Background: Although ionizing radiation has been proposed for the prevention of intimal hyperplasia in coronary and peripheral arteries, information is lacking on how irradiation affects arterial histology and neointimal smooth-muscle cell proliferation-the hallmark of restenosis. We chronologically investigated early histological changes and quantitative changes in arterial wall cell proliferation after arterial injury followed by external radiation for the prevention of intimal hyperplasia in rabbits.

Materials And Methods: The aorta was experimentally injured in 26 rabbits who were then assigned to two groups: irradiation with 20 Gy and a control group with no irradiation.

Background And Aims: Achalasia is a disease of unknown aetiology. An immune mechanism has been suggested on the basis of previous morphological observations. The objective of this study was to test whether the serum of achalasia patients could reproduce the phenotype and functional changes that occur with disease progression in an ex vivo human model.

Comparison of Calidria chrysotile asbestos to pure tremolite: final results of the inhalation biopersistence and histopathology examination following short-term exposure.

Calidria chrysotile asbestos, which is a serpentine mineral, has been shown to be considerably less biopersistent than the durable amphibole mineral tremolite asbestos, which persists once deposited in the lung. The initial results of this inhalation biopersistence study in rats that demonstrates this difference were reported in Bernstein et al. (2003).

Stereotactic coregistration of 201Tl SPECT and MRI applied to brain tumor biopsies.

Unlabelled: The aim of the present study was to determine the clinical feasibility of integration of stereotactic SPECT (sSPECT) with 201Tl in the stereotactic MRI (sMRI)-based planning of brain tumor biopsy. Furthermore, the predictive value of the integrated techniques was analyzed by comparison with the corresponding histologically determined metabolic activity.

Methods: Ten patients underwent combined 201Tl SPECT- and MRI-guided stereotactic biopsy of intracranial lesions according to a previously described technique.

[Severity of aortic ring abscess complicated by cardiac conduction abnormalities].

Objective: To determine clinical features, management and prognosis of cardiac conduction abnormalities (CCA) complicating abscessed endocarditis.

Methods: We have analysed clinical, microbiologic and echocardiographic datas, therapies and outcome of cardiac abscesses complicated by CCA in patient hospitalized between 1995 and 2001 in our centre.

Results: Above 35 cardiac abscesses, six men (mean age 62 years) had CCA complicating six aortic ring abscesses (4 on native valve and 2 on prosthetic valve) with four cases of interventricular septal involvement and fistulization.

Structural and functional study of the phenicol-specific efflux pump FloR belonging to the major facilitator superfamily.

The florfenicol-chloramphenicol resistance gene floR from Salmonella enterica was previously identified and postulated to belong to the major facilitator (MF) superfamily of drug exporters. Here, we confirmed a computer-predicted transmembrane topological model of FloR, using the phoA gene fusion method, and classified this protein in the DHA12 family (containing 12 transmembrane domains) of MF efflux transporters. We also showed that FloR is a transporter specific for structurally associated phenicol drugs (chloramphenicol, florfenicol, thiamphenicol) which utilizes the proton motive force to energize an active efflux mechanism.

[Outcome of 30 congenital atrio-ventricular blocks].

Congenital isolated atrio-ventricular block (CAVB) is a rare pathology, and its management is still rather poorly described through international literature. Within the service of pediatric cardiology leaded by Pr Choussat and Dr Jimenez (Cardiologic Hospital Haut-Lévêque of Bordeaux), we collected from 1980 to 2003, 30 isolated congenital CAVB, constituting the purpose of this retrospective study. Average follow-up is 14 +/- 8.

Slow crack growth behaviour of hydroxyapatite ceramics.

Among materials for medical applications, hydroxyapatite is one of the best candidates in orthopedics, since it exhibits a composition similar to the mineral part of bone. Double torsion technique was here performed to investigate slow crack growth behaviour of dense hydroxyapatite materials. Crack rate, V, versus stress intensity factor, K(I), laws were obtained for different environments and processing conditions.

A separation-free assay for the detection of mutations: combination of homogeneous time-resolved fluorescence and minisequencing.

Single nucleotide primer extension reaction has been widely used in DNA testing, and several detection methods based on this core allelic discrimination have been developed. Most of the reported formats are based on a two step protocol involving first, a liquid phase extension reaction, then a physical separation process (chromatography, electrophoresis, capture on solid support, mass spectrometry). Here we describe a new strategy based on homogeneous time-resolved fluorescence (HTRF), which does not involve any separation process and which allows a simple "mix and measure" protocol.

Oxygen uptake response to an 800-m running race.

We tested the hypothesis that time course of O (2) uptake (VO (2)) measured during a supramaximal exercise performed in the field is driven to maximal oxygen uptake (VO (2max)). On an outdoor track, five middle-distance male runners first performed a test to determine VO (2max) and a supramaximal 800-m running test at least two days apart. VO (2) response was measured from the start to the end of exercise with the use of a miniaturised telemetric gas exchange system (Cosmed K4).

Chloramphenicol and expression of multidrug efflux pump in Enterobacter aerogenes.

