Severe oral mucositis induced by cancer chemotherapy can cause intolerable pain and increase the risk of systemic infections, necessitating dose reduction and discontinuation of antineoplastic agents. Moreover, this adverse effect may have an impact on patient nutrition and quality of life. An effective and prophylactic intervention should be useful for alleviating this complication.

The prevalence of depression has been reported to be higher in cancer patients, especially those of advanced stage, compared to normal controls. However, depression is often under-recognized in clinical oncology settings.
