We introduce a universal methodology for generating and manipulating altermagnetism in two-dimensional (2D) magnetic Van der Waals (MvdW) materials through twisting. We find that a key in-plane twofold rotational operation can be achieved in a twisted bilayer of any 2D MvdW material, which takes one of all five 2D Bravais lattices, thereby inducing altermagnetism. By choosing the constituent MvdW monolayer with specific symmetry, our approach can tailor altermagnetism of any type, such as d wave, g wave, and i wave.

Aim: Non-invasive diagnostics for metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) remain challenging. We aimed to identify novel key genes as non-invasive biomarkers for MAFLD, elucidate causal relationships between biomarkers and MAFLD and determine the role of immune cells as potential mediators.

Materials And Methods: Utilizing published transcriptome data of patients with biopsy-proven MAFLD, we applied linear models for microarray data, least absolute shrinkage and selector operation (LASSO) regressions and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses to identify and validate biomarkers for MAFLD.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to find out if locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) cases with a negative MRI-predicted mesorectal fascia (MRF) could skip preoperative radiation therapy (CRT) and go straight to surgery instead.
  • - It involved a randomized clinical trial with 275 patients, comparing outcomes between those who had primary surgery (intervention group) and those who received preoperative CRT followed by surgery (control group).
  • - After analyzing 3-year disease-free survival rates, results showed that the intervention group had a rate of 81.82% compared to 85.37% in the control group, leading to the trial's early termination due to more local recurrences in the intervention group.

Malaria, one of the major global public health events, is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity among children and adults in tropical and subtropical regions(mainly in sub-Saharan Africa), threatening human health. It is well known that malaria can cause various complications including anemia, blackwater fever, cerebral malaria, and kidney damage. Conventionally, cardiac involvement has not been listed as a common reason affecting morbidity and mortality of malaria, which may be related to ignored cases or insufficient diagnosis.

We present the first experimental evidence of a topological phase transition in a monoelemental quantum spin Hall insulator. Particularly, we show that low-buckled epitaxial germanene is a quantum spin Hall insulator with a large bulk gap and robust metallic edges. Applying a critical perpendicular electric field closes the topological gap and makes germanene a Dirac semimetal.

The cancer chemodynamic therapy based on the Fenton reaction has been attracting more and more attention. However, the performance of the Fenton reaction is restricted by the unsuitable physiological pH value and inadequate HO content in the tumor microenvironment (TME). In this study, we proposed a novel method of inducing lipid peroxide (LPO) of the cancer cell membrane, whose performance is not limited by the pH value and HO in the TME.

  • The bulk-boundary correspondence is a key concept in topological quantum materials, highlighting differences between the insulating bulk and gapless boundary states in materials like quantum spin Hall insulators.
  • This study employs mid-infrared absorption and pump-probe micro-spectroscopy to investigate the optical responses of BiBr, a new quantum spin Hall insulator, revealing strong boundary state absorption while bulk absorption is minimal due to an insulating gap.
  • Findings show that boundary states have a significantly longer carrier lifetime (about one nanosecond) than typical topological materials, indicating the potential for exploring optical properties in topological optoelectronics.

The effect of gas ratio on the growth of bacteria has been well demonstrated, but some adverse effects of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on seafoods have also been found. To provide a better understanding of the effects of CO and O concentrations (CO from 40% to 100% and O from 0% to 30%) in MAP on the texture and protein contents and odor characteristics of salmon during cold storage, the physiochemical, microbial, and odor indicators were compared with those without treatment (CK). Generally, MAP treatments hindered the increase of microbial counts, total volatile basic nitrogen, and TCA-soluble peptides, and decreased the water-holding capacity, hardness, springiness, and sarcoplasmic and myofibrillar protein contents.

  • - The study focused on estimating disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for breast cancer in Chinese women, highlighting the significance of local disability weights over generic ones, showing that approximately 17.3% of DALYs in 2015 were due to years lived with disability (YLDs).
  • - Using various methods including prevalence modeling and mortality rates, the research projected that DALYs for breast cancer could rise by 26.7% by 2030 under unchanged screening conditions but could drop by 1.5% with increased screening coverage as per the "Healthy China Initiative."
  • - The findings indicate that the estimated DALYs in China are lower and have a higher proportion of YLDs compared to global estimates,

Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) is an emergency ear disease that is referred to as a sensorineural hearing loss of at least 30 dB in three sequential frequencies and occurs over a period of < 72 h. Because of its etiology, pathogenesis, and prognostic factors, the current treatment methods are not ideal. Previous studies have developed prognostic models to predict hearing recovery from ISSNHL, but few studies have incorporated serum biochemical indicators into previous models.

Coherence and steerability are two essential characteristics of quantum systems. For a two-qubit state, the first-order coherence and the maximal violation of linear steering inequality are used to operationally measure the degree of coherence and steerability, respectively. Recently, a complementary relation between first-order coherence and linear steerability has been proposed.

A time-reversal invariant two-dimensional (2D) topological insulator (TI) is characterized by the gapless helical edge states propagating along the perimeter of the system. However, the small band gap in the 2D TIs discovered so far hinders their applications. Recently, we predicted that single-layer BiBr is a 2D TI with a remarkable band gap and that α-BiBr crystals can host topological edge states at the step edges.
