Background: Empathy and communication are critical abilities for nursing students, and in recent years, scenario-based teaching has played a crucial role in fostering empathy and professional skill development. However, novice nursing students in basic nursing education often lack prior experience in patient communication, making it challenging for them to prepare adequately for scenarios and effectively handle difficulties in real-life situations. This deficiency also hampers participants' or observers' ability to engage in deep reflection, feedback, and learning.

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome presentations to emergency departments in the United States from 2015 to 2023.

Introduction: Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is a common condition prompting emergency department (ED) presentation. However, there are limited recent, large-scale, robust data available on the incidence, admission, and medical treatment of AWS in the ED.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of ED presentations for AWS from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2023, using Epic Cosmos.

The relationship between lung microbiota, airway inflammation, and outcomes in bronchiectasis with fixed airflow obstruction (FAO) remains unclear. This study explores these interactions in bronchiectasis patients, with and without FAO, and compares them to those diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Synergistic association of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor and metformin on liver and non-liver complications in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.

Objective: Type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (diabetic MASLD) frequently coexist and worsen liver and non-liver outcomes, but effective pharmacological therapies are limited. We aimed to evaluate the long-term effect of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor (SGLT-2i) on liver and non-liver outcomes among patients with diabetic MASLD.

Design: This population-based cohort study retrieved patients with diabetic MASLD from Merative Marketscan Research Databases (April 2013 and December 2021).

Sinusoidal obstruction syndrome/veno-occlusive disease (SOS/VOD) is a life-threatening complication which can develop after haemopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and some antibody-drug conjugates. Several SOS/VOD diagnostic and management guidelines exist, with the most recent and refined being the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation adult and paediatric guidelines. Timely diagnosis and effective management (including the availability of therapeutic options) significantly contribute to improved patient outcomes.

Purpose: Bronchiectasis is predominantly marked by neutrophilic inflammation. The relevance of type 2 biomarkers in disease severity and exacerbation risk is poorly understood. This study explores the clinical significance of these biomarkers in bronchiectasis patients.

2024 multidisciplinary consensus on image-guided lung tumor ablation from the Taiwan Academy of Tumor Ablation.

In this article, the multidisciplinary team of the Taiwan Academy of Tumor Ablation, who have expertise in treating lung cancer, present their perspectives on percutaneous image-guided thermal ablation (IGTA) of lung tumors. The modified Delphi technique was applied to reach a consensus on clinical practice guidelines concerning ablation procedures, including a comprehensive literature review, selection of panelists, creation of a rating form and survey, and arrangement of an in-person meeting where panelists agreed or disagreed on various points. The conclusion was a final rating and written summary of the agreement.

Towards safer and efficient formulations: Machine learning approaches to predict drug-excipient compatibility.

Predicting drug-excipient compatibility is a critical aspect of pharmaceutical formulation design. In this study, we introduced an innovative approach that leverages machine learning techniques to improve the accuracy of drug-excipient compatibility predictions. Mol2vec and 2D molecular descriptors combined with the stacking technique were used to improve the performance of the model.

Trapping and bypassing of suspended particulate matter, particulate nutrients and faecal indicator organisms in the river-estuary transition zone of a shallow macrotidal estuary.

Hydrodynamic controls of the transport of suspended particulate matter (SPM), particulate nutrients and faecal indicator organisms (FIOs) in the river-estuary transition zone (RETZ) of a shallow macrotidal estuary were studied on tidal and seasonal timescales. The RETZ was found to be a conduit for SPM rather than a zone of particle accumulation during spring tides, with complex size fractionation and biogeochemical exchanges of particulate nutrient/FIO compositions. The downstream RETZ was characterised by flood-dominant currents, but with ebb-dominant turbulence due to the suppression of flood tide turbulence by salinity stratification created by lateral convergence; this produced a net seaward mass transport of SPM.

High rate of postoperative upstaging of ductal carcinoma in situ when prioritizing ultrasound evaluation of mammography-detected lesions: a single-center retrospective cohort study.

