Objectives: Individuals with late-life depression (LLD) may have shorter survival, but there is a lack of findings in population-based settings about health-related outcomes of LLD and its subtypes: early-onset depression (EOD) and late-onset depression (LOD). We aimed to evaluate the risk of all-cause mortality of individuals with LLD and its subtypes in an older population-based cohort. Moreover, we investigated whether inflammatory, cognitive, genetic features and multimorbidity could modify the effect of this association.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the relationship between retinal health and liver fibrosis in older adults, highlighting the need for further exploration of this connection.
  • Using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT-angiography (OCT-A) to assess retinal features, the study correlates these findings with liver fibrosis risk, measured by the fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) score.
  • Results show that thicker gangliar cell complexes in the retina are linked to lower FIB-4 scores, suggesting a relationship between retinal neurodegeneration and liver health, which opens up new research avenues regarding diagnostic tools for liver disease.

Background: This study aims to establish the key clinical features of different motoric cognitive risk (MCR) subtypes based on individual quantitative measures of cognitive impairment and to compare their predictive power on survival over an 8-year observation time. Methods: We analyzed data from a population-based study of 1138 subjects aged 65 years and older in south Italy. These individuals were targeted and allocated to subtypes of the MCR phenotype according to the slowness criterion plus one other different cognitive domain for each characterized phenotype (Subjective Cognitive Complaint [SCC]; Global Function [Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) < 24]; or a combination of both).

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) currently affects a quarter of the global population. Systemic inflammation, metabolic syndrome, and coronary artery disease, all conditions associated with NAFLD, have also been related to cognitive dysfunction in older age. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between NAFLD risk and a dementia diagnosis in a large population-based sample aged > 65 years.

The prevalence of late-life depression (LLD) depends on the study sample, measurements, and diagnostic approaches. We estimated the 30 item-Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-30) accuracy against the gold standard LLD diagnosis made with the Semi-structured Clinical Diagnostic Interview for DSM-IV-TR Axis I Disorders, focusing on the prevalence of a late-life major depressive disorder (MDD), in a population-based sample of 843 subjects aged>65 years, subdivided into three groups: normal cognition, subjective memory complaints, and mild cognitive impairment. At the optimal cut-off score (≥4), the GDS-30 showed 65.

Introduction: Preventive nutritional management of frailty, a multidimensional intermediate status in the ageing process, may reduce the risk of adverse health-related outcomes. We investigated the ability of a measure combining physical frailty with nutritional imbalance, defined as nutritional frailty, to predict all-cause mortality over a period of up to 8 years.

Methods: We analysed data on 1,943 older adults from the population-based 'Salus in Apulia Study'.

Objectives: Central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) commonly occurs in older age. However, few studies of a possible link between age-related CAPD and diet in an older population have been conducted. The objective of the present study was to investigate the relationship between eating habits and age-related CAPD in a population >65 years, using cross-sectional and retrospective data obtained in the same population-based study about 12 years ago.

Background And Purpose: In older age, physical and cognitive declines have been shown to occur simultaneously or consequent to one another, and several operational definitions have been proposed to consider the co-presence of the two declines; for example, "Motoric cognitive risk syndrome" (MCR) has been proposed as a definition for the coexistence of slow gait plus subjective cognitive complaints. Given the increasing interest in MCR and its potential role as both biomarker and therapeutic target, we aimed to estimate its prevalence in a large cohort of non-demented older subjects, and to examine the associations between physical status, global cognitive dysfunction, and impairment in various cognitive domains in MCR.

Methods: A population-based sample of 1041 older people in Southern Italy (mean age 75.

The association between late-life depression (LLD) and age-related hearing loss (ARHL) was suggested by preliminary studies, but reliance on LLD subtypes may introduce significant bias. We examined the association between ARHL and LLD according to the age of onset (early-onset depression (EOD) and late-onset depression (LOD)). We investigated the association between ARHL and LLD diagnosed according to the Semi-structured Clinical Diagnostic Interview for DSM-IV-TR in 1749 Italian community-dwelling older subjects from the population-based GreatAGE Study, Southern Italy.

Introduction: Non-verbal figural fluency is related to executive functions and specifically to the ability to create as many unique designs as possible, while minimizing their repetitions. An Italian version of figural fluency is the Modified Five-Point Test (MFPT), which is highly employed in the clinical practice of neuropsychologists. To date, reference data of Italian population are limited to a sample aged between 16 and 60 years old.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL), also called presbycusis, is a progressive disorder affecting hearing functions and among the elderly has been recognized as the third most frequent condition. Among ARHL components, the age-related central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) refers to changes in the auditory network, negatively impacting auditory perception and/or the speech communication performance. The relationship between auditory-perception and speech communication difficulties in age-related CAPD is difficult to establish, mainly because many older subjects have concomitant peripheral ARHL and age-related cognitive changes.
