Article Synopsis
  • Repetitive stress from pain can trigger anticipatory cardiovascular changes in response to expected pain, and this study investigates how nitrous oxide/oxygen inhalation affects these responses.
  • Researchers measured blood pressure, heart rate, and arterial stiffness in young adults before and after a cold pressor test while using either nitrous oxide or a placebo.
  • Findings suggest that while 40% nitrous oxide reduces vascular stiffness and heart rate responses during pain anticipation, the body still shows a feedforward increase in heart rate with repeated pain experiences.

Article Synopsis
  • Periodontal diseases, such as gingivitis, are common in individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) and are harder to treat due to difficulties in patient cooperation.
  • A study comparing 16 individuals with ID to 14 healthy controls found significant differences in oral health metrics, such as higher plaque and gingival index scores in the ID group, though the number of decayed, missing, and filled teeth was similar.
  • The oral bacterial diversity in those with ID was lower, with higher levels of certain bacteria (Tannerella spp. and Treponema spp.) and lower levels of Porphyromonas spp. compared to healthy controls, highlighting important microbial differences.

Background: Joubert syndrome (JS) is a rare autosomal recessive inherited ciliopathy caused by gene mutation. Manifestations can include intermittent dyspnea, apnea, ataxia, and other nervous system abnormalities.

Case Presentation: The patient was a 21-year-old female with JS, severe intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, and epilepsy.

Objective: Studies on the oral health of individuals with intellectual disability (ID) have identified problems that include a high prevalence of periodontal disease. The use of probiotics to treat periodontal disease has been the focus of considerable research, and bovine milk fermented with Lactobacillus rhamnosus L8020 (L8020 yogurt) has been shown to reduce the oral prevalence of four periodontal pathogens. The aim of this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was to compare the effects of L8020 yogurt (test group) with those of placebo yogurt (placebo group) on the papillary-marginal-attached (PMA) index, gingival index (GI), and probing depth (PD) in 23 individuals with ID.
