertical transmission to the offspring, female adult mice were intravenously inoculated with 3 x 10(4) CFU of Y enterocolitica either 7 days before conception or on day 8 of pregnancy. Infection was assessed by determining the number of bacterial counts in spleen of mothers, entire body of fetuses, placentas, and spleen of newborns. Mice challenged 7 days before pregnancy had cured at the time of mating.

Decreased baseline beta-lactamase production and inducibility associated with increased piperacillin susceptibility of Pseudomonas cepacia isolated from children with cystic fibrosis.

The incidence of pulmonary infections in children with cystic fibrosis caused by Pseudomonas cepacia, an organism which may possess an inducible beta-lactamase, has increased since 1978. Seven of 13 sputum isolates of P. cepacia from children with cystic fibrosis were classified as inducible by quantitative enzyme production following preincubation with 100, 200, or 400 micrograms/ml of cefoxitin.

Assessment of plasmid profile, exoenzyme activity, and virulence in recent human isolates of Yersinia enterocolitica.

We examined a group of 23 recent clinical isolates of Yersinia enterocolitica recovered from symptomatic patients residing in the New York, N.Y. area.

Clostridium difficile isolation in leukemic children on maintenance cancer chemotherapy. A preliminary study.

Between December 1982 and November 1983, stool specimens from 15 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, who were on maintenance cancer chemotherapy, were examined weekly for the presence of Clostridium difficile and its toxin. Four out of 15 patients were positive for C. difficile: three patients had stool specimens that did not contain toxin, but cultures yielded growth of toxigenic C.

Status of immunity of newborns against Yersinia enterocolitica: a preliminary report.

Out of 221 cord blood specimens assayed by whole cell agglutination for antibodies against Y. enterocolitica serogroup 0:3, 0:5,27, and 0:8, only four showed agglutinins despite the high percentage (33%) of agglutinating antibodies in 151 sera of pregnant women, ranging in titer from 4 to 32. Of 199 different cord sera tested, 25% to 28% showed low-level antibodies against erythrocytes treated with individual heat-extracts from Y.

Serum resistance of Yersinia enterocolitica expressed in absence of other virulence markers.

Serum resistance of Yersinia enterocolitica after growth at 37 and 25 degrees C appears to be specific for serogroup O:3 and appears to be expressed even in the absence of other phenotypic virulence-associated markers, such as the presence of V antigen, autoagglutination, and calcium dependency after growth at 37 degrees C.
