Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a major public health concern worldwide, associated with high risk of mortality and morbidity related to cardiovascular and adverse limb events. Despite significant advances in both medical and interventional therapies, PAD often remains under-diagnosed, and the prognosis of patients can be difficult to predict. Artificial intelligence (AI) has brought a wide range of opportunities to improve the management of cardiovascular diseases, from advanced imaging analysis to machine-learning (ML)-based predictive models, and medical data management using natural language processing (NLP).

Liver vessel segmentation from routinely performed medical imaging is a useful tool for diagnosis, treatment planning and delivery, and prognosis evaluation for many diseases, particularly liver cancer. A precise representation of liver anatomy is crucial to define the extent of the disease and, when suitable, the consequent resective or ablative procedure, in order to guarantee a radical treatment without sacrificing an excessive volume of healthy liver. Once mainly performed manually, with notable cost in terms of time and human energies, vessel segmentation is currently realized through the application of artificial intelligence (AI), which has gained increased interest and development of the field.

Article Synopsis
  • The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is an effective obesity treatment, and a variant called banded-RYGB may offer advantages like better weight loss and fewer complications.
  • The meta-analysis included 13 studies with over 8,500 patients comparing outcomes between banded-RYGB and standard RYGB.
  • Results indicated that banded-RYGB led to significantly higher excess weight loss at 1, 2, and 5 years post-surgery, although the difference in postoperative complications was not statistically significant.

Background: The obesity epidemic has led to an increase in the proportion of patients with chronic liver disease due to metabolic associated steatosic liver disease and in the prevalence of obesity in patients with cirrhosis. Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) has been proven to determine weight loss, obesity-related medical problems remission, and liver steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis improvement. However, cirrhosis and portal hypertension are well-known risk factors for increased morbidity and mortality after surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares two surgical methods, Hartmann's procedure (HP) and resection with primary anastomosis (RPA), for treating acute left-sided colonic emergencies among 1215 patients from 204 centers globally.
  • Results showed that while HP was the more common treatment (57.3%), RPA was favored for younger patients with fewer health issues and those needing surgery sooner.
  • The study concluded that although HP is still widely used, RPA might be the better option, emphasizing the importance of patient characteristics and surgeon experience in determining treatment choice.

The degeneration of intervertebral disc (IVD) is a disease of the entire joint between two vertebrae in the spine caused by loss of extracellular matrix (ECM) integrity, to date with no cure. The various regenerative approaches proposed so far have led to very limited successes. An emerging opportunity arises from the use of decellularized ECM as a scaffolding material that, directly or in combination with other materials, has greatly facilitated the advancement of tissue engineering.

Background: Anastomotic leakage (AL) as a result of creation of a colorectal/anal anastomosis still represents a frequent complication of colorectal surgery, with short- and long-term consequences on postoperative morbidity, quality of life and oncological outcomes. However, early diagnosis of AL may result in improved outcomes. The aims of this study were to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of water-soluble contrast enema (WSCE), contrast enema computed tomography (CECT) and endoscopy in identifying AL and to identify the diagnostic procedure that is most accurate.

In recent years, various physical exercise interventions have been developed with a view to reducing comorbidity and morbidity rates among patients with chronic diseases. Regular physical exercise has been shown to reduce hypertension and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes. Diabetes and obesity are often associated with the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, which can lead to liver fibrosis and then (in some cases) nonalcoholic steatohepatitis cirrhosis.
