Grayscale digital light processing (DLP) printing is a simple yet effective way to realize the variation of material properties by tuning the grayscale value. However, there is a lack of available design methods for grayscale DLP 3D-printed structures due to the complexities arising from the voxel-level grayscale distribution, nonlinear material properties, and intricate structures. Inspired by the dexterous motions of natural organisms, a design and fabrication framework for grayscale DLP-printed soft robots is developed by combining a grayscale-dependent hyperelastic constitutive model and a voxel-based finite-element model.

By 3D printing lattice structure with active materials, the structures can exhibit shape and functional changes under external stimulus. However, the programmable shape changes of the 3D printed lattice structures are limited due to the complex geometries, nonlinear behaviors of the active materials, and the diverse external stimuli. In this work, we propose a design framework combining experiments, theoretical modeling, and finite element simulations for the controllable shape changes of the 3D printed horseshoe under thermal stimulus.
