Background: Colour vision defect (CVD) is a public health issue with approximately one in ten males exhibiting some form of colour deficiency. Colour is used extensively in education so CVD has a dramatic impact on the learning, educational and social potentials of children. Racial differences have been reported with higher values noted amongst people of European ancestry.

Genomics data are currently being produced at unprecedented rates, resulting in increased knowledge discovery and submission to public data repositories. Despite these advances, genomic information on African-ancestry populations remains significantly low compared with European- and Asian-ancestry populations. This information is typically segmented across several different biomedical data repositories, which often lack sufficient fine-grained structure and annotation to account for the diversity of African populations, leading to many challenges related to the retrieval, representation and findability of such information.

Article Synopsis
  • Emerging drug-resistant strains of malarial parasites pose significant challenges for malaria treatment, highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of resistance mechanisms linked to allostery in drug design.
  • The study focuses on the falcipain 2 (FP-2) enzyme and its mutations, particularly those associated with artemisinin (ART) resistance, using a combination of newly developed and existing computational tools.
  • Key findings include the identification of dynamic differences in six protein pockets due to mutations, the observation of allosteric effects in mutant proteins, and the establishment of an allosteric communication path that aids in understanding mutation impacts on drug resistance.

Following the publication of the first human genome, OMICs research, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metagenomics, has been on the rise. OMICs studies revealed the complex genetic diversity among human populations and challenged our understandings of genotype-phenotype correlations. Africa, being the cradle of the first modern humans, is distinguished by a large genetic diversity within its populations and rich ethnolinguistic history.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of glaucoma on the mental health of primary open-angle glaucoma patients using Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS).

Materials And Methods: This was a hospital-based comparative study in which 180 glaucoma patients and controls 18 years and above who met the inclusion criteria were selected consecutively in the Eye Clinic of Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, Imo State, in 2017. Data were collected using a questionnaire and the HADS protocol.
