Specific cellular microenvironment, multi-enzyme complex and expensive essential cofactor make the biological manufacturing of plant chloroplast natural products (PCNPs) extremely challenging. The above difficulties have hampered the biosynthesis of capsanthin and capsorubin in the past 30 years. Here, we take capsanthin and capsorubin as examples to design an innovative microbial factory to promote the heterologous synthesis of PCPNs.

Access of drugs to the central nervous system is limited by the blood-brain barrier, and this in turn affects drug efficacy/toxicity. To date, most drug discovery optimization paradigms have relied heavily on in vitro transporter assays and preclinical species pharmacokinetic evaluation to provide a qualitative assessment of human brain penetration. Because of the lack of human brain pharmacokinetic data, mechanistic models for preclinical species, combined with in vitro and in silico data, are useful for translation to human.

Given the leveling off of PM, the coordinated control of PM and O has become a critical challenge in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region. Here, we leveraged long-term observation data spanning 2013 to 2023 to reveal spatiotemporal heterogeneity, provincial spatial correlation, and driving factors influencing PM and O integrating Moran's Index and correlation analysis. Additionally, sensitivity experiments on precursor emission reduction focusing on both overall and key sources were conducted by combining WRF-CAMx models and the empirical kinetic modeling approach (EKMA), and synergistic emission reduction pathways were proposed during periods of combined pollution.

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine and metabolic disorder associated with chronic low-grade inflammation of the ovary. Sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are a class of antidiabetic drugs that can reduce the weight and hyperglycemia of type 2 diabetes patients. Dapagliflozin is a highly selective, orally active and reversible inhibitor of the human SGLT2.

Ozone (O) is an effective agent for post-harvest fruit preservation against diverse microorganisms. In this study, a cost-effective ozone micro-nano bubbles ice (O-MNBI) was prepared, characterized, and subsequently used to precool litchi. The optimal protocols for O-MNBI production were as follows: water (2 °C, pH = 7) was pumped into a micro-nano O bubble generator for 10 min aeration treatment.

Studies have demonstrated that several lncRNAs exhibit abnormal expression levels in patients suffering from osteoarthritis, and in-depth investigation of these aberrantly expressed lncRNAs may pave the way for innovative therapeutic strategies targeting OA. The aim of this study was to examine the expression of glucuronidase beta pseudogene 11 (GUSBP11) in OA patients and to elucidate its potential molecular mechanism. Reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was used to detect GUSBP11 levels on cartilage tissues and serum samples obtained from OA patients.

Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) is a recognized carcinogen for lung cancer, but its associations with digestive system cancers (DSCs) remain unclear and the common carcinogenic mechanisms are not fully understood. We conducted five nested case-control studies within the Dongfeng-Tongji cohort, including esophageal (EC, n = 58), gastric (GC, n = 103), colorectal (CRC, n = 220), hepatic (HC, n = 117), and pancreatic cancers (PC, n = 45). For each case, two sex and age ( ± 5 years) matched healthy controls were selected.

How plastics coupled with metals regulate microbial functions-diversity relationships remain unknown in plateau soil environment. Three representative catchments in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, focusing on microplastics, their plasticisers, and metals in soils, were investigated. This research explores responses of bacterial diversity and functions to the co-existence of target pollutants, and pathways by which target pollutants regulate the diversity.

Machine learning is widely used in dentistry nowadays, offering efficient solutions for diagnosing dental diseases, such as periodontitis and gingivitis. Most existing methods for diagnosing periodontal diseases follow a two-stage process. Initially, they detect and classify potential Regions of Interest (ROIs) and subsequently determine the labels of the whole images.

Arthropods play a critical role in the functioning of grassland ecosystems, and are largely affected by herbivore grazing. However, the mechanisms of grazing affecting arthropod community, especially through modulating plant traits and soil properties, are still unclear. We investigated the variation in arthropod community variables including family richness, activity-density, biomass, and body size in typical steppe grasslands subject to grazing at four intensity levels (nil, light, moderate and heavy) in central Inner Mongolia (China), and analyzed the relationships of these variations with grazing-induced changes in plant traits, plant community attributes and soil properties.

The mycotoxin tenuazonic acid (TeA) inhibits photosynthesis and is expected to be developed as a bioherbicide to control Ageratina adenophora that is one of the most serious invasive alien plants in China. New leaves sprouting from A. adenophora at low temperatures (LT) in early spring are less sensitive to TeA compared to those growing in summer.

Cells are subjected to dynamic mechanical environments which impart forces and induce cellular responses. In age-related conditions like pulmonary fibrosis, there is both an increase in tissue stiffness and an accumulation of senescent cells. While senescent cells produce a senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), the impact of physical stimuli on both cellular senescence and the SASP is not well understood.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) severity and fat, bone, and muscle indices.

Methods: This study included 102 patients with OSAHS and retrospectively reviewed their physical examination data. All patients underwent polysomnography, body composition analysis, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, computed tomography (CT) and blood test.

This study aimed to investigate the role of transforming growth factor-beta 3 (TGF-β3) secreted by adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) in suppressing melanin synthesis during the wound healing process, particularly in burn injuries, and to explore the underlying mechanisms involving the cAMP/PKA signaling pathway. ADSCs were isolated from C57BL/6 mice and characterized using flow cytometry and differentiation assays. A burn injury model was established in mice, followed by UVB irradiation to induce hyperpigmentation.

Traditional tactile sensors are single-function, and it is difficult to meet the needs of applications in complex environments. This paper describes the development and applications of flexible tactile sensors with cilia based on magnetoelectric composites made of neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) microparticles with a silver (Ag) nanoshell in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). These sensors adopt the inherent magnetism of NdFeB microparticles and the excellent conductivity of the Ag coating.

Background: Mitochondrial dysfunction has been demonstrated to be an important hallmark of sarcopenia, yet its specific mechanism remains obscure. In this study, mitochondrial-related genes were used as instrumental variables to proxy for mitochondrial dysfunction, and summary data for sarcopenia-related traits were used as outcomes to examine their genetic association.

Methods: A total of 1,136 mitochondrial-related genes from the human MitoCarta3.

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) encompass a group of conditions that impact brain development and function, exhibiting significant genetic and clinical heterogeneity. NAA15, the auxiliary subunit of the N-terminal acetyltransferase complex, has garnered attention due to its association with NDDs. However, the precise role of NAA15 in cortical development and its contribution to NDDs remain elusive.

Membrane proteins, a principal class of drug targets, play indispensable roles in various biological processes and are closely associated with essential life functions. Their study, however, is complicated by their low solubility in aqueous environments and distinctive structural characteristics, necessitating a suitable native-like environment for molecular analysis. Nanodisc technology has revolutionized this field, providing biochemists with a powerful tool to stabilize membrane proteins and significantly enhance their research possibilities.
