This article considers an analytic strategy for measuring and modeling child and adolescent problem behaviors. The strategy embeds an item response model within a hierarchical model to define an interval scale for the outcomes, to assess dimensionality, and to study how individual and contextual factors relate to multiple dimensions of problem behaviors. To illustrate, the authors analyze data from the primary caregiver ratings of 2,177 children aged 9-15 in 79 urban neighborhoods on externalizing behavior problems using the Child Behavior Checklist 4-18 (T.

This study was undertaken to examine the receptor selectivity of Met-enkephalin-Arg6-Phe7 (MERF) employing radioreceptor binding assays in human cerebral cortex membranes, and to elucidate the responsible receptors that mediate the regulatory action of MERF on high (20 mM) K+-stimulated release of [3H]norepinephrine ([3H]-NE) in rat cortex slices. Specific binding of [3H]MERF was inhibited by DAMGO, Tyr-D-Arg-Phe-Sar(TAPS), bremazocine and ethylketocyclazocine (EKC), but not by U69,593 (U69) and DPDPE. MERF showed high affinity for specific binding sites of [3H]DAMGO.

In order to study molecular interactions that occur between rice and rice blast fungus upon infection, we isolated fungal elicitor-responsive genes from rice (Oryza sativa cv. Milyang 117) suspension-cultured cells treated with fungal elicitor prepared from the rice blast fungus (Magnaporthe grisea) employing a method that combined mRNA differential display and cDNA library screening. Data base searches with the isolated cDNA clones revealed that the OsERG1 and OsERG2 cDNAs share significant similarities with the mammalian Ca2+-dependent lipid binding (C2) domains.

We isolated and characterized a soybean gene (SGN1) encoding a basic beta-1,3-glucanase that is a plant class III isoform of beta-1,3-glucanase. The deduced amino acid sequence of the SGN1 gene is similar to that of the PR-Q'b gene, the basic class III beta-1,3-glucanase of tomato. Based on RNA blot hybridization, SGN1 gene expression was detected in all tissues of 4-day old seedlings, but it was present only in root tissue of 30-day old plants.

In plants, multiple calmodulin (CaM) isoforms exist in an organism which vary in their primary structures in as much as 32 residues out of their 148 amino acids. These CaM isoforms show differences in their expression patterns and/or target enzyme activation ability. To further understand the biological significance of CaM isoforms, we examined whether CaM isoforms act on specific regulatory targets.

Two separate nuclear binding activities (B1 and B2) in the soybean apical hypocotyl have been identified that interact with a palindromic C-box sequence (TGACGTCA) and which are developmentally regulated in an inverse manner. The bZIP factors responsible for these two binding activities, B1 and B2, were isolated from a cDNA library and designated STGA1 and STFs (STF1 and STF2), respectively. Sequence analysis shows that the STFs contain both a zinc-finger domain and a bZIP domain.

Background: Numerous publications from European and Canadian centres have documented the feasibility of performing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) without on-site surgical facilities. The absolute need for surgical standby has been changing especially with the introduction of coronary stent for bailout situations. This practice may be applicable in Australian centres especially in the environment of long waiting lists and cost containment.

Enhanced coagulation activation with reduced antithrombin III (ATIII) activity was seen in healthy neonates. Although systemic tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) and urokinase-like plasminogen activator (u-PA) levels showed no significant differences from normal adults, enhanced fibrinolysis was indicated by elevated D-dimer and low plasminogen levels in the neonates in this study. Enhanced fibrinolysis observed was countered by elevated plasminogen activator inhibitor-I (PAI-1) levels, a trend similar to that observed in the amniotic fluid during labour.

Strains of Salmonella typhi implicated in two separate cases of laboratory acquired infection from patients and the medical laboratory technologists who processed the patients' samples were analysed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Although all four isolates were of bacteriophage type E1, PFGE was able to demonstrate that the strains responsible for the two laboratory acquired cases were not genetically related. The PFGE patterns of the isolates from the MLTs were found to be identical to those of the corresponding patients after digestion with restriction enzyme AvrII.
