An apolar extract of the traditional medicinal plant Neurolaena lobata inhibited the expression of the NPM/ALK chimera, which is causal for the majority of anaplastic large cell lymphomas (ALCLs). Therefore, an active principle of the extract, the furanoheliangolide sesquiterpene lactone lobatin B, was isolated and tested regarding the inhibition of ALCL expansion and tumour cell intravasation through the lymphendothelium. ALCL cell lines, HL-60 cells and PBMCs were treated with plant compounds and the ALK inhibitor TAE-684 to measure mitochondrial activity, proliferation and cell cycle progression and to correlate the results with protein- and mRNA-expression of selected gene products.

Phytocannabinoids are potential candidates for neurodegenerative disease treatment. Nonetheless, the exact mode of action of major phytocannabinoids has to be elucidated, but both, receptor and non-receptor mediated effects are discussed. Focusing on the often presumed structure-affinity-relationship, Ki values of phytocannabinoids cannabidiol (CBD), cannabidivarin (CBDV), cannabichromene (CBC), cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN), THC acid (THCA) and THC to human CB1 and CB2 receptors were detected by using competitive inhibition between radioligand [(3)H]CP-55,940 and the phytocannabinoids.

Background: Penicillium marneffei is an important human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated opportunistic pathogen in Southeast Asia. The epidemiology and the predictors of penicilliosis outcome are poorly understood.

Methods: We performed a retrospective study of culture-confirmed incident penicilliosis admissions during 1996-2009 at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam.

The aim of the current study was to evaluate viral suppression following combined treatment with an S/pre-S1/pre-S2 vaccine and lamivudine in patients with chronic hepatitis B. We established a randomized, controlled clinical trial to compare the responses of three different treatment groups: those receiving vaccine monotherapy, lamivudine monotherapy, or combination treatment. Viral response was evaluated via hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA suppression using different levels of classification.

Article Synopsis
  • The HIV epidemic is rapidly increasing in Vietnam, with a study in Ho Chi Minh City revealing a 28% in-hospital mortality rate among 100 hospitalized HIV-infected adults.
  • The most common opportunistic infections identified were oral candidiasis (54 cases), tuberculosis (37 cases), and wasting syndrome (34 cases), with other infections being less frequent.
  • Regional differences in HIV-related diagnostics and treatments are crucial, as routine mycobacterial blood cultures are not more effective than other diagnostic methods, and while certain prophylactic measures may have limited benefits, further investigation into antifungal prophylaxis may be needed.

The messenger RNA coding for the egg white proteins ovalbumin, ovomucoid, and lysozyme were isolated by immunoadsorption of polysomes synthesizing these proteins. Monospecific antibodies against ovalbumin, ovomucoid, and lysozyme, raised in rabbits, were reacted with chicken oviduct polysomes. The antibody-polysome complexes were isolated by immunoadsorption onto sheep anti-rabbit antibodies coupled to an insoluble matrix.
