Chronic ultraviolet (UV) exposure may cause skin damage, disrupt skin barrier function, and promote wrinkle formation. UV induces oxidative stress and inflammation, which results in extracellular matrix degradation in the dermis and epidermal hyperplasia. Our previous study demonstrated that fisetin exerts photoprotective activity by inhibiting mitogen-activated protein kinase/activator protein-1/matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) activation.

Synthesis of Spirolactams and Fused Bicyclic Lactams via Acid-Promoted Cyclolactamization of (Ethynyl(tosyl)amino)methyl-Tethered Cyclohex-2-enols.

A simple synthetic method to construct the spirolactam framework from TfOH-catalyzed spirolactamization of cyclohex-2-enols bearing a tethered (arylethynyl(tosyl)amino)methyl moiety is described. The reaction proceeded through a keteniminium-allylic carbocation intermediate. Hydration of the keteniminium ion, followed by attack of the resulting enolate onto the tethered allylic carbocation, provided the spirolactam ring skeleton.

Human type II topoisomerase (Top2) isoforms, hTop2α and hTop2β, are targeted by some of the most successful anticancer drugs. These drugs induce Top2-mediated DNA cleavage to trigger cell-death pathways. The potency of these drugs correlates positively with their efficacy in stabilizing the enzyme-mediated DNA breaks.

Objective: This study aims to explore the relationships among nurses' attitudes, negative perceptions, and negative acts regarding workplace bullying under the framework of the theory of planned behavior (TPB).

Effect of acupuncture on hot flush and menopause symptoms in breast cancer- A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Many breast cancer patients suffer from hot flush and medical menopause as side effects of treatment. Some patients undergo acupuncture, rather than hormone therapy, to relieve these symptoms, but the efficacy of acupuncture is uncertain. This meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of acupuncture on hot flush and menopause symptoms in women with breast cancer.

A new technique to measure online bullying: online computerized adaptive testing.

Background: Workplace bullying has been measured in many studies to investigate mental health issues. None uses online computerized adaptive testing (CAT) with cutting points to report bully prevalence at workplace.

Objective: To develop an online CAT to examine person being bullied and verify whether item response theory-based CAT can be applied online for nurses to measure exposure to workplace bullying.

The Effects of a Mindfulness Meditation Program on Quality of Life in Cancer Outpatients: An Exploratory Study.

Objective: Numerous studies have investigated the efficacy of mindfulness meditation (MM) in managing quality of life (QoL) in cancer populations, yet only a few have studied the Asian population. The aim of this exploratory study is to evaluate the effect of a MM program on the QoL outcomes in Taiwanese cancer outpatients.

Methods: Patients with various cancer diagnoses were enrolled and assigned to the MM group and usual care (UC) group.

Development of a Microsoft Excel tool for one-parameter Rasch model of continuous items: an application to a safety attitude survey.

Background: Many continuous item responses (CIRs) are encountered in healthcare settings, but no one uses item response theory's (IRT) probabilistic modeling to present graphical presentations for interpreting CIR results. A computer module that is programmed to deal with CIRs is required. To present a computer module, validate it, and verify its usefulness in dealing with CIR data, and then to apply the model to real healthcare data in order to show how the CIR that can be applied to healthcare settings with an example regarding a safety attitude survey.

Factors Predicting HBsAg Seroclearance and Alanine Transaminase Elevation in HBeAg-Negative Hepatitis B Virus-Infected Patients with Persistently Normal Liver Function.

Background: A certain proportion of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected patients with persistently normal alanine transaminase (ALT) levels have significant fibrosis. Using liver stiffness measurements (Fibroscan®) and laboratory data, including serum ALT, quantitative HBsAg (qHBsAg), and HBV DNA, we attempted to predict the natural histories of these patients.

Methods: Non-cirrhotic HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B patients with persistently normal ALT were followed up prospectively with the end points of HBsAg seroclearance and ALT elevation above the upper limit of normal.

Background: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used increasingly as complementary medicine in cancer care. Kuan-Sin-Yin (KSY) is a TCM decoction containing seven herbs known to cause immunomodulation or anticancer activity, and which are associated with the TCM concept of Qi and energy supply. Kuan-Sin-Yin has cytostatic effects on cancer cells in animal models.

CuI-Catalyzed intramolecular aminocyanation of terminal alkynes in N-(2-ethynylphenyl)-N-sulfonylcyanamides was initiated by the formation of Cu-acetylide to trigger N-CN bond cleavage of the N-sulfonylcyanamide moiety followed by CN migration to form a β-cyano Cu-vinylidene intermediate. Subsequently, the indole ring closure furnished the corresponding 1-sulfonyl-3-cyanoindoles.

Using graphical representations to enhance the quality-of-care for colorectal cancer patients.

The study was to enhance adherence to quality-of-care guidelines for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients through plotting graphical representations. Rasch analysis was performed to examine the unidimensional measurement of the 13 core indicators. An author-made Excel module was applied to plot the so-called Wright map and KIDMAP in education field to report physicians' adherence to the quality-of-life guidelines.

Is Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy Really Safe in Long-Term Follow-Up? A Nationwide Retrospective 6-Year Age-Matched Non-Randomized Study.

Introduction: Shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) is widely used. However, several studies have reported increased blood pressure immediately after SWL. Until now, the association between SWL and new-onset hypertension has been a topic of discussion.

Simulation study of activities of daily living functions using online computerized adaptive testing.

Background: Computer adaptive testing (CAT) of the activities of daily living (ADL) functions is required (i) to reveal the advantages of using an efficient and accurate estimation method, (ii) to determine the cutpoint for classifying ADL strata in patients with stroke, and (iii) to evaluate the feasibility of online CAT used in clinical settings for smartphones.

Methods: Normally standardized distributions of ADL measurements were simulated using item parameters from published papers. We retrieved item parameters of the combined Barthel Index and Frenchay Activities Index from the literature (the 23-item comprehensive ADL [CADL] and 34-item ADL scales) and simulated three 1000-person measures from a normal standard CAT distribution: [i] CADL (CADL-CAT), [ii] ADL (ADL-CAT), and [iii] NAT (Non-Adaptive Testing).

In the present study, we tried to evaluate the potential protective effects of a synthetic green fluorescent protein (GFP) chromophore derivative, 4-chlorobenzyldene-1, 2-dimethylimidazolinone (Cl-BDI, called TC-22) on UVA- and UVB- induced stress responses in skin.

Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy Increases the Risk of New-onset Hypertension: A Nationwide 6-Year Follow-up Study.

Objective: To determine whether percutaneous nephrolithotomy or ureteroscopic lithotripsy leads to the development of hypertension, using the Taiwan National Health Insurance database.

Methods: Data were sourced from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database (LHID2000) of Taiwan, Republic of China, compiled by the Taiwan National Health Insurance database from 1996 to 2010. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy and ureteroscopic lithotripsy were studied as time-dependent covariates in a Cox proportional hazard model to estimate the hazard ratio for the effect of new-onset hypertension.

Methods: Systematic reviews of English and Chinese articles were conducted for relevant articles published between 1979 and 2014 in six electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, The Cochrane, PsycARTICLES, Airiti Library, and the Index of the Taiwan Periodical Literature System).