Background: The initial diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) can be upstaged to invasive cancer after definitive surgery. This study aimed to identify risk factors for DCIS upstaging using routine breast ultrasonography and mammography (MG) and to propose a prediction model.

Methods: In this single-center retrospective study, patients initially diagnosed with DCIS (January 2016-December 2017) were enrolled (final sample size = 272 lesions).

Upregulation of pro-survival BCL-2 proteins or downregulation of cell death effectors BAX and BAK interferes with the initiation of the intrinsic apoptotic pathway. In normal cells, apoptosis can occur through pro-apoptotic BH3-only proteins interacting and inhibiting pro-survival BCL-2 proteins.

Efficacy of a multicomponent exercise training program intervention in community-dwelling older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic: A cluster randomized controlled trial.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused changes in lifestyle for older adults such as reduced physical activity and community participation. Community activity centers were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 82) or control arm (n = 85). The intervention comprised one 60 min group exercise session per week in weeks 1-8 and an online home exercise program in weeks 9-16.

Association of Direct-Acting Antiviral Therapy With Liver and Nonliver Complications and Long-term Mortality in Patients With Chronic Hepatitis C.

Importance: Chronic hepatitis C (CHC) and its complications are associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. However, large-scale data analysis of the long-term liver and nonliver effects of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment has been limited.

Objective: To assess the association of hepatitis C virus elimination through DAA treatment with the risk of liver and nonliver morbidity and mortality during long-term follow-up among a large nationwide cohort of insured patients with CHC in the US.

Assessment of the distribution and ecological risks of heavy metals in coastal sediments in Vietnam's Mong Cai area.

Coastal sediments in the Mong Cai area were collected and analyzed for grain size, heavy metals, total organic carbon, and isotopes (Pb, Ra, δN, δC) to assess sediment quality. The most common sediments were fine sand in surface sediment, very fine sand in core C1, and very coarse and coarse silt in core C2. The total organic carbon was highest in C2 next to the surface and lowest in C1, with content levels of 1.

Clinicopathological characteristics and long-term outcomes of plasmablastic lymphoma in British Columbia.

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is an aggressive and rare subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma with no standard-of-care therapy. We reviewed all patients diagnosed with histologically confirmed PBL in British Columbia, Canada between 1997 and 2019. Overall, 42 patients were identified, including 15 (36%) positive for HIV and nine (21%) on chronic immunosuppression.

Deep learning models for forecasting dengue fever based on climate data in Vietnam.

Background: Dengue fever (DF) represents a significant health burden in Vietnam, which is forecast to worsen under climate change. The development of an early-warning system for DF has been selected as a prioritised health adaptation measure to climate change in Vietnam.

Objective: This study aimed to develop an accurate DF prediction model in Vietnam using a wide range of meteorological factors as inputs to inform public health responses for outbreak prevention in the context of future climate change.

Lived Experiences of Newly Admitted to Long-Term Care Facilities among Older Adults with Disabilities in Taiwan.

This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of Taiwanese older adults with disabilities newly admitted to long-term care facilities (LTCFs). A descriptive phenomenological method was used. Colaizzi's method analysis of 15 participant interviews revealed six themes: "living here is a last resort", "I don't like it but still have to live here", "my needs are not understood", "looking forward to emotional support", "practicing the way of survival", and "trying to make myself better".

Applying Compressed Sensing Volumetric Interpolated Breath-Hold Examination and Spiral Ultrashort Echo Time Sequences for Lung Nodule Detection in MRI.

This prospective study aimed to investigate the ability of spiral ultrashort echo time (UTE) and compressed sensing volumetric interpolated breath-hold examination (CS-VIBE) sequences in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compared to conventional VIBE and chest computed tomography (CT) in terms of image quality and small nodule detection. Patients with small lung nodules scheduled for video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for lung wedge resection were prospectively enrolled. Each patient underwent non-contrast chest CT and non-contrast MRI on the same day prior to thoracic surgery.
