Purpose: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is classified into paroxysmal, persistent, long-term persistent, and permanent types. It is commonly treated by radiofrequency ablation (RFA), which is more successful than conventional anti-arrhythmic drugs, but it is still largely unknown whether these beneficial effects are equally present for all AF types. Here, we evaluated the impact that AF type has on post-RFA patient conditions and identified underlying factors affecting AF prognoses.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the relationship between obesity and coronary artery disease (CAD) by analyzing metabolic differences among obese patients with CAD, obese patients without CAD, and non-obese patients.
  • Using advanced techniques, researchers identified specific metabolic pathways and metabolites, such as elevated homocysteine levels, that distinguish CAD obese patients from the others.
  • The findings suggest that hyperhomocysteinemia could serve as a potential risk factor for obesity-related CAD, providing insights for future clinical assessments.

Malignant tumors are one of the main causes of human death. The clinical treatment of malignant tumors is usually surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and so forth. Radiotherapy, as a traditional and effective treatment method for cancer, is widely used in clinical practice, but the radiation resistance of tumor cells and the toxic side effects to normal cells are still the Achilles heel of radiotherapy.

Estrogen deficiency induces cardiac dysfunction and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women and in those who underwent bilateral oophorectomy. Previous evidence suggests that puerarin, a phytoestrogen, exerts beneficial effects on cardiac function in patients with cardiac hypertrophy. In this study, we investigated whether puerarin could prevent cardiac hypertrophy and remodeling in ovariectomized, aortic-banded rats.

Aberrant gene expression during placental development may affect fetal growth and contribute to preeclampsia. The high‑temperature requirement A (HTRA) family of proteins are serine proteases that may serve in the quality control of misfolded or mislocalized proteins. Recently, the potential involvement of HTRA1 and HTRA4 in the normal development of the placenta and in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia has been reported.

Previous evidence has suggested that puerarin may attenuate cardiac hypertrophy; however, the potential mechanisms have not been determined. Moreover, the use of puerarin is limited by severe adverse events, including intravascular hemolysis. This study used a rat model of abdominal aortic constriction (AAC)-induced cardiac hypertrophy to evaluate the potential mechanisms underlying the attenuating efficacy of puerarin on cardiac hypertrophy, as well as the metabolic mechanisms of puerarin involved.

Resveratrol has been reported to inhibit vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation and neointimal hyperplasia following arterial injury; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The present study was designed to investigate the effects of resveratrol on angiotensin II (AngII)‑induced proliferation of A7r5 cells and explore the molecular mechanisms responsible for the observed effects. Resveratrol inhibited cell proliferation and migration, and decreased the AngII‑induced protein expression of α‑smooth muscle actin (α‑SMA), proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and cyclin‑dependent kinase 4 (CDK4).

Article Synopsis
  • Naftopidil (NAF) is used for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia and preventing prostate cancer in older men, but it carries a risk of drug-drug interactions due to its high dosage.
  • The study focused on identifying which human enzymes (UGTs) are responsible for metabolizing NAF enantiomers and how NAF may inhibit these enzymes.
  • Results showed that UGT2B7 is the main enzyme for glucuronidation of both NAF enantiomers, while UGT2B4 plays a significant role in their metabolism; both enantiomers also inhibit UGT1A9.
