Various surface modifications to increase the lifespan of cobalt-chromium (CoCr) joint prostheses are being studied to reduce the wear rate in bone joint applications. One recently proposed modification involves depositing graphene oxide functionalized with hyaluronic acid (a compound present in joints) on CoCr surfaces, which can act as a solid lubricant. This paper analyzes the biological alterations caused by wear-corrosion phenomena that occur in joints, both from the perspective of the worn surface (in vitro model) and the particles generated during the wear processes (in vivo model).

In this work, a sequential covalent immobilization of graphene oxide (GO) and hyaluronic acid (HA) is performed to obtain a biocompatible wear-resistant nanocoating on the surface of the biomedical grade cobalt-chrome (CoCr) alloy. Nanocoated CoCr surfaces were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 3 g/L HA electrolyte. Tribocorrosion tests of the nanocoated CoCr surfaces were carried out in a pin on flat tribometer.

The durability of metal-metal prostheses depends on achieving a higher degree of lubrication. The beneficial effect of hyaluronic acid (HA) on the friction and wear of both natural and artificial joints has been reported. For this purpose, graphene oxide layers have been electrochemically reduced on CoCr surfaces (CoCrErGO) and subsequently functionalized with HA (CoCrErGOHA).

In the 1980s, three ambitious international programmes on atmospheric corrosion (ISOCORRAG, ICP/UNECE and MICAT), involving the participation of a total of 38 countries on four continents, Europe, America, Asia and Oceania, were launched. Though each programme has its own particular characteristics, the similarity of the basic methodologies used makes it possible to integrate the databases obtained in each case. This paper addresses such an integration with the aim of establishing simple universal damage functions (DF) between first year carbon steel corrosion in the different atmospheres and available environmental variables, both meteorological (temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), precipitation (P), and time of wetness (TOW)) and pollution (SO₂ and NaCl).

Article Synopsis
  • Research on the atmospheric corrosion of carbon steel has historically overlooked the impacts of marine chlorides, despite their significance for coastal regions where much of the world's population resides.
  • Recent advancements in understanding marine atmospheric corrosion have led to a comprehensive review that summarizes current knowledge and identifies ongoing research needs.
  • The review discusses key topics like corrosion products, rust characteristics, and the long-term effects of marine environments on carbon steel, highlighting areas that require further exploration.

The morphology and elemental composition of cross sections of eight historic copper materials have been explored. The materials were taken from copper roofs installed in different middle and northern European environments from the 16th to the 19th century. All copper substrates contain inclusions of varying size, number and composition, reflecting different copper ores and production methods.

Vasculitis in rheumatoid arthritis (rheumatoid vasculitis, RV) has a heterogeneous clinical presentation that includes skin disorders, neuropathy, eye symptoms and systemic inflammation. Rheumatoid vasculitis is an unusual complication of longstanding, severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA). While RA affects the body's joints, vasculitis is a condition in which blood vessels become inflamed.

Autoimmune diseases occur more in women than in men, and this may be attributable to the role of estrogens. Androgens promote autoimmune diseases with a profile of type 1 cytokines, such as rheumatoid arthritis, whereas estrogens promote autoimmune diseases with a type 2 cytokine profile, like systemic lupus erythematosus. Both androgens and estrogens regulate the Th1/Th2 balance.

Objective: Impaired lung function and innate immunity have both attracted growing interest as a potentially novel risk factor for glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. We aimed to evaluate whether surfactant protein D (SP-D), a lung-derived innate immune protein, was behind these associations.

Research Design And Methods: Serum SP-D was evaluated in four different cohorts.

Putrescine (1,4-diaminobutane) was covalently linked to alginate and low-methoxyl pectin to synthesize new aminated polysaccharides. Both putrescine-pectin and -alginate conjugates, although the latter at higher concentrations, were found to be able to act as effective acyl acceptor transglutaminase substrates in vitro using both dimethylated casein and soy flour proteins as acyl donors. Monodansylcadaverine, a well known acyl acceptor transglutaminase substrate, dose-dependently counteracted the covalent binding of the aminated polysaccharides to the proteins.

A polythiolated-beta-cyclodextrin polymer was synthesized and used as a coating material for gold electrodes. The functionalized electrodes were employed for immobilizing adamantane-modified horseradish peroxidase via supramolecular associations. The enzyme-containing electrode was used as an amperometric biosensor device with 1mM hydroquinone as electrochemical mediator.

To compare two protocols of combined parenteral general anesthesia, the authors analyzed electrocardiographic changes in anesthetized rats undergoing left pneumonectomy. One group of rats was anesthetized with a combination of medetomidine and ketamine (group 1, n = 10), and the other was injected with diazepam and ketamine (group 2, n = 10). Investigators obtained two electrocardiograms from each rat, one before surgery (5 min after anesthesia) and one after surgery (60 min after anesthesia).

A new sensor design is reported for the construction of an amperometric enzyme biosensor toward H (2)O(2). It was based in the supramolecular immobilization of alternating layers of horseradish peroxidase (either modified with 1-adamantane or beta-cyclodextrin-branched carboxymethylcellulose residues) on Au electrodes coated with polythiolated beta-cyclodextrin polymer. The analytical response of the electrodes, using 1 mM hydroquinone as an electrochemical mediator, increases when the number of enzyme layers increases.

Objectives: Impaired lung function and inflammation have both attracted interest as potentially novel risk factors for glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. We hypothesized that circulating levels of surfactant protein (SP)-A, which reflects interstitial lung injury, could be associated with altered glucose tolerance and insulin resistance.

Research Design And Methods: Circulating SP-A concentration and metabolic variables (including insulin sensitivity by minimal model method, n = 89) were measured in 164 nonsmoking men.

Chitosan was chemically branched with ferrocene moieties and further used as a support for the immobilization of horseradish peroxidase on a glassy carbon electrode. The reagentless biosensor device showed a linear amperometric response toward hydrogen peroxide concentrations between 35 x 10(-6) M and 2.0 x 10(-3) M.

Objective: Visfatin is a novel adipokine that is predominantly secreted by visceral adipose tissue. Accumulation of visceral adipose tissue is also associated with iron metabolism. Despite the coincidence of visfatin expression in iron-rich tissues, no study has investigated the possible interaction of visfatin with parameters of iron metabolism.

Objective: The relationships between iron metabolism and type 2 diabetes are bidirectional: iron affects glucose metabolism and glucose metabolism impinges on several iron metabolic pathways. The mechanisms of these interactions depend on poorly known factors. We aimed to study the contribution of the serum soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR).

Chitosan-whey protein edible films with different protein concentrations were prepared in the absence or presence of microbial transglutaminase as cross-linking agent. The films prepared in the presence of the enzyme showed low solubility at a wide range of pH, a lower degree of swelling, and good biodegradability following protease treatments. The presence of transglutaminase induced also an enhancement in film mechanical resistance and a reduction in their deformability.
