Background/objectives: A proper posture is essential for musculoskeletal health, and a poor posture can lead to low back pain. To address the limitations of traditional text-based questionnaires, this study developed and validated a visualized posture assessment questionnaire for evaluating daily postures related to low back pain. The questionnaire was administered in Taiwan and designed using Traditional Chinese language.

Graphene nanoribbons have many extraordinary electrical properties and are the candidates for semiconductor industry. In this research, we propose a design of Coved GNRs with periodic structure ranged from 4 to 8 nm or more, of which the size is within practical feature sizes by advanced lithography tools. The carrier transport properties of Coved GNRs with the periodic coved shape are designed to break the localized electronic state and reducing electron-phonon scattering.

Sexual dysfunction is a common problem for men with diabetes. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is known to ameliorate erectile function in aging rats. However, there has not yet been a report to evaluate its effects on diabetic male rat sexual behavior in the literature.

Aim: Laparoscopic anterior resection with natural orifice specimen extraction (NOSE) has favourable short-term outcomes. However, NOSE is rarely adopted for left hemicolectomy procedures. This study aimed to review the feasibility, safety and short-term outcomes of transrectal NOSE in patients undergoing laparoscopic left hemicolectomy.

Rationale: Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) is known to promote reproductive functions. However, its role in noncontact erection (NCE) of penis initiated by brain regions including medial preoptic area (MPOA) and paraventricular nucleus (PVN) regions responsible for sexual behavior has not been investigated.

Objectives: Therefore, this study initially investigated the effects of LBP on male sexual function, and subsequently, the mechanistic insight was investigated through assessing the expression of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) in the MPOA and PVN.

Background: The incidence of falls on inpatient oncology units indicated the need for quality improvement. This project aimed to reduce falls by implementing a fall reduction plan including the "Traffic Light" Fall Risk Assessment Tool (TL-FRAT).

Local Problem: We retrospectively reviewed the oncology unit fall data from January 2013 to September 2014 and found that the average fall incidence was high.

The peripheral administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induces depressive-like behavior. Anhedonia is a core symptom of depression, defined as a loss of the capacity to experience pleasure. The present study used the sucrose preference test to investigate the influence of Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) on LPS-induced anhedonia in male rats.

Article Synopsis
  • A patient developed a severe lung infection (empyema thoracis) and a bloodstream infection (candidemia) caused by the fungus Candida albicans.
  • Despite receiving treatments like human recombinant activated protein C and intravenous fluconazole, the patient's condition worsened.
  • The patient ultimately died from severe shock and multiple organ failure just 8 days after being admitted to the hospital.

Aim: To investigate the role of nuclear factor of activated T cell 2 (NFAT2), the major NFAT protein in peripheral T cells, in sustained T cell activation and intractable inflammation in human ulcerative colitis (UC).

Methods: We used two-dimensional gel-electrophoresis, immunohistochemistry, double immunohistochemical staining, and confocal microscopy to inspect the expression of NFAT2 in 107, 15, 48 and 5 cases of UC, Crohn's disease (CD), non-specific colitis, and 5 healthy individuals, respectively.

Results: Up-regulation with profound nucleo-translocation/activation of NFAT2 of lamina propria mononuclear cells (LPMC) of colonic mucosa was found specifically in the affected colonic mucosa from patients with UC, as compared to CD or NC (P < 0.

Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy and toxicity of oxaliplatin in combination with weekly bolus 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and leucovorin (LV) in patients with 5-FU-pretreated advanced colorectal cancer.

Methods: A total of 39 patients with documented 5-FU-resistant advanced colorectal cancer were enrolled. All 39 patients had previously received weekly high-dose 5-FU/LV (2,600 mg/m(2) 5-FU plus 100 mg/m(2) LV as 24-hour infusion) as first-line chemotherapy for metastatic disease.

The primary objective of this study was to determine the maximum tolerable dose (MTD) and dose-limiting toxicity (DLT) for bolus 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) administered on a biweekly schedule and in combination with fixed doses of leucovorin (LV) and oxaliplatin. The secondary objectives were to evaluate the toxicity profile and antitumor activity of this regimen for pre-treated patients with advanced colorectal cancer. A total of 26 patients with documented fluoropyrimidine-resistant, advanced colorectal cancer were enrolled into this phase I study.
