Background/aim: To assess surgical outcomes of patients undergoing D3 lymph node dissection and complete mesocolic excision for the treatment of right-sided colon cancer in the context that both procedures were performed laparoscopically.

Methods: 244 consecutive patients with clinically staged III right-sided colon cancer were recruited to undergo the laparoscopic D3 lymph node dissection with complete mesocolic excision. Postoperatively, the patients were stratified as N0, N1, N2, and N3 groups according to the level of lymph node metastasis, prospectively followed up for more than 5 years, and compared.

Background: By traditional open surgery, the tumor recurrence rate of total mesorectal excision with sphincter-preserving procedure was lower than that of abdominoperineal resection (APR) for the treatment of low rectal cancer. The present study aimed to rescrutinize whether the same conclusion can be drawn when both surgical procedures are performed laparoscopically.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the prospectively recorded clinicopathologic data of 344 consecutive patients with low rectal cancer, in which 170 patients underwent preoperative chemoradiotherapy followed by laparoscopic total mesorectal excision (TME), whereas 174 patients underwent laparoscopic TME directly without chemoradiotherapy.

Introduction: Previous exploratory analysis of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutational status in tumor samples from randomized clinical studies suggested that patients with activating mutation of the EGFR had better survival than those harboring wild-type EGFR.

Methods: We analyzed the EGFR sequence of tumor samples from advanced stage non-small cell lung cancer patients previously participated in treatment clinical trials. Responses to chemotherapy and survival of EGFR mutation-positive or -negative patients were compared.

Objective: Ischemic colitis (IC) spans a broad spectrum from self-limiting illness to intestinal gangrene and mortality. Prognostic factors specifically for nonpostoperative IC were not fully characterized. We aim to focus on nonpostoperative IC in patients with renal dysfunction and try to identify prognostic factors for adverse outcomes.

Background: Laparoscopic D3 lymphadenectomy is a challenging surgical procedure and has not been reported before. The present study aimed to test the technical feasibility of this procedure.

Methods: Fifty-four consecutive male patients with clinically staged III rectosigmoid cancer were recruited to undergo laparoscopic D3 lymph node dissection.

Background: Many Japanese surgeons routinely perform extended D3 lymph node dissection for the treatment of advanced rectosigmoid cancer with a view to achieving better tumor control. However, the application of a laparoscopic approach to perform D3 lymphadenectomy has been challenging. This phase 2 prospective study aimed to explore the oncologic results of this surgical approach.

Background: Periampullary cancers, the incidence of which increases gradually with industrialization, still pose a significant challenge to clinicians and researchers. Specifically, the role of cell-cycle proteins and tumor suppressor genes in these cancers is not yet clear. Recent studies have revealed that genes and proteins related to cell cycle and apoptosis regulation may be involved in pancreatic carcinogenesis.

Despite the continuous progress in molecular methodology, the genetic events involved in the carcinogenesis of pancreatic head ductal carcinomas (PHDCs) and ampulla of Vater cancer (AVC) remain largely unknown. Their proximity within the confined region lends them to very similar clinical presentations and operative approaches. However, it is unclear why AVC has a significantly better outcome than PHDCs.
