Introduction And Importance: Amyand's hernia is a rare type of inguinal hernia which contains vermiform appendix in the inguinal sac, seldom complicated by acute appendicitis. It is usually repaired by open inguinal approach, but laparoscopic technique has been increasingly described in literature; nevertheless, standard of care is far from being defined. Here we report the case of Amyand's hernia complicated by acute appendicitis and simultaneous symptomatic left inguinal hernia, both repaired by laparoscopic technique.

This study was designed to determine the impact of DCI on the longitudinal neuropsychological outcome after aSAH, and importantly, it includes a baseline examination after aSAH but before DCI onset to reduce the risk of bias.
Methods: In a prospective, multicenter study (8 Swiss centers), 112 consecutive alert patients underwent serial neuropsychological assessments (Montreal Cognitive Assessment [MoCA]) before and after the DCI period (first assessment, < 72 hours after aSAH; second, 14 days after aSAH; third, 3 months after aSAH).

View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Paragangliomas (PGL) are neuroendocrine tumors arising from neural crest-derived chromaffin cells in the parasympathetic ganglia or in sympathetic ganglia located in the adrenal glands (Pheochromocytoma, PHEO), or extra-adrenal location and around 30-40% of PGL can be hereditary (MEN2, Von Hippel Lindau syndrome, von Reklingausen syndrome and Pheochromocytoma-Paraganglioma syndrome).
Methods: We retrospectively evaluate 127 patients with PHEO/PGL treated at our Institution from 1992 to 2018 and report our experience, focusing on different surgical treatment based on hereditary syndrome. Genetic analysis was performed in patients with features suspected for hereditary syndrome to search genetic mutations of RET, VHL, SDHD and SDHB.
Delayed cerebral vasospasm (DCVS), early brain injury (EBI), and delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) are devastating complications after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Interleukin (IL)-6 seems to be an important interleukin in the inflammatory response after SAH, and many studies describe a strong correlation between IL-6 and worse outcome. The aim of this study was to systematically review preclinical and clinical studies that evaluated systemic and cerebral IL-6 levels after SAH and their relation to DCVS, neuronal cell death, and DCI.

Cu-Zn disorder is known to deeply affect kesterite (Cu2ZnSnS4, CZTS) due to the low temperature order-disorder phase transition, leading to a random occupation of the two cations in the shared crystallographic planes. This defect complex has been extensively studied in the thin film photovoltaic sector, with considerable efforts in developing methods to quantify disorder. Herein, we report silicon carbide quantum dot sensitization of trivalent chromium-doped zinc gallate nanoparticles with enhanced near-infrared emission upon X-ray and UV-vis light excitation. We have found that a ZnGaO shell is formed around the SiC nanoparticles during seeded hydrothermal growth, and SiC increases the emission efficiency up to 1 order of magnitude due to band alignment that channels the excited electrons to the chromium ion.
