Article Synopsis
  • This study explores the effects of high-dose radiation on the inner ear, specifically looking at cochlear structure and immune responses in mice.
  • Findings indicate that while there was no significant loss of hair cells, the mice developed hearing loss over time due to changes in spiral ganglion neurons (SGN).
  • The research suggests radiation affects auditory function through SGN changes and reduces macrophage presence in the cochlea, highlighting the need for further study on the immune response in this context.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a persistent psychiatric condition that arises following exposure to traumatic events such as warfare, natural disasters, or other catastrophic incidents, typically characterized by heightened anxiety, depressive symptoms, and cognitive dysfunction. In this study, animals subjected to single prolonged stress (SPS) were administered evodiamine (EVO) and compared to a positive control group receiving sertraline. The animals were then assessed for alterations in anxiety, depression, and cognitive function.

Evodiamine (EVO), the main active alkaloid in Evodia rutaecarpa, was shown to exert various pharmacological activities, especially anti-tumor. Currently, it is considered a potential anti-cancer drug due to its excellent anti-tumor activity, which unfortunately has adverse reactions, such as the risk of liver and kidney injury, when Evodia rutaecarpa containing EVO is used clinically. In the present study, we aim to clarify the potential toxic target organs and toxicity mechanism of EVO, an active monomer in Evodia rutaecarpa, and to develop mitigation strategies for its toxicity mechanism.

Abnormal expression of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in serum has received considerable attention in health monitoring and disease diagnosis. However, conventional optical analysis based on a single signal must compromise background interference and limited sensitivity in trace analysis. As an alternative candidate, the ratiometric approach depends on the self-calibration of two independent signals in a single test to minimize interferences from the background for accurate identification.

Article Synopsis
  • Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a role in various biological functions, but their specific effects in antiviral immune responses are not completely clear.
  • A newly identified lncRNA, named dual function regulating influenza virus (DFRV), increases during influenza A virus (IAV) infection and is controlled by the NFκB signaling pathway.
  • DFRV has two spliced forms: one that inhibits viral replication and another that promotes it, while both also regulate inflammatory responses by activating key signaling pathways.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-induced cytokine storms constitute the primary cause of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) progression, severity, criticality, and death. Glucocorticoid and anti-cytokine therapies are frequently administered to treat COVID-19, but have limited clinical efficacy in severe and critical cases. Nevertheless, the weaknesses of these treatment modalities have prompted the development of anti-inflammatory therapy against this infection.

Accumulating evidence has shown that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in several biological processes, including immune responses. However, the role of lncRNAs in antiviral innate immune responses remains largely elusive. Here, we identify an uncharacterized human lncRNA AVAN from influenza A virus (IAV) infected patients, that is significantly upregulated following RNA virus infection.

Accumulating studies have shown that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) modulate multiple biological processes, including immune response. However, the underlying mechanisms of lncRNAs regulating host antiviral immune response are not well elucidated. In this study, we report that analysis of the existing dataset transcriptome of blood immune cells of patients with influenza A virus (IAV) infection and after recovery (GSE108807) identified a novel lncRNA, termed as IVRPIE (Inhibiting IAV Replication by Promoting IFN and ISGs Expression), was involved in antiviral innate immunity.

Primary hepatic neuroendocrine tumors (PHNETs) are extremely rare NETs originating from the liver. These tumors are associated with heterogeneous prognosis, and few treatment targets for PHNETs have been identified. Because the major genetic alterations in PHNET are still largely unknown, we performed whole-exome sequencing of 22 paired tissues from PHNET patients and identified 22 recurring mutations of somatic genes involved in the following activities: epigenetic modification (BPTF, MECP2 and WDR5), cell cycle (TP53, ATM, MED12, DIDO1 and ATAD5) and neural development (UBR4, MEN1, GLUL and GIGYF2).
