Background: Postoperative survival of esophageal cancer patients has improved with advances in technology and treatment modalities. However, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) often affects the esophagus together with the head and neck regions, with second primary head and neck cancer (SPHNC) adversely influencing the patients' quality of life. Therefore, patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) should be carefully followed up postoperatively.

This study evaluates the periesophagectomy and oncological outcomes of such patients. Patients diagnosed with ESCC between January 2010 and August 2023 and who had undergone esophagectomy with cervical anastomosis were retrospectively reviewed.

The role of extensive lymph node dissection in the new grading system for lung adenocarcinoma.

Materials And Methods: We analyzed 1258 lung adenocarcinoma patients who underwent curative resections between 2006 and 2017. We analyzed overall survival (OS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), and recurrence-free survival (RFS) across tumor grades and lymphadenectomy extent, categorized as IASLC-R0 (complete resection) or R(un) (uncertain resection).

This study investigates partnership changes and childbearing among immigrants and their descendants in the UK, France, and Germany. Our analysis of longitudinal data shows, first, significant diversity in family trajectories among immigrants and their descendants in Europe. Immigrants from other European countries and their descendants tend to cohabit prior to marriage, and their fertility in unions is often similar to that of the native population.

The link between intimate partner violence and spousal resource inequality in lower- and middle-income countries.

Objective: There is an increasing need to understand how differential levels of resource inequality between spouses are associated with women's experience of intimate partner violence (IPV) in lower- and middle-income countries across four regions. This study aims to focus on four areas of relative power and resources between couples in a partnership: employment, job skills, earnings, and household making-decision across four lower- and middle-income regions.

Method: Data on 150,623 women was drawn from the most recent, harmonized Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) for 24 countries in West-Central Africa (WCA), East-Southern Africa (ESA), Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and South Asia (SA).

To improve our understanding of enza resistance, herein we analyze the transcriptomes of matched biopsies from men with metastatic CRPC obtained prior to treatment and at progression (n = 21).

This application allows structure scientists to find trends rapidly in sets of related data such as from in situ and operando diffraction experiments. The clinical outcomes were defined as all-cause mortality, atherosclerotic CVEs, and incident heart failure (HF) during an average of 8 years of follow-up after the scan.

Prognostic histologic subtyping of dominant tumor in resected synchronous multiple adenocarcinomas of lung.

The prognostic role of histological patterns of dominant tumor (DT) and second dominant tumor (sDT) in synchronous multiple adenocarcinoma (SMADC) of lung remains unclear. SMADC patients diagnosed between 2003 and 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. DT and sDT were defined as two maximum diameters of consolidation among multiple tumors.

GREB1: An evolutionarily conserved protein with a glycosyltransferase domain links ERα glycosylation and stability to cancer.

What covalent modifications control the temporal ubiquitination of ERα and hence the duration of its transcriptional activity remain poorly understood. We show that GREB1, an ERα-inducible enzyme, catalyzes O-GlcNAcylation of ERα at residues T553/S554, which stabilizes ERα protein by inhibiting association with the ubiquitin ligase ZNF598. Loss of GREB1-mediated glycosylation of ERα results in reduced cellular ERα levels and insensitivity to estrogen.

Published literature shows low intensity extracorporeal shock wave therapy (LIESWT) and low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) therapy to improve erectile function and penile hemodynamic by inducing neovascularisation and promoting tissue regeneration. Key opinion leaders across the Asia Pacific region attended the recent biennial meeting of the Asia Pacific Society for Sexual Medicine in Australia, and presented the current evidence on LIESWT and LIPUS for erectile dysfunction (ED). The clinical findings were internally discussed, and the quality of evidence was graded based on the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine recommendations.

Brief Report: Adiponectin Levels Linked to Subclinical Myocardial Fibrosis in HIV.

Background: Persons living with HIV (PLWH) are at an increased risk of myocardial dysfunction and metabolic disturbances represent one of several potential contributing factors. Adiponectin is an adipokine that enhances insulin sensitivity with potential cardioprotective effects. We therefore investigated the relationship between myocardial fibrosis, adiponectin, and related metabolic parameters to better understand the pathophysiologic mechanisms of myocardial injury in PLWH.

This syndrome may present with a broad range of clinical symptoms from headache and visual disturbances to seizure and altered mentation. Typical imaging findings include posterior-circulation predominant vasogenic edema.

Cluster-mining: an approach for determining core structures of metallic nanoparticles from atomic pair distribution function data.

A novel approach for finding and evaluating structural models of small metallic nanoparticles is presented. Rather than fitting a single model with many degrees of freedom, libraries of clusters from multiple structural motifs are built algorithmically and individually refined against experimental pair distribution functions. Each cluster fit is highly constrained.

Using a machine learning approach to determine the space group of a structure from the atomic pair distribution function.

A method is presented for predicting the space group of a structure given a calculated or measured atomic pair distribution function (PDF) from that structure. The method utilizes machine learning models trained on more than 100 000 PDFs calculated from structures in the 45 most heavily represented space groups. In particular, a convolutional neural network (CNN) model is presented which yields a promising result in that it correctly identifies the space group among the top-6 estimates 91.

Comparison Between Performances of InO and InTiO-Based EIS Biosensors Using Post Plasma CF Treatment Applied in Glucose and Urea Sensing.

In this study, the effect of post-deposition tetrafluoromethane (CF) plasma treatment on the physical and electrical characteristics of an InTiO based electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor (EIS) sensor was investigated. Post-deposition CF plasma treatment typically improved the crystalline structure and repaired dangling bonds at the grain boundaries. We used the newly fabricated device to detect several ions, such as sodium and potassium, which are essential for many biological processes.

A set of microsatellite markers to differentiate Plasmodium falciparum progeny of four genetic crosses.

Background: Four Plasmodium falciparum genetic crosses (HB3×3D7, HB3×Dd2, 7G8×GB4, and 803×GB4) have produced sets of recombinant progeny that are widely used for malaria research, including investigations of anti-malarial drug resistance. It is critical to maintain the progeny free from cross-contamination. Microsatellite polymorphisms can be used to validate parasite identity.

Lamin A and microtubules collaborate to maintain nuclear morphology.

Lamin A (LA) is a critical structural component of the nuclear lamina. Mutations within the LA gene (LMNA) lead to several human disorders, most striking of which is Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS), a premature aging disorder. HGPS cells are best characterized by an abnormal nuclear morphology known as nuclear blebbing, which arises due to the accumulation of progerin, a dominant mutant form of LA.

Do Somatic Symptoms Predict the Severity of Depression? A Validation Study of the Korean Version of the Depression and Somatic Symptoms Scale.

This study aimed at exploring the psychometric characteristics of the Korean Version of the Depression and Somatic Symptoms Scale (DSSS) in a clinical sample, and investigating the impact of somatic symptoms on the severity of depression. Participants were 203 consecutive outpatients with current major depressive disorders (MDD) or lifetime diagnosis of MDD. The DSSS was compared with the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and the 17-items Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD).
