Background: High levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) are previously considered protective against cardiovascular diseases (CVD), but recent studies suggest an increased risk of adverse events at very high HDL-C levels in the general population. It remains to be elucidated such a relationship in diabetes, a condition with high cardiovascular risks. We examined the association of HDL-C levels with the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and mortality in type 2 diabetes.

Patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) are more susceptible to severe respiratory viral infections, but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we show that patients with T2D and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections, and influenza-infected T2D mice, exhibit defective T helper 1 (Th1) responses, which are an essential component of anti-viral immunity. This defect stems from intrinsic metabolic perturbations in CD4 T cells driven by hyperglycemia.

Background/aim: Cancer remains a major global health concern due to its high mortality rates. Advanced diagnostic imaging, such as in vivo near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging, enhances early detection by reducing autofluorescence and enabling deeper tissue penetration, addressing some limitations of conventional methods. Understanding the underlying causes of autofluorescence, even in mouse model fluorescence imaging, is crucial for accurate interpretation.

Article Synopsis
  • Gitelman syndrome (GS) is a genetic condition that leads to electrolyte imbalances, mainly due to a mutation in the SLC12A3 gene, resulting in issues like low potassium and magnesium levels.
  • A case study in an asymptomatic pregnant woman revealed she had hypokalemia, and genetic testing showed two mutations in the SLC12A3 gene, one of which is confirmed to be harmful.
  • The study also found that one of the mutations can create two different messenger RNA transcripts, potentially affecting chloride transport, showing how one mutation can influence the expression of another gene region.

Nanostructured high-/medium-entropy compounds have emerged as important catalytic materials for energy conversion technologies, but complex thermodynamic relationships involved with the element mixing enthalpy have been a considerable roadblock to the formation of stable single-phase structures. Cation exchange reactions (CERs), in particular with copper sulfide templates, have been extensively investigated for the synthesis of multicomponent heteronanoparticles with unconventional structural features. Because copper cations within the host copper sulfide templates are stoichiometrically released with incoming foreign cations in CERs to maintain the overall charge balance, the complete absence of Cu cations in the nanocrystals after initial CERs would mean that further compositional variation would not be possible by subsequent CERs.

Article Synopsis
  • - The 2022 WHO classification of pituitary neuroendocrine tumours (PitNET) refines the diagnosis by emphasizing transcription factors, building on the previous 2017 classification.
  • - A study involving 113 non-functioning NF-PitNET patients showed that the majority were SF-1 lineage tumours, with distinct differences in disease-free survival rates across subtypes identified by the new classification.
  • - The findings suggest that the 2022 WHO classification provides valuable clinical insight, as certain subtypes and tumour volume serve as independent predictors of disease recurrence or complications.

Objective: Baseline circulating thrombospondin-2 (TSP2) level was identified as a potential novel hepatic fibrosis biomarker that associates with development and progression of hepatic fibrosis in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes. Here, we investigated whether circulating TSP2 levels changed with improvement in liver stiffness (LS), which reflects liver fibrosis on transient elastography.

Design: Serum TSP2 levels were measured in participants from a randomized, open-label intervention study, at baseline and after 24-weeks treatment of either dapagliflozin 10 mg (N = 30) or sitagliptin 100 mg daily (N = 30).

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a heterogeneous metabolic disease with large variations in the relative contributions of insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction across different glucose tolerance subgroups and ethnicities. A more precise yet feasible approach to categorize risk preceding T2D onset is urgently needed. This study aimed to identify potential metabolic biomarkers that could contribute to the development of T2D and investigate whether their impact on T2D is mediated through insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction.

Zinc-air battery (ZAB) technology is considered one of the promising candidates to complement the existing lithium-ion batteries for future large-scale high-energy-storage demands. The scientific literature reveals many efforts for the ZAB chemistries, materials design, and limited accounts for cell design principles with apparently superior performances for liquid and solid-state electrolytes. However, along with the difficulty of forming robust solid-electrolyte interphases, the discrepancy in testing methods and assessment metrics severely challenges the realistic evaluation/comparison and commercialization of ZABs.
