In this article, we describe a spindle cell neoplasm harboring an EML4-ALK gene fusion presenting as an intraosseous vertebral mass with extension into the adjacent soft tissue in a 65-year-old man. Histologically, the lesion was characterized by the presence of monotonous, cytologically bland spindle cells with loose myxoedematous stroma and interspersed areas of amianthoid-like collagen fiber deposition. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated strong diffuse staining for CD34 and S100, with absent immunoreactivity for SOX10.

This study assessed the economic burden among patients with and without HF worsening after receiving CRT in real-world practice.
Methods: In this retrospective claims-based study using Optum's de-identified Clinformatics Data Mart Database (January 2007-December 2018), adults who received CRT were stratified into two cohorts based on whether they showed evidence of HF worsening within 180 days post-CRT implantation.
Parkinson disease (PD) is a neurological movement disorder resulting primarily from damage to and degeneration of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway. The pathway consists of neural populations in the substantia nigra that project to the striatum of the brain where they release dopamine. Here, we report the deficiency of miR-192-3p in the livers of mice with diabetes and its role in alleviating hepatic steatosis.
Methods: As conventional pre-microRNA (miRNA) stem-loop overexpression only boosts guiding strand ( miR-192-5p) expression, we adopted an artificial AAV(DJ)-directed, RNA Pol III promoter-driven miRNA hairpin construct for star-strand-specific overexpression in the liver.

Internet of Things (IoT) and smart environments can assist with the early detection of dementia, by nonintrusive monitoring of the daily activities of the older adults. This C-bias hypothesis in lexical processing is supported by studies with adults and infants in many languages such as English, French, Spanish, although a few studies, on Danish and Mandarin, suggest the existence of cross-linguistic variation. The present study explores whether a C-bias exists in a tone language with a complex tone system, Cantonese, by comparing the relative weight given to consonants, vowels, and also tones during word learning.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn this work we address the adequacy of two machine learning methods to tackle the problem of wind velocity estimation in the lowermost region of the atmosphere using on-board inertial drone data within an outdoor setting. We fed these data, and accompanying wind tower measurements, into a K-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm and a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network to predict future windspeeds, by exploiting the stabilization response of two hovering drones in a wind field. Of the two approaches, we found that LSTM proved to be the most capable supervised learning model during more capricious wind conditions, and made competent windspeed predictions with an average root mean square error of 0.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: To investigate presumed activated retinal astrocytes and Müller cells (ARAM) detected by scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO) and spectral domain optical coherence tomography, and to investigate its presence in healthy controls as well as its relationship to posterior vitreal detachment (PVD) and glaucoma.
Methods: This retrospective study involved 1337 eyes of 805 controls between ages 8 and 90, and 250 eyes of 146 patients with glaucoma between the ages of 28 and 95. Subjects were counted as possessing ARAM only if they met the following criteria: (1) a patchy, discrete, glittering appearance on SLO, (2) a distinct, flat, hyper-reflective layer at the internal limiting membrane on at least one B-scan crossing the glittering area and (3) absence of any surface wrinkling retinopathy.
A data sample of events from proton-proton collisions with at least two jets, and two isolated same-sign or three or more charged leptons, is studied in a search for signatures of new physics phenomena. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of at a center-of-mass energy of , collected in 2016-2018 by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The search is performed using a total of 168 signal regions defined using several kinematic variables.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFVocabulary knowledge was tested in a native (Cantonese-Chinese) and foreign (English) language in 150 twins and 150 singletons aged 6-11 years, matched on age, gender, grade level, nonverbal intelligence, parents' education, family income, and number of siblings and household members. The singletons clearly outperformed the twins on the native vocabulary, but this "twinning effect" was much less noticeable for the foreign vocabulary. The effect on English vocabulary was further reduced after exposure to English at home was controlled.
