Calcium phosphate coating is an attractive surface modification strategy for magnesium alloys, since it can increase their corrosion resistance and endow them with osteogenic function simultaneously. Herein, a calcium metaphosphate (CMP) coating was fabricated on magnesium alloy by using sol-gel approach assisted with micro-arc oxidation pre-treatment. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the micro-pores and cracks in micro-arc oxidation inner layer generated during the pre-treatment process were sealed by the grainy sol-gel outer layer.

Injection of total saponins from Panax notoginseng (ISPN) is a modern preparation derived from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and is widely applied in the treatment of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, ophthalmology, and endocrine system diseases. With the increase in the clinical application of ISPN, its adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and related safety issues have attracted much attention. In the present study, a data-independent acquisition (DIA) strategy was proposed to comprehensively characterize the saponins contained in ISPN based on the ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole-Orbitrap MS (UHPLC/Q-Orbitrap MS) platform.

ANGPTL8 is an important cytokine, which is significantly increased in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), obesity and metabolic syndrome. Many studies have shown that ANGPTL8 can be used as a bio-marker of these metabolic disorders related diseases, and the baseline ANGPTL8 level has also been found to be positively correlated with retinopathy and all-cause mortality in patients with T2DM. This may be related to the inhibition of lipoprotein lipase activity and the reduction of circulating triglyceride (TG) clearance by ANGPTL8.

Bone diseases, for example, osteoporosis, cause excessive differentiation of osteoclasts and decreased bone formation, resulting in imbalance of bone remodeling and poor osseointegration, which can be considered a relative contraindication for titanium implants. Dopamine (DA) might provide a solution to this problem by inhibiting osteoclasts and promoting osteoblasts at different concentrations. However, current commercial implants cannot load bone-active molecules, such as DA.

Comprehensive modeling of a whole cell requires an integration of vast amounts of information on various aspects of the cell and its parts. To divide and conquer this task, we introduce Bayesian metamodeling, a general approach to modeling complex systems by integrating a collection of heterogeneous input models. Each input model can in principle be based on any type of data and can describe a different aspect of the modeled system using any mathematical representation, scale, and level of granularity.

Previous studies have suggested that the hepatic steatosis index (HSI) and fatty liver index (FLI) can be used as a predictor of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The aim of our study was to determine whether non-invasive indices of hepatic steatosis (HSI and FLI) are associated with carotid atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This was a cross-sectional study conducted in the T2DM patients (n=768).

No currently available treatment is able to generate new contractile tissue or significantly improve cardiac function after myocardial infarction (MI), a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although gene transfer-enhanced endothelial progenitor cells (GTE-EPCs) show effectiveness in MI treatment in small animal models, no clinical trials using GTE-EPCs have been documented. Before the introduction of GTE-EPCs into human trials, gene-transfer-mediated augmentation of EPC function in animal models that reflect the human MI scenario should be tested.

Metabolomics is a rapid and sensitive tool for the detection of dynamic metabolic compositions in the study of systemic metabolic consequences. However, it is also susceptible to a tiny variation of pre-analytical handling procedures. To provide reproducible results, specific knowledge on metabolites perturbance along with different freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) is needed for further metabolomics studies.

There is a strong demand for methods that can efficiently reconstruct valid super-resolution intact genome 3D structures from sparse and noise single-cell Hi-C data. Here, we develop Single-Cell Chromosome Conformation Calculator (Si-C) within the Bayesian theory framework and apply this approach to reconstruct intact genome 3D structures from single-cell Hi-C data of eight G1-phase haploid mouse ES cells. The inferred 100-kb and 10-kb structures consistently reproduce the known conserved features of chromatin organization revealed by independent imaging experiments.
