Background: Although ionizing radiation has been proposed for the prevention of intimal hyperplasia in coronary and peripheral arteries, information is lacking on how irradiation affects arterial histology and neointimal smooth-muscle cell proliferation-the hallmark of restenosis. We chronologically investigated early histological changes and quantitative changes in arterial wall cell proliferation after arterial injury followed by external radiation for the prevention of intimal hyperplasia in rabbits.

Materials And Methods: The aorta was experimentally injured in 26 rabbits who were then assigned to two groups: irradiation with 20 Gy and a control group with no irradiation.

Unlabelled: The aim of the present study was to determine the clinical feasibility of integration of stereotactic SPECT (sSPECT) with 201Tl in the stereotactic MRI (sMRI)-based planning of brain tumor biopsy. Furthermore, the predictive value of the integrated techniques was analyzed by comparison with the corresponding histologically determined metabolic activity.

Objective: To determine clinical features, management and prognosis of cardiac conduction abnormalities (CCA) complicating abscessed endocarditis.

Methods: We have analysed clinical, microbiologic and echocardiographic datas, therapies and outcome of cardiac abscesses complicated by CCA in patient hospitalized between 1995 and 2001 in our centre.

Results: Above 35 cardiac abscesses, six men (mean age 62 years) had CCA complicating six aortic ring abscesses (4 on native valve and 2 on prosthetic valve) with four cases of interventricular septal involvement and fistulization.

The florfenicol-chloramphenicol resistance gene floR from Salmonella enterica was previously identified and postulated to belong to the major facilitator (MF) superfamily of drug exporters. Here, we confirmed a computer-predicted transmembrane topological model of FloR, using the phoA gene fusion method, and classified this protein in the DHA12 family (containing 12 transmembrane domains) of MF efflux transporters. We also showed that FloR is a transporter specific for structurally associated phenicol drugs (chloramphenicol, florfenicol, thiamphenicol) which utilizes the proton motive force to energize an active efflux mechanism.

Congenital isolated atrio-ventricular block (CAVB) is a rare pathology, and its management is still rather poorly described through international literature. Single nucleotide primer extension reaction has been widely used in DNA testing, and several detection methods based on this core allelic discrimination have been developed. Most of the reported formats are based on a two step protocol involving first, a liquid phase extension reaction, then a physical separation process (chromatography, electrophoresis, capture on solid support, mass spectrometry). Here we describe a new strategy based on homogeneous time-resolved fluorescence (HTRF), which does not involve any separation process and which allows a simple "mix and measure" protocol.

We tested the hypothesis that time course of O (2) uptake (VO (2)) measured during a supramaximal exercise performed in the field is driven to maximal oxygen uptake (VO (2max)). On an outdoor track, five middle-distance male runners first performed a test to determine VO (2max) and a supramaximal 800-m running test at least two days apart. VO (2) response was measured from the start to the end of exercise with the use of a miniaturised telemetric gas exchange system (Cosmed K4).

Chloramphenicol has been reported to act as an inducer of the multidrug resistance in Escherichia coli. A resistant variant able to grow on plates containing 64 microg/ml chloramphenicol was obtained from the Enterobacter aerogenes ATCC 13048-type strain. Chloramphenicol resistance was due to an active efflux of this antibiotic and it was associated with resistance to fluoroquinolones and tetracycline, but not to aminoglycoside or beta-lactam antibiotics.

Since the recent failure events of two particular series of zirconia femoral heads for total hip replacement prosthesis, a large decrease in the use of zirconia ceramics for orthopaedic implants has been observed. In spite of the biomedical success of this material during the last 10 years, this decrease in use was required for safety reasons, until the cause of the failures is known. It has been shown that these failures were related to the low temperature hydrothermal degradation (also known as aging).

Long-standing peripheral arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) are always accompanied by ectasia of the proximal arteries. In the literature, traumatic fistulas of the lower limbs are frequently reported to be associated with iliac and even infrarenal aortic aneurysms; however, no study dealing with associated visceral aneurysms has been published. We report a case in which a traumatic AVF was accompanied by the late development of not only an infrarenal aortic aneurysm but also both superior mesenteric and right renal artery aneurysm.
