Unlabelled: This paper analyses, for the first time, potential convergence patterns of hotel revenues across provinces in China. Through the club clustering methodology, the analysis uses a unique dataset of all hotels across all Chinese provinces. The findings document that these hotel revenues follow a diverging pattern on a national level, while a converging pattern is identified across certain provinces, thus forming specific clubs.

Increasing evidence has revealed the importance of cancer stem cells (CSCs) in hepatocarcinogenesis, and the idea of targeting CSCs sheds light on more effective therapeutic strategies for HCC. In this review, normal stem cells and putative CSCs in the liver are briefly introduced.

Experimental Design: BDNF was overexpressed in a mouse endothelial cell (EC) line by stable transfection, and angiogenic properties of the transfectants were assessed.
Purpose: The goals of the present study were to investigate the mechanism of hypoxia-mediated chemoresistance in liver cancer cells and tumorigenic hepatic progenitor (oval) cells and to determine whether disrupting an Akt/hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1alpha)/platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-BB autocrine loop can enhance chemotherapeutic efficacy in hypoxia.
Experimental Design: Five hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell lines and two hepatic progenitor cell lines were treated in vitro with cisplatin under both normoxic and hypoxic conditions. To generate ischemic hypoxia for tumor cells in vivo, hepatic artery ligation was applied to an orthotopic HCC model.
The present study investigated the effect of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibition on HCC cells in vitro and in vivo, either alone or in combination with cytotoxic agents. In vitro, HCC cell lines were exposed to RAD001, an mTOR inhibitor, either alone or in combination with cisplatin. Alone, RAD001 suppressed cell proliferation in all cell lines tested, but did not induce apoptosis.

However, the best strategy for prevention of chronic allograft deterioration remains unclear.
Methods: The efficacies of adeno-associated viral vector-mediated stable expression of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), cytotoxic T-lymphocyte associated antigen 4 with human immunoglobulin G(1) (CTLA4Ig) or interleukin-10 (IL-10) in the prevention of chronic allograft deterioration were compared in a rat heart transplantation model.
Background/aim: Hepatic resection is not applicable to a certain proportion of hepatocellular carcinoma patients owing to an insufficient liver function reserve. The present study was designed to investigate the effects of cardiotrophin-1 (CT-1) on improving the function of CCl(4)-induced cirrhotic liver remnant after major hepatectomy.
Methods: CT-1 was administered to rats after hepatectomy according to different protocols.
Unlabelled: Increasing evidence has revealed the importance of cancer stem cells (CSCs) in carcinogenesis. Although liver CSCs have been identified in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell lines, no data have shown the presence of these cells in human settings. The present study was designed to delineate CSCs serially from HCC cell lines, human liver cancer specimens to blood samples, using CD90 as a potential marker.

YC-1 was administered with chemo-cytotoxic drug, cisplatin, both in vitro and in vivo. YC-1 alone downregulated the expression of phosphorylated form of signal transducers and activators of transcription 3 (P-Stat3[705]), a key mediator in chemo-resistance.

However, how Id-1 interacts with these pathways and the immediate downstream effectors of the Id-1 protein are not known. In this study, using a yeast two-hybrid screening technique, we identified a novel Id-1-interacting protein, caveolin-1 (Cav-1), a cell membrane protein, and a positive regulator of cell survival and metastasis in prostate cancer.

Liver transplantation was performed by using Dark Agouti and Lewis rats as donors and recipients, respectively. The delayed immunosuppression protocol induced indefinite allograft survival.

A syngenic rat orthotopic liver transplantation model was performed using either whole or 40% liver volume of Lewis rats as grafts according to the experimental design. IL-10 was given to the 40% grafts right after reperfusion, and also at 24 and 48 hours after transplantation.

Setting: Fulminant hepatic failure is a rapidly progressive disease that lacks effective nonsurgical treatment.
The present study investigated the significance of the serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and platelets in relation to the clinicopathological features of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. Localization of the BDNF expression in human HCC tissues was performed by immunohistochemistry. The measurement of soluble BDNF in the serum was performed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

The in vivo effects of the treatments were determined in a rat orthotopic HCC model, in which hypoxia was generated by hepatic artery ligation (HAL). Compared with HAL alone, PTK787 combined with HAL significantly prolonged the animal survival, reduced the tumor size, induced more tumor tissue necrosis and apoptosis, and down-regulated the expression of von Willebrand factor.

Recently, 3-(5'-hydroxymethyl-2'-furyl)-1-benzyl indazole (YC-1) has been identified as an anti-HIF-1alpha drug in cancer therapy with unclear molecular mechanism. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effect and mechanism of YC-1 on HIF-1alpha in a hepatocellular carcinoma cell line under hypoxic condition, which was generated by incubating cells with 0.

Platelets are an important place for the storage of angiogenic factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). The present study aims to investigate the interaction between BDNF-TrkB pathway and platelet activation during tumor development. In an orthotopic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) model, increased levels of serum and plasma BDNF were detected with tumor progression.

Methods: Recombinant adeno-associated viruses carrying rat HO-1 or GFP gene were generated. 1x 10(12) vg of adeno-associated viruses were administered through portal injection at the time of the induction of liver fibrosis.
Our previous studies revealed that macrophages played an important role in linking injury, inflammatory and immune response in small-for-size liver transplantation. However, the molecular basis that promoted macrophage activation was not clear. In the present study, we explored the potential role of allograft inflammatory factor-1 (AIF-1) in mediating the survival and pro-inflammatory activity of macrophages in a macrophage cell line.
