Article Synopsis
  • Cigarette smoking is a major cause of death globally and has been shown to increase the infectivity of Streptococcus pneumoniae, a harmful bacteria that often affects the respiratory system.
  • This study utilized cigarette smoke extract (CSE) to examine how it impacts the innate immune response, specifically in mouse macrophage models.
  • Findings revealed that CSE exposure reduces the production of key immune signaling molecules and disrupts macrophage functions, ultimately weakening the body's defense against pneumococcal infections.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study examines how the COVID-19 pandemic affected various respiratory pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2, RSV, and influenza, using data collected from 2020 to 2023.
  • - Findings revealed higher infection rates in pediatric cases compared to adults, with a notable increase in mixed viral detections and a resurgence of RSV after mid-2022.
  • - The research highlights the need for updated vaccine strategies, leveraging multiplex PCR testing to adapt to the changing dynamics of respiratory infections across different age groups.

Background: Cytolethal distending toxin (CDT) belongs to the genotoxin family and is closely related to Campylobacter jejuni-associated gastroenteritis. We recently reported that CDT triggers the danger-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) signaling to exert deleterious effects on host cells. However, how CDT traffics in cells and the mechanism of CDT intoxication remain to be elucidated.

Augmentation mammoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries, but there is a high reoperation rate (29.7%) commonly due to capsular contracture, implant malpositioning, infection, and unsatisfactory size. Although infection only accounts for 2% of cases, its management is very challenging, especially with nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infection.

is an emerging spore-forming anaerobe that is often observed in -associated inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) exacerbations. Unlike , neither produces toxins nor possesses toxin-encoding genetic loci, but is commonly found in both intestinal and extra-intestinal infections. Membrane lipid rafts are composed of dynamic assemblies of cholesterol and sphingolipids, allowing bacteria to gain access to cells.

Background: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a form of cancer that is characterized by infiltration of the bone marrow, blood, and other tissues by proliferative, clonal, abnormally differentiated, and occasionally poorly differentiated cells of the hematopoietic system. Patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) receiving azacitidine (AZA) alone or in combination with venetoclax (VEN-AZA) are at increased risk for invasive fungal infections (IFIs). We compared the incidence and risk of IFI during these treatment regimens in a single Taiwan hospital.

Background: Despite patients with severe coronavirus disease (COVID-19) receiving standard triple therapy, including steroids, antiviral agents, and anticytokine therapy, health condition of certain patients continue to deteriorate. In Taiwan, the COVID-19 mortality has been high since the emergence of previous variants of this disease (such as alpha, beta, or delta). We aimed to evaluate whether adjunctive infusion of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) (hUC-MSCs) on top of dexamethasone, remdesivir, and tocilizumab improves pulmonary oxygenation and suppresses inflammatory cytokines in patients with severe COVID-19.

The characteristics, risk factors, microbial distributions and effective treatment regimens for Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) patients intractable to empirical therapy were analyzed. Adult CSOM patients of China Medical University Hospital from 2018 to 2020 were included. Subjects of refractory and non-refractory groups were investigated for characteristics of age, sex, nation, comorbidities, otomycosis, and associated complications.

Purpose: Anti-granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor autoantibodies (anti-GM-CSF Abs) are a predisposing factor for pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) and Cryptococcus gattii cryptococcosis. This study aimed to investigate clinical manifestations in anti-GM-CSF Ab-positive patients with C. gattii cryptococcosis and analyze the properties of anti-GM-CSF Abs derived from these patients and patients with PAP.

infection is associated with several gastrointestinal diseases, including gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma. Two major cytotoxins, vacuolating cytotoxin A (VacA) and cytotoxin-associated gene A (CagA), interact closely with lipid rafts, contributing to -associated disease progression. The cytolethal distending toxin consists of three subunits: CdtA, CdtB, and CdtC.

Background: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is rapidly transmitted from person to person, causing global pandemic since December 2019. Instantly detecting COVID-19 is crucial for epidemic prevention. In this study, olfactory dysfunction is a significant symptom in mild to moderate COVID-19 patients but relatively rare in other respiratory viral infections.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CO-V-2), was first reported in Wuhan, Hubei province, China has now rapidly spread over 50 countries. For the prevention and control of infection, Taiwan Centers for Disease Control initiated testing of SARS-CoV-2 on January 24th 2020 for persons suspected with this disease. Until February 28th, 43 flu-like symptomatic patients were screened in China Medical University Hospital.

The increasing emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria has been recognized as a public health threat worldwide. Hospitalized patients and outpatients are commonly infected by non-fermenting Gram-negative bacilli (NFGNB), particularly the - complex (ACB) and . Antimicrobial agents are critical for treating the nosocomial infections caused by NFGNB.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious opportunistic infection in liver transplant (LT) recipients with a high rate of morbidity and mortality. This study aims to clarify the frequency and risk factors for tuberculosis in LT recipients.

Methods: A total of 884 LT recipients were investigated retrospectively at China Medical University Hospital, Taichung, Taiwan.

Background: In comparison to static spacers, articulating spacers have been shown to result in a similar infection eradication rate in two-stage revision of periprosthetic knee infections. However, the optimal construct for articulating spacers has not been identified yet. The aim of this study was to present a preliminary result of treatment for periprosthetic knee infection using a novel computer-aided design (CAD)-articulating spacer.

Adult patients with disseminated nontuberculous mycobacterial (dNTM) infections usually have severe immune system defects. Recently, several studies have shown that anti-IFN-γ autoantibodies may play an important role in the pathogenicity of dNTM infections. A considerable proportion of reported cases of anti-IFN-γ autoantibodies show either clinical or laboratory evidence of autoimmune disease.

Background And Purpose: Some studies have reported that the risk factors for neurosyphilis in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and syphilis co-infection, include CD4 cell counts ≤350cells/μL and rapid plasma reagin (RPR) titer ≥1:32. However, neurosyphils can develop even in patients with CD4 cell counts >350cells/μL or RPR titer <1:32. In this study, we evaluated the outcome of syphilis to treatment in HIV-infected patients, and analysed the predictors of neurosyphilis in this population.
