Pseudomonas aeruginosa secretes three major proteases: elastase B (LasB), protease IV (PIV), and elastase A (LasA), which play crucial roles in infection and pathogenesis. These proteases are activated sequentially from LasB in a proteolytic cascade, and LasB was previously thought to undergo auto-activation. However, our previous study suggested that LasB cannot auto-activate independently but requires additional quorum sensing (QS)-dependent factors for activation, as LasB remained inactive in QS-deficient P.

Background: Although true bifurcation lesions are associated with a high risk of procedural complications, the differential prognostic implications of percutaneous coronary intervention for true bifurcations according to lesion location are unclear. This study aimed to identify whether clinical outcomes of true bifurcation lesions differed between left main coronary artery (LM) and non-LM bifurcations and to determine the optimal treatment strategy for subtypes of bifurcation lesions in the current-generation drug-eluting stent era.

Methods: The ULTRA-BIFURCAT (Combined Insights From the Unified COBIS III, RAIN, and ULTRA Registries) was created by merging 3 bifurcation-dedicated registries from Korea and Italy.

Artificial intelligence-based quantitative coronary angiography (AI-QCA) was introduced to address manual QCA's limitations in reproducibility and correction process. The present study aimed to assess the performance of an updated AI-QCA solution (MPXA-2000) in lesion detection and quantification using manual QCA as the reference standard, and to demonstrate its superiority over visual estimation. This multi-center retrospective study analyzed 1,076 coronary angiography images obtained from 420 patients, comparing AI-QCA and visual estimation against manual QCA as the reference standard.

Article Synopsis
  • High-intensity statin therapy is effective in reducing mortality and cardiovascular events in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), but elderly patients often tolerate moderate-intensity statins better due to intolerance risks.
  • A study compared the incidence of statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in elderly ASCVD patients on either high-intensity statins or moderate-intensity statins combined with ezetimibe.
  • Results showed that combination therapy significantly reduced SAMS (0.7% vs 5.7%) while achieving comparable LDL-C target levels (75.4% vs 68.7%), indicating that moderate-intensity therapy with ezetim

Background: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) using drug-eluting stents is an established strategy for the treatment of significant obstructive coronary artery disease. Evidence supports that intravascular imaging-guided PCI offers advantages over conventional angiography-guided PCI, though its use is limited, likely due to high costs. Angiography-guided PCI relies on visual estimation, leading to inter- and intra-observer variability and suboptimal outcomes.

Traditionally, coronary angiography was restricted to visual estimation of contrast-filled lumen in coronary obstructive diseases. Over the previous decades, considerable development has been made in quantitatively analyzing coronary angiography, significantly improving its accuracy and reproducibility.  Notably, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning into quantitative coronary angiography (QCA) holds promise for further enhancing diagnostic accuracy and predictive capabilities.

The impact of complete revascularization (CR), achieved through the recanalization of coronary chronic total occlusions (CTOs), on long-term patient outcomes remains uncertain. To evaluate this in patients who achieved CR after CTO-PCI with those who did not due to deferred CTO-PCI, the Asan Medical Center Registry was reviewed to identify coronary artery disease (CAD) patients with CTOs treated between January 2003 and December 2018. Patients were included with single-vessel disease with CTO and with multivessel disease who had undergone revascularization for non-CTO lesions.

LiNiCoAlO (NCA95) is charged up to 4.6 V to study its structural stability at a highly delithiated state using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The TEM analysis shows that the localized depletion of Li ions near the surface triggers the transition from the H3 phase to the H4 phase with the H4 phase with the O1 stacking appearing as a series of stacking faults even at 4.

We propose a hydrogel immobilized with manganese porphyrin (MnP), a biomimetic superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) to modulate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and hypoxia that impede the repair of large bone defects. Our hydrogel synthesis involved thiolated chitosan and polyethylene glycol-maleimide conjugated with MnPs (MnP-PEG-MAL), which enabled gelation via a click reaction. Through optimization, a hydrogel with mechanical properties and catalytic effects favorable for bone repair was selected.