Chloramphenicol has been reported to act as an inducer of the multidrug resistance in Escherichia coli. A resistant variant able to grow on plates containing 64 microg/ml chloramphenicol was obtained from the Enterobacter aerogenes ATCC 13048-type strain. Chloramphenicol resistance was due to an active efflux of this antibiotic and it was associated with resistance to fluoroquinolones and tetracycline, but not to aminoglycoside or beta-lactam antibiotics.

Severe respiratory syncytial virus bronchiolitis in children: from short mechanical ventilation to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

Unlabelled: The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of children who required mechanical ventilation (MV) or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis, and to identify risk factors associated with disease severity assessed by duration of MV, mortality and need for ECMO. Ventilated children under 1 year of age admitted for bronchiolitis were retrospectively studied over the 8-year period 1996-2003. The study population included 151 children.

Dysregulated apoptosis in primary varicose veins.

Objective: Programmed cell death plays a critical role in various physiological processes. To investigate its possible pathogenic role in primary varicose veins we studied histological changes in surgical specimens from human varicose veins. In varicose and healthy veins, we also determined the number of cells in apoptosis, and investigated mediators regulating the intrinsic apoptotic mitochondrial pathway (Bax and caspase 9).

Endofibrosis of the iliac arteries: an underestimated problem.

Arterial endofibrosis is a recently discovered artery disease that is specific to endurance athletes. Cycling is the sport that has shown the greatest number of cases. The endofibrosis is located most frequently in the external iliac artery, but other locations must also be sought.

A critical comparison of methods for the determination of the aging sensitivity in biomedical grade yttria-stabilized zirconia.

Since the recent failure events of two particular series of zirconia femoral heads for total hip replacement prosthesis, a large decrease in the use of zirconia ceramics for orthopaedic implants has been observed. In spite of the biomedical success of this material during the last 10 years, this decrease in use was required for safety reasons, until the cause of the failures is known. It has been shown that these failures were related to the low temperature hydrothermal degradation (also known as aging).

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia with acute aortic and renal thrombosis in a patient treated with low-molecular-weight heparin.

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia is a rare but serious complication of heparin therapy. Most of cases are related to unfractionated heparin, but a few are due to low molecular weight heparin sometimes associated with unfractionated heparin. A patient with pulmonary contusions after chest injury developed a catheter related subclavian vein thrombosis on day 16.

Connection between a long-standing traumatic arteriovenous fistula and development of aneurysmal disease.

Long-standing peripheral arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) are always accompanied by ectasia of the proximal arteries. In the literature, traumatic fistulas of the lower limbs are frequently reported to be associated with iliac and even infrarenal aortic aneurysms; however, no study dealing with associated visceral aneurysms has been published. We report a case in which a traumatic AVF was accompanied by the late development of not only an infrarenal aortic aneurysm but also both superior mesenteric and right renal artery aneurysm.

Long-term amiodarone administration remodels expression of ion channel transcripts in the mouse heart.

Background: The basis for the unique effectiveness of long-term amiodarone treatment on cardiac arrhythmias is incompletely understood. The present study investigated the pharmacogenomic profile of amiodarone on genes encoding ion-channel subunits.

Methods And Results: Adult male mice were treated for 6 weeks with vehicle or oral amiodarone at 30, 90, or 180 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1).

Effect of micro- and macroporosity of bone substitutes on their mechanical properties and cellular response.

The control of porosity morphology and physico-chemical characteristics of calcium phosphate bone substitutes is a key-point to guaranty healing success. In this work, micro- and macroporosity of materials processed with 70% Hydroxyapatite (HAP) and 30% beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) were controlled by sintering temperature and porogen addition, respectively. Porosity was quantified by scanning electron microscopy (pore size) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (interconnection between pores).

The AcrAB-TolC pump is involved in macrolide resistance but not in telithromycin efflux in Enterobacter aerogenes and Escherichia coli.

The role of the AcrAB-TolC pump in macrolide and ketolide susceptibility in Escherichia coli and Enterobacter aerogenes was studied. Long-term protection of obese Zucker rat kidneys from fibrosis and renal failure with an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor/diuretic combination.

Some combinations of antihypertensive agents were shown to reduce proteinuria in patients with renal failure. However, preventive effects of such combinations on renal structure and function are presently unknown when treatment is administered before the onset of renal abnormalities. We thus investigated the long-term effects of an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor (perindopril)/diuretic (indapamide) combination (per/ind) in the Zucker rat, a classical model of chronic renal failure associated with obesity, hyperlipidemia, and insulin resistance.

Past, present and future of arterial endofibrosis in athletes: a point of view.

Exercise-induced arterial endofibrosis (EIAE) is now a 20-year-old concept. Initially observed in highly trained cyclists, it has been found in many other male and female endurance athletes. Most stenoses are located on the first centimetres of the external iliac artery but other localisation may be found.

Enterobacter aerogenes OmpX, a cation-selective channel mar- and osmo-regulated.

The ompX gene of Enterobacter aerogenes was cloned. Its overexpression induced a decrease in the major porin Omp36 production and consequently a beta-lactam resistance was noted. Purified outer membrane protein X (OmpX) was reconstituted into artificial membranes and formed ion channels with a conductance of 20 pS in 1 M NaCl and a cationic selectivity.
