Solar-powered water splitting is a dream reaction for constructing an artificial photosynthetic system for producing solar fuels. Natural photosystem II is a prototype template for research on artificial solar energy conversion by oxidizing water into molecular oxygen and supplying four electrons for fuel production. Although a range of synthetic molecular water oxidation catalysts have been developed, the understanding of O-O bond formation in this multielectron and multiproton catalytic process is limited, and thus water oxidation is still a big challenge.

Background: Bone is the most common metastasis site of breast cancer. The prognosis of bone metastasis is better than other distant metastases, but patients with skeletal related events (SREs) have a poor quality of life, high healthcare costs and low survival rates. This study aimed to establish an effective nomogram for predicting risk of bone metastasis of breast cancer.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) along with carbon monoxide and nitric oxide is an important signaling molecule that has undergone large numbers of fundamental investigations. H2S is involved in various physiological activities associated with the regulation of homeostasis, vascular contractility, pro- and anti-inflammatory activities, as well as pro- and anti-apoptotic activities etc. However, the actions of H2S are influenced by its concentration, reaction time, and cell/disease types.

Daphnoretin is a bicoumarin compound isolated from a natural product, Wikstroemia indica, which has been used to treat many diseases. It has strong antiviral and anti-tumor activities. Taking the anti-tumor activity of daphnoretin as a starting point, the present study aimed to test the pro-apoptotic effect of daphnoretin and its underlying mechanism in HeLa cells.

Objective: To evaluate the reliability and application of GeneSearch(TM) breast lymph node assay (Genesearch), a real-time fluorescence quatitative PCR method, in intraoperative assay of metastasis in sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) from breast cancer patients.

Methods: Totally 140 SLNs from 80 patients with breast carcinoma were prospectively studied from May 2010 to August 2010. The 80 patients included 78 women and 2 men who ranged in age from 29 to 85 years, and the median age is 49 years.

Objective: To analyze the factors affecting pathologic complete response (pCR) to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in breast cancer patients.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was carried out to analyze the clinical data of 141 breast cancer patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The factors affecting pCR and the changes of tumor receptor status before and after treatment were analyzed.

Hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) has historically been considered to be a toxic gas, an environmental and occupational hazard. However, with the discovery of its presence and enzymatic production through precursors of L-cysteine and homocysteine in mammalian tissues, H(2)S has recently received much interest as a physiological signaling molecule. H(2)S is a gaseous messenger molecule that has been implicated in various physiological and pathological processes in mammals, including vascular relaxation, angiogenesis, and the function of ion channels, ischemia/reperfusion (I/R), and heart injury.

Objective: To explore the feasibility of sentinel lymph node biopsy in peri-neoadjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer patients.

Methods: A total of 252 breast cancer patients underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy and axillary lymph node dissection from January 2005 to November 2011, including 150 patients in pre-neoadjuvant chemotherapy group and 102 in post-neoadjuvant chemotherapy group. The feasibility of sentinel lymph node biopsy under different clinical states of axillary lymph node was compared.

Introduction: To screen the risk factors associated with breast cancer among Chinese women in order to evaluate the individual risk of developing breast cancer among women in China.

Material And Methods: A case-control study on 416 breast cancer patients and 1156 matched controls was conducted in 14 hospitals in 8 provinces of China in 2008. Controls were age- and region-matched to the cases.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) play a critical role in promoting cancer progression. However, it is not clear whether MSCs are located in breast cancer tissues and correlated with tumor proliferation. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of MSCs in breast cancer tissues and evaluate their interactions with cancer cells.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the prevalence of cancer-related anemia and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) among patients with gastric and colorectal cancer in northern China.
  • A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 262 inpatients, revealing high rates of anemia before and after surgery, particularly in patients with gastric cancer and right colon tumors.
  • The findings indicate that cancer-related anemia is prevalent, especially in older patients, and highlight the need for improved treatment strategies for managing anemia in this population.

Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluates how effective clinical examination, ultrasound, and mammography are in assessing the response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer in 141 patients.
  • The findings reveal high rates of misjudgment in tumor response, with clinical exams and ultrasounds frequently overestimating tumor size and nodal status.
  • The authors recommend that clinicians should rely on pathological evaluations, like needle puncture or sentinel lymph node biopsy, to better determine node status and avoid false assessments during treatment.

Objective: To investigate the differentiation of bone marrow derived Thy-1+ beta2M- cells (BDTCs) into liver cells in allyl alcohol (AA) induced liver injury micro-environment.

Methods: BDTCs of male F344 rats were isolated by two-step magnetic separation system (MACS) technique, and infused intraportally into female recipients after labeling with PKH26. Thirty recipients were divided randomly into 3 groups: (1) AA-injured liver + BDTCs infusion, (2) normal liver + BDTCs infusion and (3) AA-injured liver + NS infusion (control).

Aim: To study the mechanism of peripheral T cell tolerance induced by superantigen Staphylococus aureus enterotoxin B (SAgSEB).

Methods: Splenocytes from C57BL/6J (B6) mice were stimulated with SEB in-vitro. The proliferation of lymphocytes was determined by MTT colorimetry.
