Objective: Despite having robust radiation safety education procedures and policies in place, we discovered that the trainees at our Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved integrated vascular surgery residency and fellowship program were exceeding the annual radiation exposure limits. In the present report, we have described our quality improvement project to identify the root causes and implement policies to improve radiation safety education, oversite, and, ultimately, the exposure levels of our trainees.

Methods: A committee of faculty, fellows, radiology nurses, and radiation safety officers from each of the programs affiliated hospitals convened to identify the potential root causes of the increased radiation exposure and potential modifiable actions.

Objective: The objective of the present study was to evaluate radiation safety practices, radiation training, and radiation exposure among senior vascular residents and fellows in Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited programs across the United States.

Methods: Anonymous surveys were sent to all Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education program directors to be distributed to postgraduate year 4 to 7 vascular trainees for completion. The survey questions focused on program type (single vs multiple hospital site), familiarity with their radiation officer, formal radiation training, frequency of radiation feedback, use of safety equipment, and adherence to as low as reasonably achievable principles.

Objectives: To identify candidates undergoing elective endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) of asymptomatic infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm who are eligible for early (≤6 hours) hospital discharge or to have EVAR performed in free-standing ambulatory surgery centers.

Methods: A retrospective medical record review of all elective EVAR performed at a university medical center over 5 years was undertaken. Potential candidates for early discharge or to have EVAR performed in a free-standing ambulatory surgery setting were defined as those who used routine monitoring services only or had self-limited minor adverse events (AE) that were identified, treated, and resolved within 6 hours of surgery.

Multifunctional biocompatible materials have evoked considerable interest in the field of medical applications. Here we report the thermal decomposition preparation of homogeneous fluorescent-magnetic particles with a composite structure containing CoFe2O4 nanoparticles as nucleation seeds for fluorescent Gd2-xO3:Eux. The composite exhibited a wide range of fluorescence transitions in the whole visible spectrum, displaying 18 different emission peaks when excited at a 250 nm wavelength.

The growing popularity of physical sunscreens will lead to an increased release of ingredients from zinc oxide (ZnO) sunscreens into marine environments. Though zinc (Zn) is a necessary micronutrient in the ocean, greater than natural Zn concentrations may be released into marine environments by use of sunscreens. Sea urchin embryos have been used in toxicological studies for many decades as they are an accepted model system for investigations of chemicals that impact development. Here we describe methods for using pulse-chase experiments to study the impacts of environmental chemicals on early development as well as development of larvae. This includes the application of fluorescence plate assays with living embryos and fluorescent probes to assess cell functions (mitochondrial membrane potential, lysosome abundance, reactive oxygen species, and esterase activity) based on total cell numbers.

Objective: Pre-emptive selective embolization of inferior mesenteric artery (IMA), lumbar arteries (LAs), and perigraft sac for prevention of type II endoleak (T2EL) has not been widely adopted. We perform pre-emptive nonselective perigraft aortic sac embolization with coils (PNPASEC) in patients at high risk for development of T2EL (four or more patent LAs, patent IMA ≥3 mm, and ≥30-mm aortic flow lumen). Copper and copper oxide nanomaterials (nCuO) can enter the marine environment negatively impacting mussels, an environmental and commercially relevant organism. We analyzed the effects on the immune system of adult mussels exposed to soluble copper (CuSO , 20-50 μg/L) or nCuO (100-450 μg/L). CuSO caused significant copper accumulation in gills and cell-free hemolymph, while nCuO caused cell damage to gills and significant copper accumulation in hemocytes, the most abundant cells in the hemolymph.

The effects of exposure to either soluble copper (copper sulfate) or copper oxide nanoparticles (nano-CuO) during specific early developmental stages of sea urchin embryos were analyzed. Soluble copper caused significant malformations in embryos (skeletal malformations, delayed development or gut malformations) when present at any given stage, while cleavage stage was the most sensitive to nano-CuO exposure causing skeletal malformations and decreased total antioxidant capacity. The stage specificity was linked to higher endocytic activity during the first hours of development that leads to higher accumulation of copper in specific cells critical for development.

Assessing how endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) affect population dynamics requires tracking males and females (and sex-reversed individuals) separately. A key component in any sex-specific model is the "mating function" (the relationship between sex ratio and reproductive success) but this relationship is not known for any fish species. Using a model, we found that EDC effects on fish populations strongly depend upon the shape of the mating function.

High Throughput Screening (HTS) using in vitro assessments at the subcellular level has great promise for screening new chemicals and emerging contaminants to identify high-risk candidates, but their linkage to ecological impacts has seldom been evaluated. We tested whether a battery of subcellular HTS tests could be used to accurately predict population-level effects of engineered metal nanoparticles (ENPs) on marine phytoplankton, important primary producers that support oceanic food webs. To overcome well-known difficulties of estimating ecologically meaningful toxicity parameters, we used novel Dynamic Energy Budget and Toxicodynamic (DEBtox) modeling techniques to evaluate impacts of ENPs on population growth rates.
